PB hotel design editorial

Esentai Tower, the slender 38-storey glass needle that punctuates Almaty's Al-Farabi Avenue, was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and completed in 2013 as part of a mixed-use development that also contains a luxury shopping mall and a residential tower — the kind of integrated urban campus that Central Asian cities were building with particular ambition in the post-Soviet boom years. The Ritz-Carlton Almaty fills the hotel floors of that tower, and the building's greatest design asset is entirely geographical: the Tian Shan mountains rise directly behind the city, and from the upper floors the snow-capped peaks fill the full floor-to-ceiling glazing as though a painter had been commissioned to provide the backdrop. The interiors pursue a warm internationalism — rosewood-veneer case goods, cognac leather headboards set within ebonized frames, coffered ceilings trimmed in brushed gold — that situates the property closer to the grand-hotel tradition than to the corporate minimalism that the building's curtain-wall exterior might suggest. Guest rooms carry parquet floors in a warm honey tone, while the upper-floor restaurant deploys mustard-upholstered armchairs and dark walnut tables, their geometry deliberately simple so nothing competes with the panorama of the Zailiysky Alatau range beyond. A mid-level terrace, dressed with tensile sail canopies, woven resin furniture, and planters dense with box and standard roses, carves a surprisingly garden-like pause into the all-glass development around it.

The Ritz-Carlton, Almaty Reviews

"The property has decent service standards and the staff were responsive to requests. The service in my opinion needs a consistent level of excellence for a Ritz-Carlton. Things like assistance with luggage are basic expectations for a luxury brand but I note that you have to ask for staff to assist you. The breakfast is very expensive and although you can order room service, you cannot order a la carte in the restaurant during breakfast. So to eat a small breakfast at the restaurant on a rushed morning, you either pay 30000 tenge plus taxes, or, you can leave."

"This is an excellent location and a beautiful hotel. The room was clean and spacious. The shower was excellent. Breakfast buffet was just ok. For the price the food wasn't great. There is a mall right next door. Hotel had easy access for taxi's and Ubers. I would stay again"

"During our stay in Almaty, we had the pleasure of visiting the cocktail bar on the 30th floor of the The Ritz-Carlton, Almaty. The cocktails were expertly crafted, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The service was exceptional throughout our visit. A special thanks to the young bartender, Sayat, whose friendliness, knowledge, and passion for mixology made the experience even more enjoyable. We’d also like to recognize Almas, the porter, for his warm hospitality and welcoming attitude from the moment we arrived. Together, they made our evening truly memorable. If you’re looking for a sophisticated yet relaxing place to enjoy great cocktails in Almaty, this is definitely a must-visit."

"We absolutely loved our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Almaty! We spent several days at the hotel during our visit to Kazakhstan, and it exceeded every expectation. The hotel itself is stunning—beautifully designed, impeccably maintained, and luxurious. Our accommodations were spacious, spotless, and incredibly comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic – excellent quality, huge variety, and great service. For us as tourists, the location was perfect and made it easy to explore Almaty. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the people. We have stayed at many of the great hotels of the world, and we have never experienced a level of service quite like what we received at The Ritz-Carlton Almaty. Every employee we encountered was professional, warm, and genuinely committed to making guests feel welcome and appreciated. A special thank you to two employees who were just spectacular! Ramon from the welcome team is a gem. From the moment we arrived, Ramon made us feel like valued guests. He was consistently professional, kind, engaging, and provided genuine hospitality throughout our entire stay. We would also like to recognize Sayat at Vista Restaurant. Sayat was absolutely outstanding. Every time we saw Sayat, he greeted us so warmly and made us feel genuinely welcome and appreciated. Sayat’s professionalism, kindness, and engaging personality elevated our stay at The Ritz Carlton. We have traveled extensively and can honestly say that employees like Ramon and Sayat are exceedingly rare. Several other team members also deserve special recognition for their exceptional service: Aidana, Amina, and Ainur at the front desk, Elina at Vista Restaurant, and Bakdaulet who assisted us with our baggage upon departure. Each of these team members contributed to making our stay memorable and demonstrated the highest standards of hospitality. We cannot say enough great things about this hotel. The accommodations, location, dining, and facilities were all outstanding, but it was the people who made this stay unforgettable. We highly recommend The Ritz-Carlton Almaty and look forward to returning."
