PB hotel design editorial

A cream-painted Baroque Revival mansion on Penang's Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah — the grand colonial boulevard once known as Millionaires' Row — provides The Edison George Town with an architectural pedigree that no amount of contemporary hotel design could manufacture. The two-storey facade, with its pedimented centrepiece, pilastered arches, and sage-green louvred shutters, belongs to the tradition of late-nineteenth-century mercantile grandeur that made George Town's UNESCO-listed historic core one of Southeast Asia's most architecturally layered cities. A polychrome figurative fountain anchors the motor court, its imagery drawn from the same European decorative vocabulary as the building behind it. Inside, the interiors navigate the familiar tension between colonial heritage and contemporary comfort with considerable deftness — dark-stained timber floors, slat-panel headboards, and navy velvet armchairs keeping company with exposed brick feature walls and ebonised four-poster frames in the upper-category rooms. The palette runs to teal, indigo, and warm stone, grounded by Venetian-blind light filtering through jalousie windows. A rear courtyard restaurant lined with decorative concrete breeze-block screens — a mid-century Malayan motif used here with quiet confidence — opens beneath a louvred pergola to the garden, where a narrow lap pool flanked by frangipani trees and teak sun decks with black-and-white striped loungers extends along the rear wing. The whole property carries the atmosphere of a well-restored private residence rather than a converted public building.

"My stay at The Edison in George Town, Penang was nothing short of first-class all the way. What began as a 10-day stay turned into three-weeks due to the sudden escalation of the war in Iran. During what could have been a very stressful and uncertain time, the team at The Edison stepped in with extraordinary kindness and professionalism. I was there for a workshop, and the team never missed a beat. We were shown personable hospitality for our meetings, meals, and pretty much anything else we needed (usually before we even knew we needed it!). The property itself is breathtaking. The Edison is a beautifully restored heritage mansion, and it’s easy to see why people frequently stop outside just to photograph it. You are within an enchanting 10-minute walk to anything and everything you could possibly want or need. I would return and recommend without hesitation."

"We had a wonderful 5 night stay at the Edison and would highly recommend this hotel. It is a beautiful, historic mansion in a fantastic location for exploring George Town. The staff were all incredibly helpful and friendly with a special thank you to Albert for all his restaurant suggestions and assistance making reservations. The breakfast and happy hour drink brought guests together and added to the enjoyment of our stay."

"Absolutely love our return visits to this very special small luxury hotel. It is especially warm and homely due to the great quality staff, some there years. Breakfast is to order, and the communal kitchen a real treat during the day. The outside seating is simply gorgeous and tasteful. I often curl up and read in a corner. The pool very refreshing, if a little shaded. Love it when Edi the owner and Nina come join us for a drink and a chat. It’s evening wine flight is a lovely way to meet and thank guests before we head out to dinner across the road. If you truly want to experience culture, then head over to the Red food court. So much fresh food to chose from. We keep returning to this oasis of tranquility in the heart of Georgetown. Albert is a gem who can organise anything for you. We even got our new glasses locally on his advice. Back again in a year or so. Thank you, from Paula and Steve"

"Experiencing the charm of Georgetown, Penang, started with The Edison. This heritage building is steeped in a rather colourful history, made alive again in the wine hours with Lingesh and Albert (don’t miss this). Mr Eddie Tan, whom we had the pleasure of sharing an evening with, and his team have not only restored this impressive old building but given it a modern sheen rooted in the past. It’s easy to make friends with fellow travellers around the large center table in the dining area or be by yourself in the cabanas. There’s even a pantry stocked with Malay favourites open at all times and the staff (special shout out to Aaron and Andrew) is always happy to help you. Every time we came back from trips around the town, we were greeted with smiles, followed by chats on how our day went. There is a homely feel to The Edison. While Albert walked us through a map of Georgetown and led us to one of our most memorable meals at the Lagenda on Day 1, Lingesh was a phone call away when we wanted dining recommendations on subsequent days. One thing that stood out for us is the scale of the restoration with attention to detail, including the choice of furnishings and colour scheme. Thank you team The Edison. See you again! --Mridula and Prabhdev Singh"

"Great location only a 10 min walk into the old town. Beautiful building and the rooms was spacious with nice products in the bathroom. The staff on reception and in the lounge were fantastic. Friendly, informative and couldn’t do enough to help. Free snacks and drinks in the lounge was a an added surprise. Only negative is the decking round the pool is dangerous and in need of replacement. I fell through some rotten wood luckily no harm done but could have been far worse."
