PB hotel design editorial

The Lee Rubber Building, a 1930s Art Deco commercial landmark at the corner of Jalan Hang Lekir and Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, carries its original Chinese-English signage across a facade of cream render and dark granite base as though the intervening decades changed nothing. The conversion into Else Kuala Lumpur added a contemporary tower element above the heritage podium — visible in the images as a setback upper structure with planted terraces and dark-framed glazing — extending the building's presence while keeping the original corner composition legible from street level. The pool deck, edged in pale stone and terracotta brick with spiky tropical plantings, sits tucked between the old and new volumes, its geometry practical rather than performative. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. The ground-floor restaurant preserves the original double-height hall with its exposed concrete columns and clerestory light, anchoring a curved green banquette around a central planting of bird-of-paradise and monstera — a gesture that feels more Kuala Lumpur garden house than metropolitan hotel dining room. The guest rooms are quieter, dressed in herringbone-laid timber floors, plaster walls in dusty rose and warm grey, and original artwork in soft geometric forms. A Ligne Roset Togo chair appears in at least one room configuration, sitting alongside circular side tables in dark steel — a pairing that keeps the atmosphere closer to a considered apartment than a conventionally fitted hotel room.

"Our stay at the hotel was wonderful from start to finish. The staff were fantastic, and Nick in particular could not have been more helpful or accommodating throughout our visit, especially at check in when I made an error in our booking. It was easily the best stay we had in three weeks of travel. Breakfast each morning was delicious and excellent quality. Location superb and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend for a stay in KL."

"I recently stayed at Else Kuala Lumpur and was thoroughly impressed by the warm hospitality and the hotel's gorgeous aesthetic. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome. The Highlights: Prime Location: The hotel is perfectly situated right beside Petaling Street. The surrounding area is vibrant and packed with an endless variety of restaurants and cafes, making it ideal for foodies. Exceptional Service: Huge thanks to Sharon the manager, who arranged my room perfectly, and Fara at reception, who was so accommodating with all my bookings and requests. They really make you feel at home! Design & Atmosphere: This is a true design hotel. Every corner is photo-worthy, blending a modern aesthetic with beautiful local elements. It’s clean, cozy, and has a great "home away from home" feel. Relaxation: If you stay here, you must try the flotation pod. It was the perfect way to float away the city stress—highly recommended! Breakfast: Unlike typical sprawling buffets, breakfast here is ordered via a menu. While there are fewer choices, the quality is off the charts. A Few Considerations: Parking: There is no onsite parking. They offer valet, but it only operates until 10:00 AM; after that, you’ll need to self-park. Street Noise: Since it's located on a busy street, there is some noise throughout the day. The soundproofing could be improved, but the vibe of the area makes up for it. Despite the minor parking and noise hurdles, this is a fantastic hotel with a great soul. I’d definitely stay again for the design and the wonderful team!"

"The Else hotel was just lovely; with such a nice warm, calm feel to it. The location is fab - right amongst it with lots of things to eat and see within a short stroll. Dispite double glazing, this did mean there was a little street noise, but not enough to disturb. The staff were all helpful, warm and friendly from the security/doorman to the breakfast greeter. The style is really well thought out - neutral tones with modern features and a chic industrial vibe from its days as a rubber factory. I had the entry level room, which was a good size for 1 person with a lovely, comfy king bed and good sized shower. Aesop amenities were a special touch too! I didn't get to use the gym or pool, but both looked great. Breakfast was a nice mix or local and international meal options. Overall, lovely little boutique hotel in a great location for KL exploration. Would stay again!"

"My wife and I stayed at Else KL during our first ever trip to Southeast Asia! The room was beautifully designed, comfortable and clean. The beds were excellent and everything you’d need was there without feeling cluttered. Climate control was straightforward which sounds like a small thing but makes a real difference after a long day of exploring in the heat! Breakfast was a highlight. Rather than the usual buffet, you get an à la carte menu with an appetiser, main and drink, and the quality was soo impressive. The hotel also had a pool, bar and restaurant. All were well done and the overall atmosphere of the hotel strikes a rare balance between boutique intimacy and proper amenities. The location is ideal. Petaling Street and Chinatown are essentially on your doorstep, with excellent restaurants choices and street shopping within a few minutes walk. Easy access to public transport was also close by. Highly recommend Else to anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur, whether it’s your first visit or your tenth! We’ll be back for sure!"

"My wife and I recently stayed here for 4 nights. We loved the boutique approach to the hotel. Our room was clean, large and comfortable. The location was perfect for us in central KL. The restaurants in the hotel were exceptional. Staff was friendly and quick to respond to anything we needed. It was an exceptional value as we got discounts on spa services and free breakfast. Due to the location we had some noise from the neighborhood but was not too bad. We would definitely stay here again."
