PB hotel design editorial

Copper is not a material that forgives indecision — it demands commitment, and at The RuMa Hotel and Residences in Kuala Lumpur's KLCC district, it becomes the building's defining gesture. The burnished ceiling panels visible across the porte-cochère and lobby bar glow with a warmth that shifts from amber to deep ochre depending on the hour, anchoring an interior language developed by New York and Singapore-based studio BAMO that draws on Malay craft traditions — rattan weaving patterns pressed into screens and wall cladding, carved lattice grilles backlit to cast diamond shadows — without ever drifting into pastiche. Opened in 2018 within a 33-storey tower designed by Malaysian architect Hijjas Kasturi Associates, the 253-key property sets its 182 hotel rooms and 71 residences behind floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Petronas Towers with the directness of a picture hung deliberately crooked. The guestrooms carry the same dark walnut floors and woven-panel headboards across every category, cane-back chairs and pendant cage lanterns maintaining a domestic register that resists the usual urban-hotel impulse toward minimalism. At the pool deck, a green-mosaic infinity edge runs against the city skyline while woven rattan pod chairs and mature tropical plantings — schefflera pushing through raised stone beds — give the terrace the feeling of a private garden suspended several floors above Jalan Kia Peng. The lobby lounge, with its curved copper ceiling vault and custom pendant lights shaped like abstracted torch finials, consolidates everything the property argues: that contemporary Malaysian hospitality has its own material grammar, and that grammar is worth speaking precisely.

"The RuMa Hotel and Residences, thank you for the lovely and cosy stay. True to its name, inspired by the Malay word “rumah”, The RuMa really made us feel at home. My friends and I loved the comfortable room and all the thoughtful details provided. The housekeeping staff were also very polite and made us feel comfortable throughout our stay. We also had a wonderful experience at ATAS (sunday brunch buffet). The food was absolutely delicious, especially UNDER THE LIGHT – MIBRASA, the desserts, salad counter, and the cook to order service at the table. Special thanks to Bell, Aqirah, Dewi & Luna for the warm hospitality and for making our experience so memorable."

"Excellent hotel that prioritizes service, comfort and warmth over luxury and grandeur. Great location and a short stroll to the famous PETRONAS Twin Towers."

"We celebrated our 15th anniversary with a staycation in RuMa Hotel and we were greeted with chocolates and rose petals in the room upon check-in. Before arrival, there was an email inquiring about our preferences on pillow types, room location, etc and the room was prepared according to our request. Happy to inform that the bed, pillows and blanket were super comfy -- which really exudes a luxury feeling. Since we planned to stay-in most of the time reading books and having intentional conversations, glad to say that the ambience of the room perfectly accommodated our agenda. The table in the room was a good size (we could place a laptop and a notebook for writing comfortably) and was placed to allow for face-to-face conversation -- which was to me, a plus point. We also spent time together at the gym, went at 10pm when there was no crowd -- love that the gym was open for 24 hours. All equipment in the gym was from Technogym which again, elevates the luxury atmosphere. Breakfast spread at ATAS restaurant was astounding -- we would definitely come again with our families to enjoy the breakfast together :)"

"The RuMa Hotel in Kuala Lumpur is a remarkable blend of serenity, elegance, and luxury. The rooms feel incredibly pure and calming, with a minimalist Japanese-inspired aesthetic softened by warm Spanish touches and natural materials. Every detail is refined without ever feeling excessive, creating an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply relaxing. The breakfast is exceptional, combining high-quality international options with beautifully executed local Malaysian dishes. Service throughout the hotel is discreet, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. A special Thanks to Joshua the. Concierge of the hotel and his colleagues who have been able to give us many tips on the city. Its infinity pool and common spaces offer a peaceful escape from the energy of the city. The location is also ideal — perfectly positioned near KLCC and the Petronas Towers while remaining quiet and intimate. Unlike many large luxury hotels, RuMa has a true personality and sense of place. It feels less like a hotel and more like a beautifully designed urban sanctuary. A superb address for travelers seeking refined luxury with character."
