PB hotel design editorial

Tatsuno Kingo designed the red-brick Marunouchi station building in 1914, drawing on Dutch Renaissance forms he had absorbed during his studies in Europe — and for a century, that facade anchored the western edge of the Imperial Palace district as one of Tokyo's most recognizable civic monuments. When Allied bombing damaged the building's iconic domed roof ends in 1945, the reconstruction removed the original octagonal cupolas entirely, leaving the structure diminished for nearly seventy years until a painstaking restoration completed in 2012 finally returned them. The Tokyo Station Hotel, fitted into the upper floors of the station's south wing, reopened as part of that same project, its 150 rooms distributed across the historic brick envelope that generations of Tokyoites had watched from the Marunouchi plaza below. The interiors calibrate their Edwardian references carefully — rooms dressed in deep tufted headboards, panelled walls finished in cream and ivory, patterned wool carpets in blue-grey medallion geometries, and crystal chandeliers that lean toward the building's origins without imitating them slavishly. The dining room set within one of the building's curved dome volumes shows how skillfully the architecture was worked into the hotel programme: a circular arrangement of white-clothed tables beneath a drum of limestone cladding and a vast pendant light fixture fitted to the original curve of the ceiling. Downstairs, the Station Bar shifts register entirely — dark walnut panelling, a backlit spirit shelf behind a long lacquered counter, and raspberry-striped velvet banquettes that give the room the atmosphere of a classic European railway hotel, transplanted and made Tokyo's own.

"By far the best hotel I’ve stayed at. I’ve traveled the world and stayed at all types of hotels. I’ve never seen such impeccable room cleaning ! The room is also incredibly comfortable with everything you need : air purifier, coat spray, daily slippers , sound proof windows etc the room attendant took 1 hour to clean the room and it was impressive. My second stay at the Tokyo station and would never stay anywhere else . It’s a treat and so worth it. Highly recommend!"

"The most exquisite hotel stay we've ever had. This hotel was perfection from entry to departure. We felt like celebrities. We booked last minute as we had an early train to Kyoto the next morning (this hotel is right next to Tokyo station so its super convenient). All that was left was a room with two twin beds...but again - the best stay ever. The beds were incredibly comfy, the room spotless, the bathroom amenities were amazing. We also were given a credit to their bar where we had the best time watching an expert bartender in action. The breakfast was simply phenomenal - so many options and unique bites to try, incredible display and service. The service was extraordinary. Loved it and would love to go back and stay longer."

"This is a review for our stay in May 2025. We were super excited to start our two week trip at this hotel. Our stay in wasn’t bad but we were underwhelmed. Not sure if it’s because we booked through a third party website but we were given one of their duplex rooms very far from the elevator. The room was nice but ideally I would have preferred not to walk up a pretty full set of stairs every time I wanted to lay down or grab something from the sage or bathroom What really disappointed us was the service. To caveat, I completely understand that it could be a reflection of Japanese culture but no one was overly friendly or helpful throughout our stay. The elevator banks are a bit confusing and even when we looked clearly lost no one offered to point us in the right direction. Most notably, my husband went to have a drink at the bar and was not acknowledged for a while as the bartender served all the Japanese business men who sat after him. Again, we didn’t have a bad stay but relative to expectations and our experience at other Small Luxury Hotels of the World particularly in other parts of Asia, we were left wishing we had stayed at the FS. We did elect to pay for the spa facilities one morning. Facilities are small but nice. I ended up leaving my Burberry swim hanging in the bathroom after checkout and the hotel found it which I was grateful for and shipped it back to me (at my expensive)."
