PB hotel design editorial

Rising from the upper floors of the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower — a 39-storey mixed-use development completed in 2005 by Cesar Pelli & Associates above the ornate Meiji-era Mitsui Main Building — Mandarin Oriental Tokyo established itself as one of the most precisely situated luxury hotels in Asia, with the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Skytree framing opposite windows of the same room. The hotel fills floors 30 through 38 of the tower, its 179 rooms and suites positioned high enough above the Chuo-ku streetgrid that the city resolves into pure geometry at night. The interiors, designed by the Hong Kong-based firm Spin Design Studio, navigate the familiar tension between contemporary hospitality expectations and a coherently Japanese sensibility without defaulting to either end of that spectrum. Headboard panels embroidered with wisteria motifs in silver thread sit against walls clad in warm lacquered timber, the palette shifting between sand, amber, and deep plum depending on the room category. Dark walnut millwork anchors the restaurant spaces on the upper floors, where tall-backed cane dining chairs upholstered in botanical-print fabric and elongated Murano glass pendant lights introduce a quietly eclectic note against the uninterrupted panorama of greater Tokyo spreading to the horizon. The bar lounge, set across a double-height space with floor-to-ceiling glazing, mixes terracotta velvet seating with intricate lattice screens — grounded craft in a room where the view alone could easily become the whole point.

"We enjoyed our stay at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo very much, starting from the reception at the airport until the limousine shuttle service on departure day. The accommodation with stunning views over the skyline, the restaurants and of course the perfect service from all the staff made us feel more than welcome!"

"Japan is one of my favorite travel destinations, and I visited Tokyo two weeks ago for a holiday. This stay at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo was a wonderful experience. One of the highlights of the hotel is its excellent location. While the property feels calm and uncrowded, everything is conveniently within reach. Mitsukoshi is just a short walk away for luxury shopping, and there is a food mall directly opposite the hotel offering a wide variety of dining options. Within the hotel itself, there are several Michelin‑starred restaurants, as well as the renowned Pizza Bar on the 38th floor. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure a seat at the Pizza Bar during this visit, which only gives me a reason to return. My room had a beautiful view of Tokyo Skytree, and I was especially lucky to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji while passing through the lobby — a memorable and unexpected moment. Service throughout the stay was very good: professional, warm, and attentive. Overall, it was a highly enjoyable experience, and I am already planning to return again in December."

"It seems strange to give a Mandarin Oriental a 3 star review. Especially as a returning guest. I was there pre covid and it seems its lost its luster. Arrival to the hotel was fine and the lobby is on the 38th floor. The personnel was fine but made no mention of my return or emails I sent in. I am a Centurion card holder as well and they did not acknowledge it or offer a upgrade which was strange with every room category still available with a last minute reservation. After quite a day of travel I was looking forward to the pizza counter that seems to still be going strong. Unfortunately there was no availability for the rest of the night and the woman at the front desk was curt and quick to say they don’t serve pizza in the incorporated dining area only at the counter. I was put off and left. I went up to the room and it was the same as I remembered but in need of a update as a “crown jewel” in the Mandarin collection should be in pristine updated condition. It’s very nice but not up to today’s standards. After exploring Tokyo at night I returned to the hotel bar and wanted a bite to eat. I waited 10 minutes before the barman acknowledged I was there. I had a menu in front of me and he ignored me for 15 minutes. I got the bill and left. I had breakfast at the buffet in the morning and that was great. Plenty of fresh fruits and baked goods and a menu of quality breakfast. My flight was delayed and found myself with a few hours to kill so I went to the concierge desk to see if he had a suggestion that was in the area /walking distance. He directed me to the palace that was in the park/gardens about 20 min away. Upon arrival it was closed as it always is on Mondays and Fridays so I was upset to have wasted an hour. He was not there when I returned to let him know but ….. oh well. Overall nothing stood out at this former show stopper and I would not return when in Tokyo. I interacted with 5-6 hotel personnel and the only person who was friendly was a young girl in the valet who helped with directions and took my picture."
