PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the limestone karst formations of Tanjung Rhu, where the northern tip of Langkawi dissolves into the Andaman Sea, a low-slung village of dark timber pavilions arranged around a sequence of linked pools and water gardens establishes the Four Seasons Langkawi as one of the more architecturally grounded resort properties in Southeast Asia. Designed by the Malaysian architect Carlos Ott's office in collaboration with local vernacular traditions, the resort draws its structural logic from the Malay kampung house — deep-pitched roofs over exposed hardwood frames, broad verandahs shading full-height glazed openings, the buildings held close to the ground rather than elevated into the landscape. The interiors work a careful balance between regional craft and contemporary restraint. Woven bamboo wall panels, polished hardwood floors, and pitched ceilings with exposed beam work carry through the villas, while the soft furnishings introduce indigo blues and warm ambers drawn from batik and ikat traditions. Pendant lanterns and open-weave room dividers give the bar and dining pavilions the atmosphere of a well-worn colonial trading house — Persian rugs on dark tile floors, rattan chairs alongside leather bar stools, encaustic cement tile facing the counter. The pool terrace, framed by frangipani and royal palms with the karst cliff rising behind, organises the resort's forty-eight villas and pavilions into a landscape that manages to feel genuinely rooted in place rather than assembled from the standard vocabulary of tropical luxury.

"What a place — a true escape from the beaten track. An unforgettable experience from the very first moment. As we entered our villa, a family of monkeys greeted us, offering the most unexpected and delightful welcome."

"We had our wedding at Four Seasons Resort Langkawi and honestly it could not have gone better. Nicky Koh and Chew Ying were so kind and amazing the entire way through. Super easy to work with Nicky, always on top of things, and she made the whole process feel smooth. Planning a wedding from far away could have been stressful but they made it feel easy. What stood out the most was the entire staff. From the chefs to the porters, you could tell people genuinely cared. It never felt scripted or forced, just real hospitality. Every interaction felt warm and natural. The wedding itself was flawless. The food was delicious, the timing was perfect, and everything just worked. Nothing felt off and nothing felt rushed, which is rare for something like this. We have been to a lot of nice places but this place was perfection. Really grateful to the whole team and will forever be a Four Seasons guest."

"The four seasons Langkawi is truly one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed. Everywhere you turn on the resort looks like a postcard. Our villa was gorgeous, huge and spacious, extremely comfortable beds and block out curtains (a must when you’re traveling with kids!). The resort is very family friendly and my daughters loved the kids club. On arrival my daughters were given travel bags with toy monkeys inside which was a really nice touch. The spa here is not to be missed, I had a fantastic massage. The monkeys on the property were definitely a highlight. The only down side is if you are wanting to swim in the ocean there are jellyfish, so we stuck with the pool. Overall a wonderful family holiday, and a very beautiful well-run resort."

"Dramatic scenery, gorgeous pools… a perfect retreat   We loved our stay. Our holiday here was the last stop on a trip which started in Singapore with the F1 Grand Prix after which we moved on to Kuala Lumpur then to Penang and finished up here for R and R, peace and quiet… which is exactly what we got. I can't help comparing this to other Four Seasons properties which can often be fabulous but this is clearly one of the best places to stay in Malaysia. What it lacks in ultraluxury it more than makes up for by the sheer beauty of the entire, clearly 5-star property. We were driven everywhere around the resort by golf cart, it felt very private… the scenery was glorious. We had a large two-bedroom Beach villa with a pool, extremely spacious, exceptionally well located.   The swimming pools were absolutely extraordinary, amongst the best ever… my photographs don't do it justice, you have to be there to appreciate such indulgent, extravagantly crafted, amazing pools.   We used the spa…a lovely facility. The food and restaurants were lovely bearing in mind we wete on an island in Malaysia as opposed to the Four Seasons in the South of France...completely different but different is good, that is what we wanted. All three restaurants well most enjoyable as were the breakfasts. The hotel dealt with my wife’s allergies perfectly Which is always greatly appreciated.    We particularly loved the bar by the beach at night... such an excellent spot, great cocktails, fabulous atmosphere...a totally unbeatable facility to enjoy the sun setting. Special thanks to Aom (Naipaporn) who is a star.   Our daughter was with us and she loved her 1st floor garden view King Suite although she spent much of her time sitting by our beach villa pool.   Lovely accommodation, highly recommended, just bear in mind that you are on an Island in Malaysia where they do things differently than in top American resorts and be open-minded... this is Malaysian island life at its best."
