PB hotel design editorial

Kenzo Tange's Shinjuku Park Tower, completed in 1994 as one of the last major works by the Pritzker laureate, steps three glass-clad shafts upward from a shared base in west Shinjuku, their crystalline peaks forming one of Tokyo's most recognizable skyline signatures. The Park Hyatt Tokyo was conceived within the upper fourteen floors of the tallest shaft, from the 39th to the 52nd, giving it an altitude and a sense of remove from the city below that very few urban hotels anywhere can match. Original interior designer John Morford established a residential atmosphere unusual for the scale — warm timbers, stone detailing, and carefully proportioned rooms that felt closer to a private apartment than a tower hotel — and that ethos survived the property's 19-month closure and December 2025 reopening under Paris-based Studio Jouin Manku. The renovated rooms show how faithfully that spirit has been carried forward: linen-upholstered headboards, dark-stained timber joinery, small-format ceramic objects on shallow shelves, and palette held to warm greys and off-whites that let the panoramic views do the dramatic work. The double-height pool, framed by a steel-trussed glazed gable facing the nighttime city, preserves the Tange-era structural confidence intact. At the Japanese restaurant on the upper floors, a double-height glazed wall faces Mount Fuji at sunset, a large-format photographic work suspended overhead — the room working in full knowledge of the view and choosing, wisely, not to compete with it.

"One of the great hotel experiences in the world, not just in Tokyo. The Park Hyatt sits on the top floors of a Shinjuku skyscraper and never lets you forget it. Every room looks out over the city, and on a clear day you get Fuji in the distance. The scale is intimate for what it is: 177 rooms, no lobby chaos, no tour groups. The staff remember your name by day two. The Peak Bar at night is one of my favorite bars in any city, and the pool on the 47th floor with floor-to-ceiling city views is genuinely one of the most beautiful spaces in Tokyo. The New York Grill is worth it for breakfast even if you're not staying. This is the hotel that understands what luxury actually means: restraint, space, and service that never announces itself."

"I first discovered Kate when she was performing at the legendary Bamboo Bar in Bangkok. Her voice was so extraordinary that when I learned she was performing at the New York Bar in the Park Hyatt Tokyo, I simply couldn’t miss the opportunity to hear her again. I was only passing through Tokyo on my way to the USA, yet I happily took a 30-minute taxi ride from Haneda Airport—and another 30 minutes back—just to spend the evening listening to her perform. That’s how exceptional she is. The setting couldn’t have been more breathtaking. Perched more than 50 floors above Tokyo, the panoramic nighttime views are absolutely stunning. Knowing this is the iconic bar made famous by Lost in Translation only adds to the magic of the experience. Kate’s voice is nothing short of extraordinary. Warm, effortless, and incredibly expressive, she has that rare ability to captivate an audience from the very first note. Combined with her engaging personality and natural stage presence, she creates an atmosphere that is both intimate and unforgettable. Kate was supported by an outstanding band whose energy and talent elevated an already spectacular performance. Together, they created an evening of live jazz that I won’t soon forget. And then there was the food. The lobster roll was, without question, the best I’ve ever eaten. It was so delicious that I immediately ordered a second one—a first for me! Between the breathtaking views over Tokyo, the incredible food, the outstanding band, and Kate’s unforgettable performance, it was one of the most memorable evenings I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. If you’re fortunate enough to be in Tokyo while Kate is performing at the New York Bar, do yourself a favor and don’t miss her. I traveled from the airport during an international layover just to hear her sing again, and I’d do it all over without a second thought."

"For the amount of money this hotel charges they give you zero in return. Awful location, awful food (worst breakfast buffet I’ve ever seen) and the rooms and hotel are dark and dreary. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE."

"My wife, daughter and I spent 2 weeks at the Park Hyatt Tokyo in late June, 2026. We absolutely loved every part of our stay and we’ll look forward to our next stay at this amazing property. Our stay was to celebrate our daughter’s graduation from High School and my wife’s and my 25th wedding anniversary. Every single person that we interacted with at the hotel provided exceptional service and went out of their way to help or guide us. As a Hyatt Globalist with high expectations for this property, I can say that all of my expectations were exceeded, by far. I’ve read some negative reviews of the hotel on this site and I disagree with all of them. Any negativity just doesn’t match our experience. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from Shinjuku Station, but it’s an easy walk with lots to see. You can even enter the underground from in front of the nearby Washington Hotel if it happens to be raining or too hot. And if you’re in a hurry or don’t want to walk it, the hotel offers a shuttle every half hour that you can reserve. Or, you can pay $5 US for a taxi (which we did a couple of times in the rain). Pro tip: If it’s your first time in Japan: Ask the hotel for their business card that’s printed in Japanese. You can show that card to every taxi driver once you get in their cab and they’ll know exactly where to take you. And every taxi we took accepted credit card or cash. We had zero issues. We mostly took trains as that’s our preferred mode of transportation in Tokyo, but it was nice to have the convenience of the taxi or shuttle when we needed it. Our room was perfect. The view was breathtaking. Everything was clean. Housekeeping was great. If you like to sleep in like I do, you just call Guest Services when you’re going to leave your room for a couple hours and your room will be ready upon your return. Restaurants: New York Grill did not disappoint. We took the staff recommendations for food and we loved everything. And that view! Girandole was great for breakfast every morning. We had both the Japanese and the American breakfasts and loved both. It’s nice that you have two options, but you need to arrive early for the Japanese breakfast as that will sell out. The Peak Lounge was great for afternoon tea or if you need a break from Japanese food and want an American style lunch. I loved the Club Sandwich there. It came with a salad and fries and it was all delicious. The New York Bar on top of the hotel serves wonderful food and drinks (and dessert) with live jazz and amazing views. All were perfect and we went as often as we could. My wife and daughter loved the gym and spa facilities and I’ll take their word for it. Thank you to the entire Park Hyatt Tokyo team for all the hard work you do every day to create wonderful guest experiences that become lifelong memories. We can’t wait to return someday!"
