PB hotel design editorial

Rising directly behind the landmarked red-brick facade of Tokyo Station — Kingo Tatsuno's 1914 Meiji-era terminus, with its copper domes and Renaissance Revival stonework — the 38-storey Marunouchi Trust Tower Main sets up one of the city's more charged architectural conversations. Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo, which took over the tower's upper floors when it opened in 2009, is positioned precisely where that tension between historical preservation and contemporary ambition becomes most visible: the glass curtain wall above reflects the station's ornate roofline back at itself, a mirror held up to a century of Japanese urban transformation. Interiors by the Hong Kong-based design consultancy HBA carry the brand's signature register — tufted velvet headboards in caramel and tobacco, cofferred ceilings with crystal chandeliers, warm walnut millwork panelling guest rooms that sit between the 28th and 37th floors. The palette across the 202 rooms and suites runs to amber, deep red accents, and ivory, grounded by marble detailing in bathrooms and custom-woven carpets. The sky-level restaurant deploys bronze-mirrored column cladding and large-format amber pendant lights above a mix of banquette seating and loose club chairs, with floor-to-ceiling glazing drawing the Marunouchi skyline into the dining room. The indoor lap pool, lined in pale travertine and aqua mosaic tile, has a sculpted wave-relief wall that offers the one moment of decorative restraint the property genuinely earns.

Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo Reviews

"I would give the Shangri-La 4.5 stars if I could. The service was elegant, as was the hotel. The minute you step into the hotel there is an air of calmness and quiet elegance. The location is great - close to shops, restaurants, and the train station. We stayed at the club level and really enjoyed speaking with the kind and helpful staff and eating some meals there. The food selection was curated but delicious. I recommend booking a club level room, it is worth the extra cost. The breakfast buffet in the restaurant was also good."

"This is an exquisite hotel. We started off with a delightful lunch in the 28th floor restaurant, then checked into a very spacious room on the 34th floor. The room had every amenity, with motorized shades and different lighting configurations as well as a sofa at the huge window overlooking Tokyo. The shower was amazing, with the most water-flow of any shower I have taken in 30 years! We did experience a problem soon after check-in when very annoying pounding sounds came from the room above ours. We called the front desk to complain and they informed us that there were two adjoining rooms above us and that a family with 4 children had checked into those rooms. The manager went to those rooms and asked the guests to stop the jumping/tumbling/pounding or whatever it was they were doing, and the nuisance ceased. They staff was very apologetic and we were very pleased with their response."

"From the moment I arrived at the Shangri-La Tokyo, I knew this stay was going to be something special—but it still managed to exceed every expectation. The location is unbeatable, directly connected to Tokyo Station, which made getting around the city effortless, and within walking distance of the Imperial Palace Gardens. Despite being in such a central hub, the hotel feels like a calm sanctuary above the energy of Tokyo. The views from the room were absolutely breathtaking—watching the city skyline, especially at night, was unforgettable. The room itself was spacious by Tokyo standards, impeccably clean, and beautifully designed with a perfect balance of modern luxury and subtle Japanese touches. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and every detail—from the amenities to the lighting—felt thoughtfully curated. What truly sets this hotel apart, though, is the service. Every staff member I encountered was warm, attentive, and genuinely dedicated to making my stay exceptional. Check-in was seamless, and the team went above and beyond with personalized touches that made me feel truly valued as a guest. The dining experience was equally impressive. Breakfast offered a fantastic selection of both Western and Japanese options, all of the highest quality. It was the perfect way to start each day. Overall, the Shangri-La Tokyo delivers a flawless blend of luxury, comfort, and world-class hospitality. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exceptional experience in Tokyo."

"I came to Shangri-La Tokyo for a solo birthday trip to enjoy Tokyo for five days. From start to finish, my stay was wonderful. The room is huge, particularly compared to Tokyo standards, and very well equipped. I was especially surprised to see the outlets could accommodate three pronged plugs. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the shower was luxurious. All amenities you could think of were provided for. Breakfast was included in my stay and was delicious. The staff at Piacere were incredibly hospitable, nothing was too large an ask. I communicated with the concierge ahead of time to handle dinner reservations and they were very communicative. The meet and greet service is so helpful; I would've been lost for ages in Tokyo Station without their staff guiding me. It was a joy to return to my room every night, and honestly quite hard to leave in the morning! I'll definitely make Shangri-La Tokyo my go-to hotel whenever I'm in town."
