PB hotel design editorial

That undulating copper-toned facade rising beside the Ishim River — its vertical fins rippling across curved glass walls in a form that evokes both a draped textile and the steppe wind that shapes this part of Kazakhstan — announces The Veil as one of Astana's more architecturally committed hospitality statements. The building's sculptural exterior, with its deep arched cutouts and warm oxidised cladding catching the low Central Asian light, draws a deliberate visual line between the hotel's name and its physical presence: the structure itself performs the gesture it describes. Inside, two distinct registers operate simultaneously. Guest rooms are finished in wide-plank oak, with floor-to-ceiling buttoned headboards in camel velvet rising almost to the ceiling, globe pendant lighting in a lineage that traces back to Michael Anastassiades, and a palette of forest green, plum, and warm grey that feels closer to contemporary European hotel design than to the maximalism more commonly associated with the region's newer properties. The restaurant takes a harder industrial turn — exposed black steel ductwork, dark brick, bottle-lined columns, and iron-frame casement windows framing the city skyline — functioning almost as a separate design statement within the same building. The spa completes the sequence with travertine mosaic, curved polished concrete walls, and a fibre-optic ceiling, the arched window frames echoing the facade's signature curves from the inside out.

The Veil Reviews

"Contrary to some of the old reviews on TA this is a good, warm and memorable hotel. It’s true that the architecture and internal design is like nothing you will have seen before! Think - living inside an industrial gas tank. The food both dinner and breakfast is really fantastic, and for the western customer not expensive. Excellent quality. The hotel has great choice of eating venues. Now onto the rooms. These are individual and not as you might expect. The corridors are industrial and inside the room is well kitted out but requires some exploration to get familiar with switches, how to access coat store, etc. The shower was large but nowhere to place a bottle or soap. The toilet was fine but in my room it was not well cleaned. The washing is kind of in the room The bed is very comfortable. The internet was excellent. The in room bar is very well stocked. Overall is was very goos and I would stay again. Reserve dinner in all venues in advance."

"While The Veil is a beautifully designed hotel, it's also a glaring example of "form over function." First of all, I would not recommend staying at this hotel in the winter. None of the windows are double-paned, and all of the common areas, including the restaurants, are freezing cold. I even felt bad for staff. To make matters worse, the heater didn't work in our room. And, while they did eventually move us to a warmer room, it took them 2+ days to do so, and only after they continued to assure us the heater worked fine. It didn't, as the room they finally moved us to was significantly warmer. Not only did they not apologize for this hassle, or help us switch rooms, but on multiple occasions staff members entered our room without knocking first! Good restaurants, good location, but the staff needs some serious training. And again, while the hotel might be comfortable in the summer months, it certainly wasn't a place I'd recommend in December."

"The Receiption confirmed that the spa is open from 9.00 am until 9.00 pm, however, the spa people refused to turn on the jacuzzi at 8.30 pm. Their justification - because they work until 8.45 pm and don’t want to be bothered by customers. In this case, the official hours should be changed 9.00 am to 8.30 pm. After a long day, flights and hard work, I was planning to spend few hours at jacuzzi and faced such unpleasant experience. Will not be back, definitely."

"Quarky design, very attentive staff, hearty breakfasts. The room is large made with good quality materials. BUT, I have a very small window just under the wall. Effectively staring at a concrete wall. Judging from outside some rooms have huge windows others don’t have windows. The sink is in the room and not in the bathroom, which is also not great unless you are staying on your own. The wifi doesn’t work. There is no gym. Surely, one can find a room to squeeze some gym equipment. Overall, the hotel is not bad but it certainly is not worth the money they charge you."
