PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against a private stretch of Andaman Sea shoreline on Malaysia's Langkawi archipelago, with primary rainforest rising directly behind and the cable car lines of Gunung Mat Cincang visible from upper-floor balconies, The St. Regis Langkawi was designed to hold two competing ambitions in tension: the colonial Moorish grandeur of its white stucco facades and arched loggias, and the raw equatorial landscape that surrounds it on every side. The low-rise main building — its massing stepped back from the beach behind a line of palms — gives way to overwater villas that extend directly above the Straits of Malacca, their teak decking and plunge pools cantilevered above water of an improbable turquoise. The 90-key property opened in 2015, with interiors by the Hong Kong studio HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates working a palette that moves between champagne, slate grey, and deep teal. Guest rooms in the main building carry dark-stained hardwood floors, embossed headboard panels in pale gold fabric, and pendant lanterns with pierced brass detailing — a restrained interpretation of regional craft rather than a literal quotation of it. The overwater villas shift register entirely, their white-beamed ceilings and flood of Andaman light giving them an almost Mediterranean clarity. The signature restaurant is among the property's most resolved spaces: a shell chandelier cascading above tables furnished with carved Malay-influenced armchairs upholstered in cowhide, the entire room opened to the sea through tall French doors, the surrounding islands framed like a composition rather than a backdrop.

"It’s very beautiful property, staff is super friendly, polite and knowledgeable. Overall service is very good. Food is amazing at the beach restaurant and KayuPuti. Buffet dinners are a bit limited. The bar design is a real art, most beautiful bar I’ve ever seen. One major con is bedsheets. We stayed in hotel twice, I asked to change bedsheets few times and each time they were dirty, grey and don’t smell fresh. The feeling like you sleep in cheap hostel rather than in luxurious hotel. Towels some are nice and new, some are grey and tearing apart both in the room and at the pool. I mean St. Regis can do better. And one more thing. The curtains around pool at the private villa cover all the sun lights. And they cannot even be moved to the side. It’s dark and cold to use private pool. I totally understand that some guests appreciate privacy. But some, like us arrived to Langkawi to enjoy the sun. So general experience was very good, with some cons."

"I am currently staying at The St. Regis Langkawi, and this has been one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Stay away from this place — be warned. After writing this review, I have also separately reported the matter to the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism. I raised my concerns directly with the General Manager, Derek Gomez, but instead of improving, the problems continued and escalated. 1) Arrival ''drama'' I have a disability and a serious back problem, yet I had to carry my own luggage from the taxi to check-in because the bell staff were occupied on their personal phones. 2) Pool bar ''mess'' I ordered a basic frozen non-alcoholic mocktail and waited around 25 minutes. When it arrived, it was melted and tasted weird wrong. 3) Champagne Hour ''fiasco'' They have a so-called “Champagne Hour” which starts at 6:30pm. I arrived at 6:33pm — yes, just three minutes after it began — and was told there were no glasses left, so I was not served. After waiting 10 minutes, I received less than a full glass because the champagne had run out. At the same time, I saw several members of management, including the Food & Beverage Manager, Ganesan, and other senior team members, enjoying champagne themselves — effectively funded by us - guests. Stay away from that ''Ganesan'': he does not help. He seems to enjoy his title, walking around like a ''sultan-king'' rather than resolving problems. I explain more about him below. 4) Beach Grill – ''disaster'' My 8:00pm reservation was not on the system. I was seated at a table covered in dirt and dust, with no cutlery or plates, and despite asking, the table was never cleaned. I asked for the manager: a rude man called “Bard” came over, looked at me without apologising, and walked away. Shortly afterwards, I heard him shouting at staff, which was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Minutes later, he returned to take my drink order. I made it very clear that alcohol upsets my stomach and ordered a non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiri. He brought it, but it was melted again. I asked for it to be made frozen. He took it back and brought a second one — but the second drink was clearly alcoholic. As soon as I drank it, I felt burning in my stomach. Bard is another person you should stay away from. Then Ganesan came to see me at Beach Grill and assured me my food would be fine. After he left, my ribeye steak arrived cold, and my truffle fries were served as normal fries with no truffle. Throughout all of this, the staff wore fake smiles — as if the smile was drawn on their faces, not coming from the heart. For a property that markets itself as a 5-star luxury hotel, these repeated “dangerous mistakes” — including serving alcohol after being explicitly told not to and continuing to address a guest disrespectfully — are not just unacceptable, they are horrifying and potentially dangerous. This is the kind of carelessness that can risk a guest’s health. And as for service standards: any McDonald’s is faster, cleaner, and more reliable."

"From the very first moment, this was the most remarkable hotel experience I have ever had. I arrived in the evening and was welcomed in an exceptionally warm and elegant manner. The check-in process is unlike anything you typically encounter: no reception desk, no waiting in line. Instead, you are invited to relax in a lounge, offered a welcome drink, and everything is handled discreetly in the background. One signature, and the butler personally escorts you to your suite. Thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Gold status, I received a suite upgrade — and it exceeded every expectation. The size, design, layout, bathroom, and balcony are all outstanding, with every detail thoughtfully considered. The sea view from Suite 220 is simply stunning. The service throughout the resort is exemplary. The team is attentive, professional, and genuinely personal. A special mention goes to the Bard (bar supervisor), who remembered both my name and my preferred drink from the previous evening — a level of attention I have never experienced before. Each evening at 6:30 pm, the resort hosts a champagne ritual to welcome the night. It is calm, elegant, and perfectly aligned with the refined atmosphere of the property. The facilities are equally impressive. The gym is open 24/7, well equipped, and thoughtfully stocked. The 25-meter pool is ideal for swimming, peaceful, and never crowded. The entire resort is immaculate, quiet, and beautifully maintained, with a serene beach offering plenty of space and privacy. Dining is excellent across the resort, and the hotel bar provides a relaxed ambiance with live music in the evenings. What stood out most, however, was the silence — I measured around 30 dB in my suite at night, resulting in truly perfect sleep. The butler service via WhatsApp is seamless and efficient. While the resort is secluded, the livelier parts of the island are easily reachable within 20 minutes — though once you arrive, you won’t feel the urge to leave. A truly outstanding resort that sets a new benchmark for luxury hospitality."
