PB hotel design editorial

At the base of one of Tokyo's most ambitious new towers — Pelli Clarke & Partners' 53-story Residence A at Azabudai Hills, its dark bronze-and-glass curtain wall rising above the Minato skyline — Janu Tokyo claims the building's first thirteen floors with the quiet confidence of something that knows it doesn't need to shout. Opened in 2024 as the inaugural property of Aman's sister brand, the hotel delivers 122 rooms and suites ranging from 55 to 284 square metres, each finished by Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston in a palette that holds Japanese minimalism and European sensibility in careful tension. Headboards clad in dark-stained timber anchor rooms where gilded panel art evokes Edo-period byōbu screens, while striped wool throws and tufted benches carry a warmth that feels closer to a Milanese apartment than a conventional luxury tower. The restaurant doubles down on this synthesis — a full-height glazed wall floods the double-volume space with afternoon light, while a mature olive tree planted at the centre of the room introduces the kind of unhurried, Mediterranean rhythm that feels genuinely disarming in Azabudai. Upstairs, or rather throughout four dedicated floors, the wellness centre extends across more than 4,000 square metres — among the largest in any Tokyo hotel — where a pool finished in pale travertine and deep green mosaic tile reflects the borrowed cityscape through tall screened windows. Copper disc sculptures punctuate the walls. Tokyo Tower appears framed in the bedroom windows like a painting someone deliberately hung there.

Janu Tokyo Reviews

"I recently returned from a wonderful mother and son trip to Tokyo and decided to stay at Janu Tokyo. We chose Janu Tokyo specifically because of its recent opening and its reputation as a sister property to Aman Resorts. Staying in the new Azabudai Hills area was an excellent decision, as the location is surrounded by high-end shopping like Hermes, Dior, and Cartier. We especially enjoyed the hotel's convenient connection to the main shopping area, grocery market, and food hall, all of which were very easy to navigate. The accommodations were impressive. Our room was thoughtfully designed and spacious; we particularly appreciated the dedicated closet and dressing area for our luggage. The dining options were equally excellent. We found the Japanese breakfast to be outstanding, and the patisserie offered delicious coffee and desserts. We had a fantastic experience and will definitely choose to stay at Janu Tokyo again during our next trip to the city."

"While we have stayed at numerous five star hotels around the world, this is the first five star hotel we have visited in Tokyo. This hotel easily eclipsed every New York hotel and tied the very best hotel in Paris - Le Bristol. The physical accommodations are hands down the best we have ever experienced. The very large room (which are visible in photos by other reviewers) exhibits a minimalist aesthetic, yet is equipped with the latest technological advances, including a touch screen tablet with which ordering room service is incredibly fast and efficient. If you are an exercise fanatic, the Janu Wellness centre is a facility we have never seen in a hotel before. It includes a boxing ring, yoga room, golf simulator, extensive weight training area with aerobic conditioning machines and the most magnificent 25 meter indoor pool and jacuzzi. There are male and female changing areas, which have jacuzzis, steam rooms, saunas and cold plunge pools. We realize that service at any hotel is a reflection of the employees one encounters and sometimes an employee may not be having the best day. From beginning to end, our experience at the Janu could not have been any better. Every staff member with whom we interacted was incredibly humble, polite and gracious, in a way which can only be found in Japan. From checking in with Niko, who was extremely friendly and accommodating, to Yuji and Yukiko in the Wellness centre, to Wei at check out and to every other employee whose name we cannot remember, there are no hotels in the world at which we received better service. The location of Janu Tokyo is excellent. While we did not take the subway this time, areas like the Ginza are only a 10-15 minute taxi or Uber ride away. The hotel is part of a new development, which is connected to an upscale shopping mall with sixty restaurants and specialty food stores. The restaurants range from very casual to high end and all can be accessed without going outside in the event of inclement weather. We chose this hotel because some Japanese friends we were visiting live a block from this development and other friends in the US have spoken glowingly about its sister hotel, Aman Tokyo. After leaving a luxurious cruise ship at the completion of a 61 day voyage, we didn’t know what to expect. Suffice it to say that this hotel exceeded all expectations and has become the hotel we definitely intend to return to in Tokyo."

