PB hotel design editorial

From its position in Amman's Al Abdali district, the InterContinental Jordan has served as a fixed point in the city's social and diplomatic life since opening in 1963, making it one of the oldest international hotel brands continuously operating in the Jordanian capital. The sandstone-toned facade — clad in the warm buff limestone that Amman's municipal code has long required of its buildings — steps across a low hillside in a horizontal composition of eight floors, palm-lined terraces breaking the massing at street level and giving the property a more residential scale than its 464 rooms would otherwise suggest. Interiors across the property show evidence of successive renovation campaigns, the rooms now presenting two distinct registers. One category leans toward a warmer, more traditional palette — walnut-panelled headboard walls, patterned carpets with scrollwork detailing, upholstered armchairs in cream — while a newer wave of guest rooms has moved toward lighter, more pared-back finishes: stone-effect wall cladding in greige tones, coral upholstered chaise seating, and brass floor lamps anchoring a cooler, quieter atmosphere. The club lounge works most confidently, floor-to-ceiling black-framed glazing drawing in Amman's ochre roofscape at dusk, with copper-thread curtain panels and button-tufted armchairs arranged to face the view. The all-day dining restaurant layers Moroccan-inflected perforated screens against polished travertine floors, dark pendant cage lighting, and open terracing — a vernacular vocabulary applied with genuine restraint.

"I visited Amman for three nights, and booked a room at the Intercontinental. I sent the hotel an email a few days before my arrival with a few questions and room preferences. Correspondence was swift & professional and my room met my wishes. On arrival, I was quickly checked in by Saif, who was friendly and efficient and spoke English fluently. My room on the 3rd floor was of average size for a five-star hotel. It came with a comfortable king bed, with one multi-socket by the bed. There was another multi-socket by the desk. No adapters needed. There was also an armchair and a coffee table as well as a safe. Four 0.5 L water bottles were proved daily. I found the AC to be a bit inadequate; despite turning it on fully, the temperature frequently rose up to 23.5 °C. This was in May – I wonder how it copes with summer heat. Overlapping curtains did a good job keeping the room dark after sunrise. The bathroom came with a separate bathtub and shower cubicle. While the bathtub took a while to fill up, water pressure both in the handheld as well as the overhead shower were fine. Wall-mounted containers of shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, hand soap and body lotion were provided. I would prefer individual minibottles for hygiene reasons and find this the wrong place to save money on. On that note, no shaving or dental kits were proved either, those were only available on request. Felt like penny-pinching from a five-star, really. Bathrobes and slippers were provided. Breakfast was served in the lobby restaurant daily from 6 to 11 at a price of 17.330 JOD net, but I did not try it this time. I did have lunch at the Lebanese restaurant twice, and service was well-intentioned and friendly and the food excellent. Room service also worked well: the food was quickly prepared and tasty. Prices were very reasonable by Western standards but expensive considering the local price level. There is also a Mexican restaurant as well as an Indian one and a Sushi Bar, but the last two were closed during my visit. The outdoor pool is heated and kept at 31 degrees. It was a joy to swim in, however the opening hours were really short, from 9 am to 6 pm only. While everyone I talked to were friendly and well-intentioned, it seemed to me that both at the pool as well as in the restaurant, some staff members had a very basic grasp of English, limited to some phrases only. This made communication a bit problematic at times. The hotel is located in central Amman. I walked all the way to the Roman Theatre, but it is a longish walk. Yellow taxis abound and charge only 2 JOD for trips within the city centre area. At 2nd Circle, a few minutes' walk away, there are small shops for snacks and drinks as well as restaurants and a currency exchange, Alawneh Exchange, with good rates (bring your passport). I paid a very reasonable rate of 105 EUR/night. If my travels take me to Amman again, I am more than happy to return to the Intercontintental."
