PB hotel design editorial

Among the most ornate surviving Art Nouveau facades in Riga's Old Town — a city that holds one of the densest concentrations of Jugendstil architecture anywhere in Europe — the early twentieth-century building housing Neiburgs Hotel announces itself with characteristic Latvian exuberance: stucco female masks, barley-twist columns, and deeply modelled foliate cartouches pressed into its ochre-painted facade. The conversion, completed in 2012, preserved the building's elaborate plasterwork ceiling cornices intact, leaving them to coexist with a decidedly contemporary interior sensibility — patterned Moroccan-inflected wallpaper panels serving as headboards, herringbone parquet underfoot, and black adjustable task lamps substituting for period lighting. The lobby library, with its floor-to-ceiling dark timber shelving and a pair of low-slung purple channel-back armchairs that sit somewhere between 1970s Italian and contemporary Scandinavian, captures the hotel's broader approach: period architecture held lightly, furnished with conviction rather than deference. The restaurant below carries the same intelligence — bentwood cafe chairs and white-clothed round tables sharing the room with striking pendant light fixtures assembled from clusters of articulated black workshop lamps, the whole space washed in light through the building's original tall arched windows. Across the hotel's 55 rooms, the palette stays disciplined: slate, oat, and white, with original moulded ceilings doing the decorative work that lesser conversions would crowd out with pattern and colour.

"the Neiburgs is situated in the heart of the Old town just down the road from the square. Perfect location very close to the Old Town and easily accessible on foot to the newer part of town. We had a twin bedded studio apartment at the back of the hotel. No noise but wasn’t sure if it was because we were there on a Monday night. Check in staff very helpful. The apartment was huge, a large spacious room which had everything you could think of amenities wise, from flannels, hairdryers, to plush bathrooms and slippers. It was spotlessly clean. Bathroom even had two sets of shampoos/shower gels, shower caps etc. Crisp white sheets, good pillows and comfy furniture. Kitchen area included complimentary waters, tea, coffee. We had 4 very large windows so light and airy. Breakfast was great, buffet with so many options, from fresh fruits, to smoked salmon, pastries and hot buffet choices. It was adequate. No options for bespoke omlettes. However, plenty of items to choose. My only gripe was no separate shower cubicle. Shower was over the bath, an adjustable head with excellent pressure. This hotel has old charm. Highly recommend."

"Whilst it’s in a great location and a beautiful building, there’s a few things that could be better. I had a basic double room on the top floor. There was a large wooden beam/pole between the bed and the rest of the apartment which if you want the loo in the night adds a little adventure trying to navigate it! The seating area was lit by a pendant light right above it. I banged my head on it every time I stood up (I’m 5’3”!) It’s got a hob but no pans or utensils so guess that’s for show only? The air con unit was so noisy I couldn’t use it so just opened windows instead. Fine in April but can imagine it’d be a pain come the summer. Did report to staff as it was a v loud constant squeak! Staff were v nice and room was v clean, just think there’s some design flaws to my room!"

"We stayed in the Studio Deluxe apartment for one night to celebrate my birthday, and it was a truly special experience. In the evening we enjoyed a lovely dinner at the hotel’s restaurant with the family (it is included in the Michelin Guide). Our apartment was a corner unit on the 5th floor, with a beautiful view over the Old Town street and towards the Dome Church. On a Tuesday night it was quiet enough, though it might be livelier and louder on summer weekends. The apartment was very tastefully decorated and cosy, with a thoughtful layout — a built-in kitchenette with a dining table set in a separate recess and a spacious lounge area seamlessly integrated with the sleeping space. It truly felt like a small, elegant apartment. A special mention goes to the memory foam pillows — we absolutely loved them. A place we would gladly return to."

"This hotel is perfect in all ways but one. The location could not be better. It's in the heart of the old town in a tastefully renovated old building which houses this small, comfortable, peaceful hotel which has a personal and intimate feel to it. The breakfast is good, the staff are friendly and I would have given it 5 out of 5 but for one thing - loud, unnecessary and irritating music at breakfast. The dining room is small, bright and attractive and is an ideal place to start the day with a leisurely meal while gazing out of the window at the quaint old buildings in the street outside. We did complain to the restaurant staff about the music but their esponse was that they couldn't do anything about it. Why does the management feel the need to pollute breakfast with loud, distracting and disturbing noise. The hotel advertises itself as a mindfulness hotel. Indeed, a sign behind the reception desk declares "Neiburg, A Mindful Hotel". Unnecessary and loud music at breakfast doesn't induce mindfulness, it actually leaves me quite stressed at the start of the day. Such a pity, for me it could otherwise have been a perfect hotel."

"We found the hotel decent enough, it was clean and the rooms were spacious. It also was in a great location. I did find the rooms not as great as the reviews, the furniture has a lot of marks on, the bed wasn't that comfy and the shower curtain wasn't great, however it was clean enough. I did want to use the Sauna but you had to book a slot for yourself to use it, so that I found strange. Hotel breakfast was ok, ive had alot better. Overall, I was happy enough and for the price we paid. Although I probably wouldn't recommend it."
