PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against one of the most isolated coastlines on earth, where the Mozambique Channel meets a private reserve of dry deciduous forest on Madagascar's northwest peninsula, Anjajavy Le Lodge was built entirely from local hardwoods in a vernacular that draws directly from the region's architectural traditions rather than importing a ready-made resort language from elsewhere. The structures — low-slung pavilions with steeply pitched thatched roofs carried on heavy timber frames — are assembled with the kind of structural honesty that makes the buildings feel grown from the site rather than placed upon it. Wide horizontal timber cladding, louvered plantation shutters, and deep overhanging eaves manage both climate and light without mechanical intervention. The twenty or so bungalows are fitted in a palette that runs to dark rosewood tones and warm amber, the walls paneled in richly grained local timber that wraps continuously across floors and ceilings to create an enveloping warmth. Four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting anchor each room, accompanied by woven rattan chairs and textiles in plum and ivory damask — a combination that gestures toward colonial comfort without pastiche. At dusk, the open-sided restaurant pavilion glows under a vaulted thatch canopy, its hardwood deck extending over the grass toward a long rectangular pool edged in dark timber decking, coconut palms framing the Indian Ocean beyond in a composition of almost theatrical calm.

"Anjajavy l’Hôtel exceeded my expectations in the quality of my oceanside villa and the ecolodge grounds, the eco-excursions to see the wildlife, the gourmet-level food, and the spectacular staff who made it all happen. I had just told the travel agent with whom I worked that I wanted to see the wildlife of Madagascar and she identified this property for me. Getting there is not easy, for me, a 2-seater plane from Tana, the capital city, but definitely worthwhile. You do feel like you're going to the ends of the earth and with that comes the ability to see wildlife that can be challenging to see close (like lemurs). I was able to see them each day, just by chance encounters, on the lodge property. I was also impressed that 40 of the 210 staff are there to support the protection of the wildlife that I came to see, many of which are endangered. In addition, the leadership make an effort to support the economic development of the region through the employment of local staff, and interactions with the local villages, particularly the children, to teach them about their local wildlife. The management of this large property is very impressive and clearly well-organized, including the senior leadership and all the department leaders. The best I've ever seen in my extensive travels. I encourage you to go and support their work."

"Brilliant place to stay. If you stay anywhere in Madagascar, stay here. In fact, thee is so kuch yo see and do here (I hesitate to say this but…) you don’t need to go anywhere else. Travelling around Madagascar is a challenge. This place is a dream. The beach cottages are perfect. Privet and yet so comfortable…. And the view! Incredible staff. Amazing food. Masses of different activities. I highly recommend combining a private fishing charter and lunch on a remote beach. Also the mangrove sunset boat trip was fun. Loved the pool and the genuine warmth and kindness of everyone. Lemurs all over the place. They don’t interact with humans but they get very close. Amazing to watch. Mouse lemurs, dancing lemurs and brown lemurs. Also recommend visiting local village and supporting the women."

"We were amazed by Anjajavy Le Lodge and the sheer feat of creating such a luxurious, sustainable retreat in such a remote part of Madagascar. From the moment we arrived, I felt like every detail had been thoughtfully considered. The lodge manager, Frederick, deserves special recognition. He met us at the airstrip (with Fabrio) and was warm, attentive, and clearly passionate about both the property and the guest experience. The entire team delivered fantastic service, always with a smile, and nothing ever felt too much to ask. The dining was outstanding. We especially appreciated how much care was put into the vegetarian options—each dish was creative, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Dominique took great care of us and when I asked for an Old Fashioned, they worked with me to make it absolutely perfect, which I needed after long days of activities! The activities were a highlight. Watersports were a blast, and the Coves Hike is an absolute must-do—stunning scenery and an unforgettable way to connect with the landscape. William took outstanding care of us and made our activities and pool experience wonderful. My only small suggestion is that some of the tours could be combined for a smoother experience, but honestly, that’s a very minor note. Tom was our guide for most of our tours and he was amazing. The villas were lovely, we had amazing and very private views. I recommend adding a USB/C connection for guests and note that the stairs to the second story are quite steep and not for older groups. We had the most incredible sunset views from our porch! The afternoon teas are amazing and give an unforgettable experience with the lemurs. We also love how they make each dinner an unique experience. We LOVED the goodbye song! Finally, we appreciate that the lodge gives back in conservation and support of the local community. If you’re considering a visit, do not miss this experience!"

"Anjajavy is a truly spectacular destination. Set in a breathtakingly remote part of Madagascar, it offers a rare chance to experience the natural beauty of the island in complete comfort and style. The location is stunning, with a pristine private beach that feels like a hidden paradise. The staff and service were outstanding — warm, attentive, and thoughtful in every detail. The food was consistently excellent, making each meal part of the experience. Whether relaxing by the beach, exploring the surroundings, or enjoying time with friends, Anjajavy is the perfect balance of luxury and authenticity. A true hideaway worth the journey"

"This lodge is one of the finest around, the staff was the absolute best. The grounds are intimate and well maintained. By far the best place we saw in our 2 weeks in Madagascar."
