PB hotel design editorial

Straddling a rocky stream that tumbles through jungle on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, the site that became Rosewood Luang Prabang was always going to demand something more than a conventional resort layout. The property's 23 tents and villas are arranged across a landscape where the Nam Khan tributary does much of the architectural work — stone-walled terracing, planted with red cordyline and tropical ferns, drops to the water's edge while dark-timber pavilions cantilevered above the stream echo the vernacular riverside structures found throughout this UNESCO-listed Lao city. The architecture draws on French Indochine colonial grammar — white-rendered arches, steeply pitched grey-tiled roofs, exposed dark timber trusses — layered over a distinctly Lao structural sensibility. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. The colonial-era main building houses a restaurant where herringbone-laid dark brick floors, gilded antique Burmese cabinets, and tiered pendant lights filtered through perforated metalwork create an atmosphere closer to a gentleman's club in Rangoon than a contemporary hotel dining room. The tented accommodations shift the mood entirely: deep indigo canvas ceilings, gold-painted wall murals referencing hill tribe textile motifs, carved wooden room dividers, and clusters of paper-lantern chandeliers frame views across paddy fields toward forested ridgelines. The more formal villa suites settle into cream linen, dark four-poster beds with turned-wood columns, and geometric stone-tile floors — quieter in tone, with framed vintage newspaper prints anchoring the Colonial revival sensibility throughout.

About

Hidden in the lush green jungle that surrounds the historic royal settlement of Luang Prabang, a river—emanating from a flowing waterfall—runs through the heart of this exotic retreat. Taking its cue from the French-Lao architecture for which the town is known, the interiors reflect the influences of ancient temples, while luxurious tented villas celebrate the explorer spirit.

"Our family stay at Rosewood Luang Prabang was exceptional from start to finish. The service was warm, intuitive, and genuinely personal, every staff member delivered hospitality at the highest level. Jonathan's, the Managing Director, presence and leadership were evident throughout the resort, creating a culture of excellence that truly elevates the experience. The food was superb, refined, beautifully presented, and a perfect balance of local Lao flavors and international sophistication. The grounds are breathtaking, set within lush jungle surroundings with a serene river running through the property. A flawless stay!"

"This amazing hotel is located a short ride from the Lang Prabang UNESCO world heritage centre Rooms are in separate pavilions beautifully constructed and furnished in traditional style and woven round a river with several waterfalls and a network of paths and rope bridges - make sure you go exploring We were delighted with our wide veranda with very comfortable seating so we could sit outside in the cool evening air surrounded by sounds of cicadas and running water from the waterfall The elephant theme runs through the whole hotel design including the Elephant Bridge Bar over the river - local rumour has it that if you correctly guess the number of elephants on the walls and roof of the bar you get a free drink?! The team is extremely friendly and helpful led by a superb general manager who is very much in evidence and runs an excellent hotel Outstanding in every respect!"

"Rosewood LPB gave us one of our best hotel experiences ever. We selected the hotel for the many experiences and outdoor trips they offer but the package came with so much more. You leave a busy road to be in a paradise setting in seconds. The hotel is located left and right of a little river, super private, splendid architecture and rooms that face the river so you feel in the middle of nature although you are just minutes away from LPB downtown. The most remarkable experience however (and we have seen a lot of 5 stars) was the wholehearted and kind service from all staff. Starting with MD Jonathan who has always had the time to share his many amazing outdoor tips, Noi who will guide you on the mountain bike trip (dont miss it, it leads you away from the masses into a remote village in the mountains where life still goes its traditional ways, to a remote temple and waterfall - meeting locals who enjoy your interest) and the one day hike to Kuang Si waterfalls (dont miss this either, it is not too demanding and leads you for 3 hours through remote Hmong and Khmou villages and then beautiful mountain jungle to the waterfalls - with loads of interesting details on Lao Life provided by Noi) and all the service team at the bar (built over the river), the fantastic, always-on concierge desk (no wish they could not help us with) and the restaurant. Do choose the rooms with the private pool at the river - it is worth every penny."

"Absolutely wonderful hotel! Everyone made us feel so welcome, with so many special touches. The hotel grounds are beautiful, spread amongst waterfalls, streams and jungle. The food is world class. We stayed in the riverside suite, which is large, luxurious and full of character. Thank you!"

"The hotel is stunning in every single way. Exceptional design both in the rooms and common areas. The service was also phenomenal, with very sincere and engaging staff. I booked most tours with the hotel and they did provide true luxury and genuine experiences, far from the crowd of tourists in the area. The best Rosewood I have stayed in, by far."
