PB hotel design editorial

Karen, the leafy Nairobi suburb named for Karen Blixen and carrying the particular atmosphere of colonial Kenya's farming highlands, provides Hemingways Nairobi with its emotional and architectural grammar. Set on several acres of manicured grounds where jacaranda and wisteria climb white-painted pergolas beside a lap pool ringed with palms, the property draws on the Anglo-colonial domestic tradition — gabled rooflines, deep verandas with balustraded railings, pale sage-green rendered facades — to construct something closer to a grand private estate than a conventional city hotel. The 45 suites are distributed across low-rise blocks that step gently down the hillside, framing views toward the Ngong Hills that Blixen made famous. Inside, the interiors work a carefully calibrated nostalgia: exposed timber roof trusses soar over four-poster beds dressed in gauze canopies, wide-plank hardwood floors anchor rooms furnished with striped dhurrie rugs, rattan occasional chairs, and walls hung with archival wildlife photography and portrait prints. The mural-scale landscape painting of the Ngong Hills backdrop in the suites grounds each room in its specific geography. The restaurant pulls in a different, more urban register — verde antico-painted columns rise past pressed-metal ceilings to frame a bar clad in warm-toned timber joinery, channeled emerald banquettes, and bentwood café chairs that owe something to Viennese precedent. It is a room that manages, against some odds, to feel simultaneously colonial-era Nairobi and entirely contemporary.

"Start of our first Safari, we booked an Elewana Sky Safari, We landed at 3 am in Nairobi and would like to thank everyone for the welcome at the Nairobi Airport and driving us to the Hemingway Hotel were we stayed a night. We visited the Giraffe center what was educational , we had no idea there are three different Giraffes in Africa. The children loved feeding the Giraffes and so did we! next morning it went off to the small Wilson Airport were our sky Safari started."

"I had a really great stay at Hemingways Nairobi. The hotel is beautiful, quiet, and very relaxing. The rooms are large, very comfortable, and the view is amazing. What stood out the most was the service. The staff are very friendly, professional, and always ready to help with a smile. They really make you feel welcome. The food at the restaurant was also very good and the overall atmosphere of the hotel is calm and elegant, which makes it a perfect place to relax while visiting Nairobi. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend Hemingways Nairobi to anyone visiting the city."

"We stayed at Hemingways for 24 hours before flying home to the USA. The property is beautiful, with grand rooms and manicured gardens, but our check-in experience left a lot to be desired. As an Amex Platinum cardholder, the hotel reached out to inquire about our arrival time and to ask whether we wanted to check in as early as noon. I said we would be arriving around 1 pm, though in actuality we arrived closer to 2 pm. However, when we arrived, we were informed that the room with two beds I had reserved was not ready and would only be available after 6 pm, which left us with no place to freshen up and change before our 4 pm spa appointment. We were then offered a room with one bed and told that if we accepted it, we would have to relinquish our reservation for two beds. Suffice it to say, it is bizarre for a hotel to know when we are arriving, not have the reserved room ready, and then offer something less than what was prepaid. We were also told that the hotel was fully booked and had no other options. My friend and I protested, and after about twenty minutes, they magically found an empty room for us to use until our actual room was ready. The disorganization—or lack thereof—is something that should not be happening at a property that boasts Michelin credentials. Other highlights of Hemingways include the lovely gym and spa. We had 90-minute massages, which were very good. The butler service is nice, though the phones don’t always work to reach them, and the golf carts that take guests up the steep hill to reception are very much appreciated. Breakfast was decent but nothing to rave about. I’ve seen more expansive buffets at other hotels. In short, I enjoyed my stay but wasn’t overly impressed."
