PB hotel design editorial

Two symmetrical white wings framing a gilded rotunda, the whole composition mirrored perfectly in the still waters of the Ishim River — this is how The St. Regis Astana announces itself to Kazakhstan's capital, a city that has spent the past quarter-century constructing an identity from scratch. WATG designed the building with that ambition in mind, giving the 2017 property a massing that gestures toward neoclassical grandeur while the rotunda's golden dome and flanking spire-like fins introduce something altogether more singular, closer to a civic monument than a conventional hotel block. Wimberly Interiors carried that dialogue indoors, threading neo-classical architecture — coffered ceilings, deeply panelled walls in pale leather, dark-stained oak floors — with a contemporary sensibility that keeps the 120 rooms and 23 suites from feeling merely formal. Fur-throw bed runners and small bronze horse sculptures scattered through the guest rooms quietly reference Kazakh nomadic heritage, while the upper-floor pool and restaurant operate in an entirely different register: floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the illuminated arc of a cable bridge against the night sky, the mosaic-tiled pool glowing electric blue against taupe limestone, the restaurant wrapped in burgundy velvet banquettes and dark-veined marble tabletops. More than 400 pieces of contemporary art commissioned for the property draw on the steppe's visual culture without resorting to ethnographic illustration — a distinction that gives the interiors genuine depth.

"This was my first visit to Astana, and my first time in Kazakhstan. The hotel made me incredibly welcome and were helpful and professional to a person. I was visiting my son here, and I don’t speak Russian or Kazakh, but all the staff spoke amazing English which I was very grateful for. My son and I were keen to do some sightseeing, and as it was a special occasion I was visiting for, to have some nice meals. The concierge at the hotel showed us some good places to go, and recommended excellent restaurants. Then booked them for us too. We had drinks and food in the fabulous hotel bar a few times, and they made dangerously good cocktails, including the best bloody Mary I’ve ever had! I used the spa and the gym during my stay and both are really good, the gym especially which is very well equipped for a hotel gym. The room was absolutely superb. Great products in the bathroom and well stocked with water and tea and coffee. Fresh fruit was provided too, and the mini bar was a bit too tempting… the bed and linen were really amazing, and I’m not as young as I used to be so a good bed is really important! My only issue was the heat of the room, but I understand that heating is provided centrally in the winter, so nothing could be done about it. It was fine though, I just opened a window! All in all, this was a wonderful few days. I was able to see my son and the hotel was the icing on the cake. (The hotel also gave him a birthday cake! We were so touched by this gesture. And it was delicious) Thank you to all the staff at the hotel for a superb experience."

"If you are seeking luxury in Astana, this is the place to book. Exceptional service, rooms, cleanliness... it is a beautiful and extraordinarily comfortable retreat. Only thing is that I never saw a butler during our entire 2 night stay... and this is something St Regis is known for. Nevertheless, we received top level service from the well trained, professional, and fluent English speaking staff. Nothing to complain about regarding service. I booked 2 suites through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts, and we were graciously upgraded to a suite with river view, and the other to a larger size suite. Both were beautiful and well appointed. We enjoyed the high quality breakfast very much. Had dinner at Asakusa Izakaya and La Riviere. Neither seemed terribly authentic to me... they were more trendy than authentic. The food was decent, not fantastic, prices were, as expected, on the higher side... but overall good service at both. We really enjoyed the special Nauryz event they hosted in the lobby, featuring live music and traditional snacks. It was elegantly done and beautiful. I highly recommend this property, and would definitely choose to stay here again if I ever make it back to Astana."
