PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the leafy residential enclave of Kitisuru, where Nairobi's northern suburbs give way to dense canopy and the city's pace noticeably loosens, Kwetu Nairobi — Curio Collection by Hilton — makes a persuasive case for the boutique hotel as neighbourhood institution rather than urban landmark. The name itself sets the tone: kwetu means our home in Swahili, and the property's low-rise white rendered volumes, arranged around a long lap pool courtyard, carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed private compound rather than a corporate hospitality block. Bronze sculptural cattle grouped at the pool's edge anchor the outdoor space with a distinctly East African sensibility, while the retractable-roof bar and restaurant above frames uninterrupted views across the surrounding forest canopy through full-height glazing. Inside the guestrooms, the design navigates comfortably between international hotel convention and local reference. Louvred timber shutters flank picture windows that push the green tree cover into the foreground of each room, while etched landscape panels above the headboards — rendered in the style of agricultural engravings — give the walls a narrative quality that resists the generic. Warm cove lighting in amber tones, grey upholstered sofas, and oak-finished joinery keep the palette calm without feeling anonymous. The all-day dining restaurant takes a different register entirely: bleached timber floors, marble-topped communal tables, and planted olive trees produce something closer to a Mediterranean brasserie, a deliberate contrast to the forest-facing rooms above.

"We stayed at Kwetu for 6 nights and had some positive and negative experiences. Although I will say the positives outweighed the negatives. 1, good breakfast but slow service. Sometimes to the point where your fruit juice will turn up when you’re leaving or you will get your coconut french toast without the coconut. 2, fidgety lighting but eventually you get there. 3, close to everything we needed. So we decided that after our short break at Mount Kenya instead of going to the JW Marriot we could make another booking at Kwetu. BIG mistake on our part!!! We spoke to someone in reception about needing a room to book our party 2 adults & 2 kids. We were in a suite but it was pointless because one of the sofa beds didn’t convert into a bed they just put covers on the sofa which was very narrow and we didn’t feel it was safe nor comfortable. So there was no real use for the suite for us. Hence I asked for another room that could fit us all. The guy at reception gave us a quote and then told us as we were hilton honours members that he could do a price up for 2 rooms and gave us a quote again in £. We agreed and left. When we came back we were charged double what we had agreed. Upon questioning this we were now being told the price we were given was for ONE room and the price wasn’t £ it was USD. Had we known it was USD we would have questioned why it was so cheap! Me and my husband both know what we were told however as my husband can speak kiswahili fluently he overheard staff saying that the member of staff dealing with us shouldn't have given us this price. When this particular member of staff came back on shift we were now being told different things. All in all I totally regret cancelling the JW Marriot. The service they offer at Kwetu is not worth the prices they charge and they totally ruined my experience of staying at the Kewtu. Its a matter of principle and it’s very clear we were unethically missold the rooms and they are happy to take your money and then tell you that you are valued here. Nope. They only value your £££. Stay away."

"The breakfast staff at Meko: Imelda, Lydia, Steve, Amanda, Purity, Ninah, and Milton are amazing and attentive. Their service is professional, friendly, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question or wanted to order, they were there. I grew to love Kenya and this Hotel’s staff in the short two weeks I was here. I would come again and again. I am grateful to have experienced my stay here and also sad that I am leaving. Thank you so much!"

"We stayed here for a few days pre safari and post Diani beach before flying out. The hotel is located in a great area of Nairobi which is green, hilly and clean. It is fairly brand new, and that feeling comes through in everything. Upon arrival, the staff was excellent and welcoming, with drinks and smiles. Check in was fairly smooth and we went straight to eat breakfast at the main restaurant, Meko (which was EXCELLENT for breakfast, lunch and dinner - fantastic meals throughout). Our rooms were next to each other and well appointed. All the expected bits like safe, hair dryer etc, extra points for the spray bidets, and a large tv. The old school phones added some nice charm as well! Coming and going from the hotel was easy - anytime we wanted to go somewhere drivers and cars were made available ASAP and we never felt like we had to worry about much - everything was handled for us. The coffee bar was also excellent, with great beverages and fresh croissants and pain au chocolat which my kids went to town on. Close by, you can visit Karura Forest, a ton of great restaurants, and what seems to be a suburban upscale part of Nairobi (Westlands if i'm not mistaken). On our last day, there was a fantastic live band by the pool near Meko, which was one of the highlights. Top quality atmosphere and vibe and great music too. For the most part, i felt like i was at a Thai resort, didn't feel at all like I was in a major city. The only areas worth improving upon - some of the fixtures werent superbly attached (one sink part came off once, which i'm assuming was teething issues). Secondly, the hotel is separated into multiple blocks so it can be a bit disorienting getting around initially, but you'll get around with 0 issues by day 2!"
