PB hotel design editorial

A cluster of whitewashed colonial pavilions set within the UNESCO-protected heart of Luang Prabang, their terracotta-tiled roofs and green-shuttered facades drawn from the Franco-Laotian administrative architecture that shaped this former royal capital, provided Aman with one of its most sympathetic building inheritances. Amantaka, which opened in 2009, was carved from a former provincial hospital complex dating to the early twentieth century — low-slung, single-storey structures arranged around lawns and mature frangipani trees, with deep covered verandas designed to catch the Mekong valley's intermittent breeze. The restoration, overseen with Aman's characteristic restraint, preserved the ensemble's institutional symmetry while dissolving any clinical memory. Inside the 24 suites, teak four-poster beds draped in white mosquito net canopies anchor rooms finished in bare lime-washed plaster, their floors laid with aged terracotta tiles that carry the patina of the original buildings. Cane-backed headboards, swing-arm iron reading lamps, and petite circular side tables in polished wood give each room the atmosphere of a carefully edited planter's residence rather than assembled hotel furniture. The dining room extends the same language outward — high white-painted vaults, slate-tiled floors, and seagrass armchairs around dark timber tables beneath slowly revolving ceiling fans. The pool terrace, framed by the reflected terracotta roofline, completes an image of tropical colonial calm that feels entirely earned by the buildings rather than imposed upon them.

"We stayed four nights during Lunar New Year in the Khan Pool Suite and had a wonderful experience. As big fans of the early Aman properties, this one did not disappoint. The hotel is a beautifully restored historic French hospital, giving it a very intimate and charming atmosphere throughout the stay. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Luang Prabang. The design is minimalist yet extremely tasteful, very much in line with the classic Aman aesthetic. Service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A special mention goes to the excellent GM Aurelien and RM Elodie, whom we enjoyed meeting and chatting with during our stay. I would highly recommend booking the Khan Pool Suite, as the heated in-room pool can be useful during cooler mornings or evenings. In terms of activities, the Mekong River cruise to Pak Ou Cave is a must-do, alongside with the city tour and alms giving. Another highlight was the horse riding through the countryside, which was extremely well organized and a great way to see the surrounding landscapes. We absolutely loved our time here and would highly recommend anyone reading this to visit Laos and Amantaka."

"Restaurant restroom. Old-style, pleasant scent. Understated design. Toilet paper provided. No bidet."

"Our stay at Amantaka has instantly become a core memory. An Aman experience is never easy to put into words. It lives in emotion and feeling—often beyond language—and Amantaka is no exception. Staying at an Aman has never been about price, but about value. This is especially true at Amantaka, where rates are often 2x of Rosewood and 5-6x higher than the city’s next best alternatives. And yet—Amantaka truly delivers. Three impressions stayed with us most powerfully. First, a profound and beautifully natural immersion into Laotian culture. From the food we enjoyed, to the stories shared, to the thoughtfully curated activities we participated in, everything felt authentic and deeply rooted in place. The alms-giving ritual, in particular, was extraordinarily spiritual—quiet, humbling, and unforgettable. Second, an overwhelming sense of peace. The serene grounds, the calming white French-colonial architecture, and the wellness facilities together create an atmosphere that gently slows time. It is a place where the outside world fades away, almost effortlessly. Third—and perhaps most defining—was the genuine human connection. At Taka, service transcends formality. What we experienced was something far rarer: real, heartfelt connection. From the manager personally scouring the city because she was worried I had “gotten lost” during an afternoon walk, to unhurried corridor conversations where personalities truly shone—every interaction felt sincere, warm, and deeply human. For all of these, we are profoundly grateful to Amantaka. The experience, in the highest sense of the word, was restorative."
