PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of Riga's UNESCO-listed Old Town, where Pils iela traces the medieval street pattern that survived both Soviet occupation and twentieth-century redevelopment, a nineteenth-century neoclassical townhouse was converted into the Grand Palace Hotel — the Latvian capital's most formally composed address. The entry sequence alone signals the building's register: a steel-framed glass vestibule with brass-rosette detailing opens onto a marble-floored lobby where a sweeping staircase with wrought-iron scrollwork and polished timber handrails rises beneath tiered crystal chandeliers, arched doorways framing each successive room in a rhythm drawn from European palace architecture. The 56 rooms carry that formality inward but ease it with warmer choices — tall grey upholstered headboards with ribbon-stripe detailing, geometric circle-patterned carpets in champagne and taupe, lacquered campaign-chest furniture with brass hardware, and paisley accent cushions that introduce colour without disrupting the neutral ground. The bar takes an entirely different position: teal-painted panelling with gold trim, antler chandeliers fitted with black shades, mounted stag heads, purple velvet drapes, and a mixed seating collection of mustard, chartreuse, and patterned armchairs arranged along a herringbone parquet floor — a hunting-lodge eclecticism that sits in deliberate contrast to the classical restraint upstairs. The terrace restaurant, set against a creamy Old Town facade with box-clipped topiary and wicker seating, gives the property its most quietly European moment.

"I booked two nights in two rooms at this hotel in connecting Deluxe King Rooms. The hotel is small and nice. I'll just cut to the chase on my rating by saying the smoking lounge detracts. The Pils Bar isn't a bar; it a smoking lounge. It is where the staff smoke during the day when the bar is closed (saw it both days when we were coming and going) and while it has three smoke eater machines in the ceiling, they do nothing to pull the smoke out. We spent the time it took for one drink on day one, then I went in to get a bucket of ice and some wine glasses on day two and both times our clothes smelled like cigar smoke. There is no other option for eating here except for a fine dining place, which is open to the bar so even that place smells like smoke. I have seen the hotel's responses here saying they maintain the "...tradition..." in their bar. It is all locals, mostly smoking cigars. We did not want caviar or fine dining after a long day out walking around. We wanted salads and sandwiches but, alas, the hotel could not accommodate that if we didn't want smoke as part of the meal. So, we opted for room service at inflated prices plus a delivery charge. I asked today if all bars allow smoking, knowing the didn't; the response was one of pride...they are one of only two bars that allow it (Kepinski is the other...or something like that). I don't mind bars having a smoking option, if that is what it is...an option. But this place is not a bar with a smoking option, it is a smoking bar and frequented mostly by locals, not guests. And FWIW, I think it is great if a hotel attracts locals, but it would be a much better experience if the hotel had a dining option that wasn't a Michelin restaurant for its guests to use. The rest of the hotel. The lobby is small; like non-existent. There is no place to sit down and relax, wait, read, have a coffee. The rooms are very nice in the sleeping rooms. Our king beds were great, the pillows were varied, and the rooms were spacious. The beds were very comfortable and the blackout curtains were great. You need those blackout curtains during the months when the sun sets at 10:15 and rises at 4:15. The bathrooms are OK. They have the shower/but combos with the 2 1/2 foot step up into the shower, a shower head positioned at about 6 ft 3 inches, and a partial glass enclosure. They get slick. One sink, and toilets with seemingly intentionally loose toilet seats. Breakfast is good. Cold buffet with some sad bacon plus order off the menu eggs and pancakes. It was good and filling, and service was attentive. Would we return again? Nope. The bar is important to us when we travel and they don't have one. No where on the website does it say the bar is a smoking lounge that I saw or see right now. I understand I'm making a big deal of this and some may not care, but with my wife and daughter this bar is completely unusable. And, no matter what the hotel's responses say regarding smoke machines, they are not at all effective. And, again, if you dine in the restaurant for big bucks you will be smelling all the smoke wafting in from the smoking lounge. If not for the bar, I would have given it one more star at least. It's just so disappointing that a luxury hotel doesn't have a usable bar if you don't want your suitcase smelling like a cigar."

"We had a 4 night stay at this beautiful hotel with friends for a birthday celebration. Rooms were very clean and beautifully decorated loved the turn down service leaving fresh water and little treats each night. Only downside for us was there was no blackout curtains just roman blinds that let in the early morning light. Also it said bathrooms had underfloor heating however we did not have this. The bar was lovely staff friendly and the snack we got with drinks were very tasty. Would definitely stay here again highly recommended."
