PB hotel design editorial

Along Jalan Sultan Ismail, one of Kuala Lumpur's principal arteries, a 30-storey tower lit amber against the tropical dusk has anchored the city's luxury hotel landscape since 1984. The Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur was among the first international five-star addresses to establish itself in what was then a rapidly modernising capital, and the building's warm-toned facade and symmetrical fenestration — visible across the skyline in the exterior image — carry the assured weight of that era's hotel ambitions. Spread across 662 rooms and suites, the property sits within generous grounds that include one of the city centre's more convincingly landscaped pool terraces, where mature palms and dense tropical planting soften the surrounding residential towers into something closer to a garden enclave than a city-centre amenity. Inside, the interiors move across two distinct registers depending on which wing you find yourself in. The Valley Wing suites, renovated to a notably richer standard, favour gold-leaf headboard panels, crystal chandeliers, X-frame upholstered benches, and dark-stained timber nightstands that together suggest a restrained European classicism inflected with Asian decorative detail. The Garden Wing rooms take a warmer, more contemporary tack — curved ceilings, sienna-toned fabric wall panels behind buttoned leather headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city's mid-rise canopy. The Japanese restaurant Zipangu, with its slatted timber screens, textured resin wall panels behind the open kitchen, and low-slung maple chairs, delivers the sharpest interior moment in the building.

"Revisited Shangri-la KL again since our last stay in 2023. Generally happy with the spacious Horizon Executive Room and the city view from the room whereby we managed to see quite a lot of small fireworks due to the Hari Raya holidays. This period was ideal for us as the traffic and the crowd within city were lesser. Though the quality and the variety of food offering in the Club Lounge was pale in comparison to my last stay, the club lounge staff were generally polite and would like to commend Mandy and Skakir for their attentive and prompt service. The breakfast offering in the cafe is still as good and the service rendered by the staff was prompt and polite. We had enjoyed our short stay and will be back soon."

"Superb luxury hotel in great location. Room was stunning and spa and gym are top class. Air conditioner was a bit loud, this could be fixed. Staff were excellent and very helpful."

"Such lovely staff and service. Delicious breakfast where you couldn’t ask for more. Huge evening buffets. Helpful staff throughout the hotel who fell over backwards to make sure that you enjoyed your stay. Brilliant massage in the spa. Only drawback the hotel is a little tired and needs some tlc/investment. The spa is fab but the carpet is a little worn and rather unusually they play Mozart while you are being massaged rather than the more traditional ‘whale music’. Would definitely go back"

"It's a delight when you return to a hotel like the Shangri-la Kuala Lumpur to find the standards they have always had are maintained and even improved. I've been using this centrally located hotel in KL for nearly 20 years and it has remained a favourite of mine and my family. The location is excellent and within easy walking distance of the KLCC and 2 stops on the Monorail to Bukit Bintang, the Times Square of KL. The rooms are well appointed and I have noted many have been refurbished. Food that I have had at breakfast and other times (through the ground floor restaurant Lemon Garden and at the Horizon Club lounge) is of a high standard indeed. But the most important reason for my regular return is the staff. The moment you arrive, you are greeted by personnel outside the front door, in the lobby area and at check in. This friendly, warm reception extends throughout your stay. The service from the staff is top notch, wherever you are in the hotel. Finally, a special mention must go to the staff of the Horizon Club lounge. The lounge is exceptional for the afternoon tea and cocktail hours - I have compared this with other similar facilities at top hotels in Malaysia and this is still the one to beat. It is also an oasis of calm at other times in the day, away from the heat and bustle of KL. This visit I would like to mention and thank Ina, Tristan and Feez at the Horizon Club who really made me and my family feel most welcome. There is a new manager Noryati who I have met and I'm delighted she has directed the lounge to deliver the high standards that I have always known it to have. Well done Shangri-la and keep going."
