PB hotel design editorial

Soo K. Chan grew up inside the Khoo Kongsi clan compound in George Town, Penang — so when SCDA Architects was commissioned to convert a cluster of early twentieth-century Straits Chinese shophouses into Soori Penang, the project carried a weight of personal memory that most hotel commissions never approach. Chan returned each of the fifteen suites to a single-dwelling configuration, stripping away decades of subdivision to reveal the spatial logic the shophouses were built around: deep narrow plans drawing light through airwells, original timber roof beams left exposed overhead, and tiled courtyards that now hold small reflection pools flanked by antique stone guardian lions. The result sits within George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site with an authority that comes from genuinely understanding what was already there. The interiors move in a different direction from the shophouse facades — those white-plastered elevations with dark-painted louvered shutters and gilt Chinese signage belong entirely to the Peranakan mercantile tradition — but the shift inside feels earned rather than jarring. Rooms are finished in pale oak panelling, woven cane headboard inserts lit from behind, and floor-to-ceiling ribbed fabric screens that soften natural light filtering through restored shutters. The bar pulls the original blackened timber beams into a darker atmosphere altogether: cement-troweled walls, slate-tiled floors, a curved marble counter, and banquette seating in grey leather. The two worlds — heritage shell and spare contemporary interior — are held together by Chan's precision with material weight and his evident familiarity with exactly what he was working inside.

"The architecture and building finishes were beautiful and preserved the local cultural integrity.the rooms are the traditional style townhouses with wonderful modern amenities.so spacious and unbelievably wonderful with a sitting room and a reflecting pool.we had breakfast everyday (10 out of 10) and two lunches(also a 10 out of 10).I was returning after an absence of 60 years and was talking to June(staff member)recounting a sweet sour treat that I remembered loving as a child.June said she thought the treat i described might be a sour plum.later that day she brought me some .She continued to pamper and guide us during our stay.shes fantastic! Hassan was also incredibly helpful .he greeted us at the airport upon arrival and continued to check on us during our stay. Also a shout out to their spa and masseuse .i can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Georgetown .The posted star rating is inaccurate ,this is a five star plus property with out a doubt!"

"Perfectly located in the middle of UNESCO district. Room immaculately designed with a blend of Scandinavian minimalist and Chinese fenshui style. Staff is friendly and helpful. I wish we stayed longer. It is far more luxurious than the star system indicates."

"My partner and I almost booked somewhere else and I'm glad we didn't. Soori Penang is located right in the middle of George Town's heritage zone, beside Khoo Kongsi temple, with easy access to Armenian Street, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and some of the best street food in the city, all within walking distance. The hotel is stunning - high ceilings, airwells (a typical design feature of the original shophouses), and lots of original details still intact. The staff were among some of the best we've come across. Helpful and full of useful local recommendations rather than the usual tourist-routine suggestions. For a couple looking to explore George Town properly, this is the right base."
