PB hotel design editorial

Ian Schrager brought his particular brand of social architecture to Tokyo when the Tokyo EDITION Toranomon opened in 2020, setting it within the thirty-eight-storey Toranomon Hills tower designed by Mori Building Company in the rapidly transforming district between Kasumigaseki and the bay. The building's verticality gave Schrager and his longtime collaborator Yabu Pushelberg an unusual brief: to compress the EDITION's signature tension between intimacy and spectacle into a tower floor plate, with Tokyo Tower framed in nearly every upper-level window like a deliberate compositional device. The interiors answer that brief through discipline and contrast. Guest rooms are clad in pale ash wood panelling, platform beds set low to the floor in a register that borrows quietly from Japanese residential tradition without resorting to pastiche, the city panorama doing most of the atmospheric work through full-height glazing. The restaurant, by contrast, turns theatrical — cobalt velvet banquettes beneath a slatted timber ceiling, living ficus trees growing through the floor plane toward the light, Tokyo Tower burning orange beyond the glass. The bar takes a different temperature entirely: dark fluted oak walls, a scalloped plaster ceiling pressing down overhead, and a back-bar grid of illuminated antique perfume bottles arranged against embossed decorative panels, the whole room calibrated toward the conspiratorial quiet that Schrager has always understood as the real luxury.

The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon Reviews

"Stayed 3 nights at the Edition at Toranomon. Was really excited to try this hotel, which they advertise as being on the World's Best top 50 list. First of all, some of the good. Although I read some poor reviews on the service, I thought the service was excellent and that was definitely not one of the shortcomings in my case. Everyone was attentive and friendly and we were well taken care of throughout the stay. Any issues with service must have been addressed by now or some people may have had some one off bad experiences. Also, the location was excellent. Right next to the Kamiacho subway station, it was really easy to take the subway to most of the popular spots. The bad. The rooms were OK sized for Japanese standards but not large by western standards. Also, I understand the minimalist design but the rooms were not practical. No dresser to put your cloths in and only one small closet with some hangers so we basically lived in suitcases on the ground. We had come from skiing so had about 6 bags on the ground, which made the room messy and took away from any minimalist design. Also, the bathroom tub and shower was a plastic pre-formed design that reminds me of bathrooms in cheap Japanese motels. Definitely not what I was expecting from a 5 star. Also, the hotel is located on the top floors of an office building so the amenities are sparse. The gym was small and crowded when i was there so only stayed about 15 minutes. Taxi drivers did not know where the hotel was because it is not apparent from the street and the entrance is via a basement. So, the hotel was by no means bad but for a $1,000+ per night hotel for a standard room, I really think I could do better next time. It was good but probably not great enough for me to come back next year."

"From the moment I arrived at The Tokyo EDITION, the experience felt exceptional. I’ve stayed at many five-star hotels around the world, but this property truly stands out for its service, atmosphere, and attention to detail. Check‑in was effortless and genuinely welcoming, every interaction felt sincere rather than scripted. Throughout my stay, every team member seemed to remember my name, which added such a personal touch. The service here reflects a level of refined Japanese hospitality that feels elegant yet warm, and without question, this is the best EDITION hotel I’ve experienced to date. Breakfast was outstanding with a thoughtful selection of dishes prepared to perfection, and the Italian member of the dining team went above and beyond each morning, always attentive, friendly, and professional. The pool and public spaces are beautifully designed, and the views of Tokyo Tower are absolutely spectacular, especially in the evening. The location couldn’t be better for both exploring the city and enjoying a quieter, more sophisticated side of Tokyo. This stay has set a new standard for me, and I’m already looking forward to returning. A true must‑stay in Tokyo."

"My partner and I spend a special evening together at the Edition in December. The staff made us feel right at home, with some pre-arranged goodies to greet us in the room. We had a great time at the pool there, and a truly excellent meal at the Blue Room. Sylvia Chu, one of its assistant reservation managers there, took extra special care of us and made our stay unforgettable. Special thanks to her and the team for a wonderful stay!"
