PB hotel design editorial

Cat Street in Harajuku has always belonged to a particular strain of Tokyo cool — unhurried, design-literate, resistant to the grandiose — and TRUNK(HOTEL) CAT STREET, completed in 2017 by Mount Fuji Architects Studio, fits that character precisely. The property is spread across two adjacent four-storey buildings, their dark steel facades stepping back in tiered balconies thick with cascading greenery, the whole composition feeling less like a hotel insertion than a considered piece of neighbourhood infrastructure. Stone-walled planters and mature trees soften the street threshold, while a teak-decked terrace opens toward the canopy at first floor, making the exterior dining space feel genuinely embedded in the surrounding urban garden. Jamo Associates handled the interiors under a philosophy the hotel calls 'Tokyo Design' — a commitment to upcycled materials and Japanese-made furnishings that shows in every room. Beds sit on platforms of rough-sawn timber, walls carry hand-applied script, and lighting mixes matte-black pendants with articulated reading arms in a way that feels assembled over time. The bar lounge is a warmer proposition: walls clad in aged wood panels, generous leather and velvet seating arranged in low conversational clusters, a neon sign the only concession to visual drama. Smaller rooms open onto the building's planted balconies through full-height glazed doors, with warm timber-slatted ceilings and vintage exhibition posters completing spaces that sit closer to a Tokyo creative's apartment than to conventional hospitality.
