PB hotel design editorial

A former governor's residence on the northern fringe of Luang Prabang, set within grounds that slope gently toward the Nam Khan river, gives the Sofitel Luang Prabang its most compelling quality — the feeling that you have arrived somewhere with a prior life, not merely a purpose-built resort. The colonial-era structures, their white-rendered walls and deep-pitched terracotta roofs arranged in a loose compound around a central reflecting pool and lush tropical gardens, carry the atmosphere of a Lao administrative estate translated into something quietly refined. The long, dark-tiled swimming pool runs parallel to the pavilion facades, its teak decking and timber sun loungers keeping the materiality grounded and warm. Inside, the interiors move between Indochine and contemporary Lao craft without losing their composure. Rooms are generous — dark hardwood four-poster beds dressed in white linen and gauze mosquito curtains, antique-style apothecary chests with brass ring pulls, slate-effect floor tiles anchored by cream wool rugs. Handwoven ikat textiles hang as wall panels rather than framed art, giving the rooms a sense of local authorship. The open-sided restaurant shelters beneath a draped canvas canopy and patterned cement-tile floor, its dark-lacquered cane chairs and ring chandelier striking a tone closer to colonial garden pavilion than hotel dining room — which, given the history of the site, feels exactly right.

"Great hotel. The hotel staff can’t do enough for you. They want to make your stay the best it can be."

"I had a very pleasant stay at Sofitel Luang Prabang. The facilities are excellent, the room was very spacious and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere of the property is beautiful and relaxing. I also had a two hour massage at the spa which was absolutely great, a perfect way to unwind during the stay. The only small suggestion would be to update the bicycles available for guests, as they could use some improvement. A very special thank you to Mei, who assisted me throughout my entire stay. As I was traveling solo, she was incredibly attentive and always available whenever I needed help. She even checked in to make sure I had arrived back safely after going out, which was very thoughtful and generous. Her calmness, kindness, and professionalism made me feel very welcome and well taken care of. She truly made the experience even more special."

"The Sofitel at Luang Prabang is a unique luxury resort that is well located for sightseeing in the city yet still remaining in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. Sofitel is known for its customer service and I’ve stayed at several of their properties, but even this location exceeded those standards. From the moment we checked in, Nouy, essentially became our concierge arranging for tours, transportation, all the hotel, amenities, spa, etc. Her efforts were above and beyond. All the staff around the clock, whether it was Mei, Leng, Yai and Chan, were so absolutely accommodating and pleasant. They are true professionals and ambassadors of the Sofitel brand. The spa facility is absolute gorgeous, and their masseuses, Dar and Took, are absolutely top-tier. Even the groundskeeper, Thongvanh, was so diligent in making our stay wonderful. Laos and Luang Prabang were an absolute wonderful visit, but I would specifically go back just to stay at this resort just as a destination."
