PB hotel design editorial

Along Jalan Sultan Ismail, one of Kuala Lumpur's principal arteries, a 30-storey tower lit amber against the tropical dusk has anchored the city's luxury hotel landscape since 1984. The Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur was among the first international five-star addresses to establish itself in what was then a rapidly modernising capital, and the building's warm-toned facade and symmetrical fenestration — visible across the skyline in the exterior image — carry the assured weight of that era's hotel ambitions. Spread across 662 rooms and suites, the property sits within generous grounds that include one of the city centre's more convincingly landscaped pool terraces, where mature palms and dense tropical planting soften the surrounding residential towers into something closer to a garden enclave than a city-centre amenity. Inside, the interiors move across two distinct registers depending on which wing you find yourself in. The Valley Wing suites, renovated to a notably richer standard, favour gold-leaf headboard panels, crystal chandeliers, X-frame upholstered benches, and dark-stained timber nightstands that together suggest a restrained European classicism inflected with Asian decorative detail. The Garden Wing rooms take a warmer, more contemporary tack — curved ceilings, sienna-toned fabric wall panels behind buttoned leather headboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the city's mid-rise canopy. The Japanese restaurant Zipangu, with its slatted timber screens, textured resin wall panels behind the open kitchen, and low-slung maple chairs, delivers the sharpest interior moment in the building.

"The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Sarimah at the reception greeted me with a warm smile and made the check-in process smooth and pleasant. My therapist, Esther, was professional, attentive, and made me feel completely relaxed throughout the treatment. The spa has a cozy, peaceful atmosphere, and every detail is designed to help you unwind. The service was exceptional, and I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I would definitely recommend this spa and can’t wait to come back!"

"This is my go to hotel for the almost last 20 years. Needless to say that there’s something about it. The atmosphere here and staff is extremely helpful all times, the hotel is clean, rooms are amazing, kids activities… I could keep on going. The hotel is located close to big shopping centres and there is a complementary shuttle that can take you. We also had access to the Horizon club lounge where it is a bit more quiet. One person that stands out is Ina in the lounge. She has been there for a long time and practically watched our daughter grow up. She is so sweet and kind hearted- and it is also nice to see a familiar face. Hand down- I have nothing bad to say about this place. It has all you desire, and more."

"Let me Start by saying we stayed at the shangri la in kota kinabalu and loved our stay there...and it took a long time to decide to write this review...we were in KL last October and wanted to look at some different hotels for our next stay...we visited three 5 star hotels all of which were very welcoming...the guest relation manager showed us around the facilities and the rooms...we decided to look at shangri la because of the reputation...welcomed by door staff asked to speak with duty or guest manager...when she arrived we explained the reason for our visit. "Just look at website" was the response...asked to look at the rooms.. told photos on website...we just left and booked the westin....not the customer service I was expecting at shangri la"