"It’s rare that I give one stars for service, but this has been an extremely unpleasant visit. The Japanese staff were wonderful. I was sat at the bar since the tables were full, and the two men manning the bar were the absolute worst waiters I have ever come across in Japan. One was Italian and the other Indian. They were extremely rude and dismissive. I was not given a menu after I sat down and I had to ask for one, once I did, he brought it with a long face. The other Indian staff frowned, rolled his eyes upon speaking with, and had zero respects for customers. The coffee was good but not worth ¥2,000 and the “service” charge. This is not a cafe I reccommend to anyone, especially before they put their attitude straight."

"We were staying at the Aman hotel and heard of their sister hotel called Janu. We had the opportunity to meet the front desk manager, Raj Singh. He was simply outstanding . He graciously gave us a tour of the hotel and allowed us to visit some rooms . Customer service like this is unmatched . We will be staying there next time we visit Tokyo ."

"We were greeted by name by the Conceirge team at arrival. With our Luggage taken care of by them, we were escorted To the 5th floor where we were met by a senior front office staff and escorted directly to our room. We were placed in a corner room on there 13th floor. We had views of large courtyard, overlooking other buildings. Our room was large. A long wide walkway into the room with cupboards flanking the wall on the right. Into the room with the bed at the end of the walkway. Then a sitting area for two with a hidden TV forming a barrier to the study area. Along the walkway coming in were cupboards with large wooden coat hangers, a safe, bathrobes, bedroom slippers, hairdryer, umbrella. There are two cupboards for his/her stuff or clean clothes/jackets. The cupboard is broken up by a low bench, ideal to work out of an open luggage here. The bedroom had a king sized bed. Bed is just the right balance of comfort vs hardness. There are available plug points for charging your devices. TV remote and a Bose speaker are placed here. Both sides of the bed have light and curtain/blinds control. Right beside the bed are sliding doors leading out to a large Balcony with some outdoor seating. Two low comfortable single seater sofa was placed next to a round table. Some snacks were placed here and also a welcome amenity of fruits. Using the remote provided to bring up the TV, one can watch local and cable TV, chrome cast your phone or connect to your Netflix account. At the other end of the room, a long table with a built in fridge and drawers for cups and tea/coffee is available. The table spans the width of the room. The non-alcoholic drinks in the fridge comes free with the room. The other end of the table has a tablet which communicates with the hotel if you have in room dining or shoe shine requests, amongst a myriad of other info and requests. The toilet is central to the above areas. There are sliding doors that open up into the entrance walkway and the living area. The toilet features double sinks, with wall lights vertically flanking the mirror. A bath tub is also situated here. One could technically watch TV while in the tub. An amenities box with all the stuff you need to make your stay comfortable, including hair band and hair ties, cotton swabs and squares. Hand wash gel and moisturizer is provided. There’s of course shampoo, conditioner and body gel in the shower. There’s option for rain shower or hand held shower head. A stool is also provided in the shower. In the next cubicle is the toilet with full-on Japanese toilet functions. Warm toilet seats, buttons to up/down the toilet seat and washes for your nether regions. We used the gym and it was superbly appointed. I have not seen such a serious gym in a hotel. It has a cage that doubles as hyrox and ninja-warrior training. Lots of free weights and weights machines, wooden clubs, kettle bells, foam rollers, weighted sacks, bands, balls. There are loads of choices for cardio - rowing, elliptical ski, treadmill, cycling. The hotel also runs free classes for guests in the morning. Check the schedule on the in-room iPad. Wife went for Yoga Flow class at 0800hrs; advisable to book early as they limit the number of participants. The swimming pool is also “to die for”, I am told. So make sure you bring your gym and swim gear! We were very impressed with the service of the staff. They were all polite, very happy to help with anything and everything. From the shoe shine team to Conceirge to housekeeping to gym staff to front office team. Kudos to all of them! An example of their willingness to to go the extra mile - at check-out, we told them that we wanted to Ta-Q-bin our luggage to our next hotel. After asking for details, they realized that our next Tokyo booking was nearby and they offered to walk our bags over instead! WOW! Mind blown! We had breakfast at the Grill on 4th floor. Food was good. You can choose set meal or alacarte. The Janu breakfast set was very enjoyable. The servers here are polite and efficient and do their best for a large area and busy meal service. The hotel is part of the new Azabudai Hills development. There is shopping and museums to enjoy. TeamLabs has an exhibit here too. Hibiya line is not far from the hotel and cabs are plentiful. We really enjoyed our stay here. It was a fantastic experience. Great hard product made better by the Janu team."
