PB hotel design editorial

Among the most ornate surviving Art Nouveau facades in Riga's Old Town — a city that holds one of the densest concentrations of Jugendstil architecture anywhere in Europe — the early twentieth-century building housing Neiburgs Hotel announces itself with characteristic Latvian exuberance: stucco female masks, barley-twist columns, and deeply modelled foliate cartouches pressed into its ochre-painted facade. The conversion, completed in 2012, preserved the building's elaborate plasterwork ceiling cornices intact, leaving them to coexist with a decidedly contemporary interior sensibility — patterned Moroccan-inflected wallpaper panels serving as headboards, herringbone parquet underfoot, and black adjustable task lamps substituting for period lighting. The lobby library, with its floor-to-ceiling dark timber shelving and a pair of low-slung purple channel-back armchairs that sit somewhere between 1970s Italian and contemporary Scandinavian, captures the hotel's broader approach: period architecture held lightly, furnished with conviction rather than deference. The restaurant below carries the same intelligence — bentwood cafe chairs and white-clothed round tables sharing the room with striking pendant light fixtures assembled from clusters of articulated black workshop lamps, the whole space washed in light through the building's original tall arched windows. Across the hotel's 55 rooms, the palette stays disciplined: slate, oat, and white, with original moulded ceilings doing the decorative work that lesser conversions would crowd out with pattern and colour.

"We were delighted with our stay at Neiburgs. The hotel is superb, immaculate and so comfortable! Breakfast was delicious with an incredible variety of products. It was served in the beautiful dining room by a very attentive staff. We had dinner once. Top notch… so refined! To crown it all, it is in the heart of the ancient town, everything possible on foot. We will be back!"

"We stayed in one of the top floor rooms with a loft bedroom, sleeper sofa and 1.5 baths. Perfect for us and our college age son. The kitchenette was very handy. They could improve the lighting which was dim throughout. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. The location was excellent. I would stay here again."

"Location The location is perfect - right in the middle of the old town and also very close the river and only a 20mins walk to the centre of the city . It’s very easy to walk out and find food and drink and the historic sites . It was a €17 bolt ride from the airport (€10 back) so a nice cheap city to hotel route. It is on a busy street with bars open till 4am and at the weekends it is very noisy. With the windows closed it was okay but as it was 24 degrees when we stayed and the air con didn’t seem to click on we had to open the windows. That night it was 6am before we slept. Room We booked a standard room as part of a BA holiday. We were at the front of the hotel with excellent views. The room was small - maybe okay for a weekend or one business traveller. We had cooking facilities but no pans etc to use them. Fridge is large enough for left overs etc. bathroom had a full sized bath which is excellent. The bed was comfortable but the pillows hard - there didn’t seem to be a pillow menu. There isn’t any room service. Normal toiletries like shampoo conditioner etc were provided. Food and Drink Breakfast was part of our package and it was adequate. Some things were missing from a normal spread like cereals, cooked to order eggs and the bread selection was very basic. You help yourself to coffee which isn’t the normal experience for a hotel of y is levels they offer sparkling wine but only one glass and only at the weekends which is just odd (it was €21 for a bottle of local fizz at a local restaurant so but can probably buy for €6 so just odd to cut corners here). They had yogurt but only in juice jugs and not kept cold so I avoided. There is a restaurant which is only open Tuesday to Saturday and no bar / room service offered. 2 bottles of water and tea / coffee is provided in the room. Facilities There is a gym and spa but we didn’t t visit. Leaving We left our bags with reception while we had another hour in town. When we came back these were unattended in reception - we could have easily walked out with other people’s bags - this should be more secure. Bolt back to the airport was €10. Pls note that you have to walk to the other side of the occupation Museum to be picked up as the old town is pedestrianised."

"the Neiburgs is situated in the heart of the Old town just down the road from the square. Perfect location very close to the Old Town and easily accessible on foot to the newer part of town. We had a twin bedded studio apartment at the back of the hotel. No noise but wasn’t sure if it was because we were there on a Monday night. Check in staff very helpful. The apartment was huge, a large spacious room which had everything you could think of amenities wise, from flannels, hairdryers, to plush bathrooms and slippers. It was spotlessly clean. Bathroom even had two sets of shampoos/shower gels, shower caps etc. Crisp white sheets, good pillows and comfy furniture. Kitchen area included complimentary waters, tea, coffee. We had 4 very large windows so light and airy. Breakfast was great, buffet with so many options, from fresh fruits, to smoked salmon, pastries and hot buffet choices. It was adequate. No options for bespoke omlettes. However, plenty of items to choose. My only gripe was no separate shower cubicle. Shower was over the bath, an adjustable head with excellent pressure. This hotel has old charm. Highly recommend."
