PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a granite-studded headland at Pantai Kok, where the rainforest presses down to meet the Andaman Sea, The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi was designed around a single governing idea: that a luxury resort should feel like it grew from its site rather than was imposed upon it. Opened in 2015 across roughly 77 villas and rooms, the property draws its architectural language from traditional Malay kampung vernacular — steep pitched roofs, darkened timber post-and-beam construction, carved geometric screens — and scales it into something that carries genuine grandeur. The arrival pavilion, visible in the images, makes the ambition plain: a procession of repeated timber trusses, charred almost black, marching toward an open frame of sea and sky, the granite boulders left in place below as though the structure simply grew around them. The interiors, developed with a regionalist palette that avoids the generic pan-Asian resort idiom, move between two registers. Forest villas use deep-toned hardwoods, patterned sliding screens with traditional Malay motifs, and plunge pools carved into the jungle canopy — the bedroom walls dissolving almost entirely into the tree line. Overwater pavilions take a lighter tone, with slatted timber ceilings, woven grass-cloth wall panels, and wide folding glass walls that frame the turquoise Strait of Malacca. The restaurant picks up the decorative density, copper-toned pierced screens stacked to double height above a parquet floor, lantern light warming the whole room against the darkening horizon beyond.

"We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi as a family, and it ended up being one of the best hotel experiences we’ve ever had. What really made the difference was the pre-arrival planning. Months before our stay, I was in touch with Brena from the resort to make the trip special for my wife and son. They went above and beyond, arranging a custom arrival experience for our son with Paw Patrol and Hot Wheels themed gifts waiting for him. It set the tone immediately. We stayed in a beach access villa with a private pool, which was fantastic. It was private, spacious, and just steps from the beach. Service throughout the stay was excellent, especially from our butler Shuk, who was consistently helpful and responsive without ever being intrusive. A few highlights from the stay: • We often ordered room service for lunch between activities. It was consistently delicious and reasonably priced, with strong kids’ menu options • The unpacking service sounded unnecessary at first but turned out to be a great touch after a long journey • The setting is incredible. You are completely immersed in nature. We had monkeys right outside our villa in the mornings, saw hornbills, and were constantly surrounded by jungle • My wife had the Mystical Ocean treatment at the spa, which she loved • Dinner at the Beach Grill with fresh fish was a standout For families, this place really works: • The kids club is excellent and has more of an educational focus than a typical playroom • Our son loved the treasure hunt on the last day • We also did sea kayaking, which was included and a great experience The villa itself was outstanding. The bed was the most comfortable I have ever had in a hotel. There was a proper dining table area and a separate living room space, and we had a great view over our private pool out to the sea. There was also a very nice cocktail event where guests could meet the management team. The General Manager shared that the resort plans to expand in the future with additional villas and a water park for kids. We would absolutely come back when that happens. My only hope is that any expansion preserves the serene, nature-first setting that makes this property so special. That sense of being immersed in the jungle really sets it apart from the more overdeveloped feel you sometimes get at resorts of this kind. A tip for future guests: make sure you understand the activities offered by the hotel early in your stay. Some are included depending on your package, but they run at specific times and require advance reservations. A bit of planning goes a long way and helps you avoid missing out on experiences. There is a jungle trek and a forest/sea advanture along with some more relaxing nature walks around the grounds. We didn’t end up getting to do the activities we wanted because we waited too long to arrange. Overall, between the setting, the thoughtful service, and the effort the team put into personalizing our stay, this is easily one of the best hotels we have experienced. My wife and son both agreed it is the best we have stayed in."

"My stay at The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, every detail was thoughtfully curated to create a truly unforgettable experience. A special thank you to my butler, Aidil, who went above and beyond in every way. His attentiveness, warmth, and ability to anticipate my needs made me feel genuinely cared for throughout my stay. This level of personalized service is rare and deeply appreciated. The housekeeping team also deserves recognition for their impeccable work—my villa was always spotless, refreshed, and welcoming, adding to the overall comfort and luxury of the experience. The property itself is absolutely breathtaking, blending natural beauty with elegance and tranquility. Every moment felt peaceful, indulgent, and well worth it. I would return without hesitation. Truly a world-class experience."

"Almost a week in paradise Langkawi. It definitely wasn’t enough time at the amazing Ritz Carlton. The villa we stayed in was absolutely top class and the people were wonderful. I cannot give enough thanks to the team, Syasya from the butler team immediately created a group chat for ease of communication, which made everything seamless. E.g buggies to and from beach, breakfast, restaurant, reception. Syasya even organised a car for us to take outside of the resort with great ease. The in-villa barbecue experience was the best EVER. Menu 2 had some of the best seafood I had ever had, especially the ceviche. The chef’s were personable and very talented. Haifa at breakfast was lovely, warm and welcoming every morning! Sufyan- thank you for organising the cendol an amazing cultural experience. Nauful at the Chinese restaurant is very knowledgeable and recommended the BEST food and wine. The beach is also divine!!!! Many, many thanks again. This is an experience we won’t forget. And hope to experience again!"

"After exploring the vibrant street food of Malaysia, we decided to have lunch at the Ritz-Carlton in Langkawi, and it was a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, the views were magnificent, and the lounge area was beautiful and relaxing. What made the experience even more special was the exceptional service. Jennie stood out with her outstanding customer service skills—she was attentive, warm, and genuinely pleasant. Her thoughtful service added so much joy to our luncheon. We truly appreciated her hospitality and look forward to visiting again."
