PB hotel design editorial

Strung along the banks of the Mekong where Luang Prabang's famous night market unfolds each evening, the Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel sits within a compound of French colonial-era buildings that once formed part of the town's administrative quarter — a UNESCO World Heritage setting that demands a certain restraint from any contemporary intervention. The property works with that inheritance rather than against it, preserving the pitched terra-cotta rooflines, louvered shutters, and colonnaded verandas that characterize the colonial streetscape, while threading a contemporary Lao sensibility through the interiors. Inside, the design draws on the craft traditions of northern Laos — hand-woven textiles in earthy indigos and warm saffrons, carved timber screens, and rattan furnishings that carry the weight of local making rather than imported convention. Bedroom palettes stay close to the landscape: raw linen, warm ochre, and the deep grain of tropical hardwood floors. The pool courtyard, tucked between the heritage structures, reads as a composed garden room, the water's edge framed by mature frangipani and low stone walls that borrow their character from Luang Prabang's temple compounds. Public spaces flow between covered veranda and open garden in the way the colonial buildings always intended, giving the hotel its unhurried atmosphere — the kind of place where the architecture does the work of slowing you down before the town itself finishes the job.

"I did a lot of research prior to our trip on hotels and activities. The Avani was a great choice for both. The rooms were spacious and functional. The staff went above and beyond throughout our trip. We went on their sunset cruise which was fantastic. The boat was great and again the service was wonderful. We also used a hotel car and driver to take us to the falls. He suggested we leave Daytona beat the crowds and he was right! We got to experience the beautiful falls with only a few other guests. By the time we left it was overwhelmed with tour groups. The drive and van were great."

"1. On the second day of my stay, I discovered animal droppings in the room. Concerned that it might be rodent feces, I was unable to sleep all night. The hotel claimed this was a normal situation and took no action, which I find completely unacceptable. 2. The slippers provided by the hotel showed clear signs of prior use. For a hotel charging nearly 2000 RMB per night, failing to provide a new pair of slippers is incomprehensible. 3. As a member staying on my birthday, since the booking was made through a third party, I received no greeting, no birthday wishes, and certainly no discount. However, promotional content on social media clearly states that members can enjoy a 22% discount, with no mention of third-party booking exceptions. This is very misleading."

"We had three wonderful nights here at the end of our time in Laos. The first impression was the train pick up and the vehicle screams quality along with the service as they provide fresh juice’s, water and local snacks to try as they transfer you to the hotel. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with plenty of hanging room and drawer space, we had booked a suite, which also has an outdoor area with a pair of loungers, a table for outdoor dining along with an L shape sofa Breakfast was good with a decent selection along with freshly made hot and cold offerings and speciality teas and coffees. The staff were all amazing, very polite, helpful and professional, one lady at reception was particularly helpful on evening as the Rosewood had forgot to send their car to collect us and she chased them up without asking. They also have two golf buggies that they will drop you off at town centre restaurants, bars and tourist spots if you need. Pool as other have said was very nice and during our stay remarkably quiet, huge fluffy towels are provided as is table service. They even organised some chairs and a table for alma giving one morning and a member of staff acted as a guide and photographer"

"My husband and I stayed at the Luang Prabang Avani for four nights. The room was attractive, had a balcony with comfortable chairs and the bed and pillows were very amenable to a good night's sleep. The breakfast was delicious, with Lao and western options. The buffet was so good we never ordered off the menu. The pool was so refreshing and long that we could do long laps. Finally, the staff were very kind and helpful and recommended and made reservations at great restaurants. Location was central and even though on Main Street, it was very quiet inside. Else will miss the charming city of Luang Prabang and the Avani!"
