PB hotel design editorial

Framed by the Petronas Towers on one side and the green canopy of KLCC Park on the other, few hotels anywhere carry a more charged address. Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur sits at the base of the twin towers that Caesar Pelli completed in 1998, sharing the same masterplanned KLCC development and inheriting by proximity one of the great urban panoramas of Southeast Asia. The 33-storey property, which opened in 1998 with 643 rooms and suites, was designed to complement rather than compete with its famous neighbors — its stepped, pagoda-influenced roofline and warm stone cladding pulling the building toward a distinctly Malaysian register rather than the cool glass curtain wall of its surroundings. The interiors balance that same tension between local identity and international luxury. Guest rooms are furnished with botanical-patterned carpets in deep teal and gold that reference Malaysian flora, paired with dark-stained timber millwork, lacquered bedside tables, and accent cushions in chartreuse and jade. The lounge bar takes a more dramatic turn — curved walnut-paneled vaulting sweeps overhead in undulating ribs, an elaborate chandelier of spun glass filaments cascades above leather club chairs in honey and amber, and a grand piano anchors one corner with the confidence of a room that expects to be taken seriously after dark. The outdoor pool terrace, ringed with cream parasols and mature tropical planting, looks across the park canopy toward the city skyline with a composure that the surrounding towers, for all their height, cannot quite match.

"The Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur is a special hotel for sure; we had a two-day conference hosted there and loved it. The rooms for the event were perfect for the occasion; the food and atmosphere was spot on also. Highly recommended for sure; great staff throughout as well - thank you"

"Words can't describe this hotel. I loved it here. Everything is perfect but the best thing about it is the staff. They treat you like family. I was so sad to leave and if it was possible I would like my ashes scattered here (lol)"

"Great hotel, very professional and friendly staff. Highlight was a private food tour organised through the hotel with Hidden Asian Travel Tours with the great guide, May and driver Shaan. Fantastic multicultural experience. May was so knowledgeable and really gave us a insight into KL culture and cuisine. Would highly recommend"

"I recently stayed at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur from 29 April to 1 May for a self-designed tennis and physical conditioning retreat (a weekend warrior and tennis enthusiast here). I had specifically chosen this hotel after reading about its tennis facilities, with the idea of seamlessly moving from training sessions to recovery—especially the cold bath, which was perfect for sore muscles. Overall, I was genuinely impressed by the hotel’s attention to detail, exceptional customer service, and the warmth of its hospitality. There is a clear culture of going above and beyond for guests, and it shows consistently across different aspects of the stay. 1) Tennis court I played both morning and night sessions. In the morning, the ideal window is between 8am and 11am, when both sides of the court are partially shaded; after that, the tropical heat becomes quite intense. At night, the lighting is excellent—bright and evenly distributed, with no harsh shadows affecting play (see photo). One observation: the court surface felt about 10% faster than a standard ITF-approved Laykold court. Service on the court was outstanding. Ice-cold water and fresh sports towels were always available. During a brief drizzle, staff even assisted in rolling the court dry. A particularly memorable moment was when I left my wet tennis shoes courtside to dry. Concerned they might be discarded, I informed the sports concierge. Not only did they keep an eye on them, but they also moved them under shelter when it started to drizzle. This level of attentiveness—even toward something as trivial as a guest’s shoes—speaks volumes. 2) Hospitality and Guest Relations I must commend the Guest Relations team. When booking, I had left a simple note: “Tennis lover here who chose MOKL for the tennis court—surprise me.” They exceeded expectations. The day before I was to play, I was greeted with thoughtful amenities: banana milkshakes, a chocolate cake, a Mandarin Oriental vacuum flask, and even a tennis-themed postcard. The level of personalization was impressive—it genuinely felt curated rather than generic. More broadly, hospitality here feels deeply ingrained. From the doorman who welcomed me at arrival, to the front desk and concierge staff, to the sports concierge who consistently topped up my flask with ice-cold water, and to the chefs at Lai Po Heen—everyone exuded warmth and sincerity. The atmosphere felt less like a hotel and more like being welcomed into someone’s home. 3) Food I had lunch at Lai Po Heen and explored their dim sum menu. Standout dishes included the Blue River Prawns Crispy Egg Noodles, Steamed Assorted Mushrooms with Bamboo Fungus, and Baked Cod Fish with Honey and Spinach. The prawn noodles initially came out slightly too salty for my taste. After I mentioned this, the young Chinese lady manager promptly replaced the dish. What impressed me was that she had personally tasted it and agreed with the feedback—demonstrating strong quality control. The replacement was excellent: balanced umami, rich prawn roe flavor, and wok hei in the noodles. Definitely a must-order. A delightful touch during service recovery was the dessert—mango agar shaped like little ducks. At first glance, they resembled rubber duckies you’d find in a bathtub, which gave me a good laugh. They were not just cute but also packed with rich mango flavor. 4) Rooms The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. Housekeeping service was provided twice daily. One small but telling detail stood out: I had left my charging cable in a messy tangle while charging my tablet. When I returned, it had been neatly bundled with a cable tie by housekeeping (see photo). It’s these thoughtful touches that elevate the experience. Final thoughts: This was a highly enjoyable and memorable stay, especially for someone building a trip around tennis and recovery. The facilities are excellent, but what truly sets this hotel apart is the people and their genuine care for guests. I would not hesitate to return. p.s planning my next trip to MO Costa Navarino, will be training at the Mouratoglou Tennis Center"
