PB hotel design editorial

The Lee Rubber Building, a 1930s Art Deco commercial landmark at the corner of Jalan Hang Lekir and Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, carries its original Chinese-English signage across a facade of cream render and dark granite base as though the intervening decades changed nothing. The conversion into Else Kuala Lumpur added a contemporary tower element above the heritage podium — visible in the images as a setback upper structure with planted terraces and dark-framed glazing — extending the building's presence while keeping the original corner composition legible from street level. The pool deck, edged in pale stone and terracotta brick with spiky tropical plantings, sits tucked between the old and new volumes, its geometry practical rather than performative. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. The ground-floor restaurant preserves the original double-height hall with its exposed concrete columns and clerestory light, anchoring a curved green banquette around a central planting of bird-of-paradise and monstera — a gesture that feels more Kuala Lumpur garden house than metropolitan hotel dining room. The guest rooms are quieter, dressed in herringbone-laid timber floors, plaster walls in dusty rose and warm grey, and original artwork in soft geometric forms. A Ligne Roset Togo chair appears in at least one room configuration, sitting alongside circular side tables in dark steel — a pairing that keeps the atmosphere closer to a considered apartment than a conventionally fitted hotel room.

"Else Hotel KL stands out as a property that remains genuinely exciting after years of frequent travel. The service provided by Nick was outstanding from the start, as he secured a workspace to ensure productivity during the wait for check in. He maintained contact via mobile messaging to confirm all requirements were addressed and personally delivered the room keys despite an offer to collect them from the desk. This level of initiative is rarely encountered and demonstrates a serious commitment to guest convenience. The guest rooms feature a curated selection of premium brands including Aesop amenities, Harman Kardon audio, Dyson hair dryers, and Lululemon yoga mats. The inclusion of a take home Aesop balm and premium footwear shows an intentional focus on the guest experience. Even minor details like the provision of branded Colgate toothpaste and meticulous housekeeping evidenced by intricate towel art confirm a high standard of care. For those who require reliable connectivity, the WiFi speed reaches 200mbps, which significantly outperforms the benchmarks found at typical Marriott properties. The dining experience also improves upon the standard hotel model by replacing the buffet with a made to order menu of fresh starters and mains. This property is an excellent choice for anyone who prioritizes modern design and precise service."

"Family Staycation, choose this hotel because of neighbourhoods, indeed so much difference compared many years ago, so many good foods and good shops. We wrote in for some request prior our arrival and all were responded fast by the General Manager. Everyday afternoon we out for local foods and at the evening can chill at their restaurants, all the staffs always have smile on their face. What my kids like was train station so near hotel and just 1 to 3 station to TRX and Pavilion. We definitely will come back again and recommend this hotel to all friends"

"Stayed at Else Kuala Lumpur and it delivered exactly what I look for in a staycation. The gym is clean, well-equipped, and actually enjoyable to train in, not just an afterthought. The pool area is calm, minimal, and perfect for a post-workout wind-down. Everything feels intentional, simple, refined, and effortlessly aesthetic. Perfect for a fitness + lifestyle reset."

"I recently stayed at Else Kuala Lumpur and had a genuinely memorable experience. The hotel strikes a perfect balance between modern luxury and thoughtful design, with a calm, understated atmosphere that feels like a retreat right in the heart of the city, which is Chinatown. The rooms were beautifully designed—with high-quality finishes and very comfortable bedding. I especially appreciated the attention to detail, from the lighting to the toiletries, which made the stay feel elevated without being over-the-top. Service was another highlight. The staff were friendly, attentive, and always willing to help, whether it was recommendations for local eating spots or assisting with small requests quickly and efficiently. The location is excellent, especially if you enjoy exploring on foot. It’s conveniently close to cultural landmarks, cafes, and vibrant street life, making it easy to experience Kuala Lumpur beyond just the typical tourist attractions. Overall, Else Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic choice for travellers who value design, comfort, and personalized service. I will absolutely stay here again."
