PB hotel design editorial

Raa Atoll sits at the northern edge of the Maldivian chain, far enough from Malé that the seaplane ride alone signals a genuine departure from the ordinary. Alila Kothaifaru Maldives arrived here in 2022, shaped entirely by Singapore-based Studiogoto, who handled both architecture and interiors — a rare unified authorship that shows. Rather than clearing the island to build upon it, Studiogoto worked around the existing vegetation, conserving up to seventy percent of native planting and threading the resort's eighty villas through the landscape as though they had always been there. From the air, the thirty-six overwater villas extend in a loose formation across the lagoon, their pale concrete volumes low and horizontal, each one lifted on timber piles above water that shifts between jade and cobalt depending on the hour. Inside, the language stays consistent and calm: wide-plank timber floors, slatted wood headboard screens that filter light without blocking it, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that dissolves the boundary between bed and ocean. The furniture — low-slung sofas in warm linen, round oak side tables, armchairs with simple joinery — draws from Japanese minimalism without leaning into pastiche. The dining pavilion carries the same sensibility: teak screens folded back to the horizon, pendant ceiling grids in woven material, and a long stone counter that anchors the space without competing with the view beyond. Forty-four beachfront villas complete the offering, each with a private pool set against white sand and a palm canopy that Studiogoto had the restraint to leave largely intact.

"We stayed at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives and had a truly wonderful experience overall. From the moment we arrived, everything felt smooth and well organized. The check-in process was incredibly fast and efficient, probably one of the quickest we have ever experienced, and perfectly suited to the relaxed atmosphere of a private island, where everything is handled with simplicity and professionalism. The island itself is not very large, but it is well maintained and thoughtfully designed. The common areas are particularly impressive, with a level of style and architecture that stands out even by Maldivian standards. We noticed that the beaches vary slightly from one side of the island to the other, likely depending on the season. During our stay in December, the best beach conditions were on the side where the seaplane jetty is located, where the sea was calmer and the sand cleaner. That said, the beach in front of our villa was still beautiful and very enjoyable. Our villa was impeccable, extremely clean, well designed, and very comfortable, with direct access to the beach. Each villa has its own private pool, which was always perfectly maintained and a real highlight of the stay. The interiors were tastefully furnished, and the bathroom was particularly impressive: an outdoor space surrounded by tropical greenery with a modern and elegant design. Overall, we found the villas absolutely beautiful. The only minor point was that our villa had slightly less vegetation than some of the others we noticed around the island, which meant less natural shade during the day, but this did not significantly affect our stay. Dining experiences were generally positive. We tried the main restaurant and bar, which offered a reasonable variety of dishes. The quality was consistently good, but we felt that prices were somewhat high compared to what was offered. While we understand the level of the resort and the location in the Maldives, the pricing for food felt slightly disproportionate and could benefit from some adjustment. We also visited the Japanese restaurant, which offered good quality food in an intimate and elegant setting that we found very enjoyable. Also the Yakitori bar deserves a special mention: although the food selection is more limited, the location and atmosphere are simply outstanding. Sitting by the sea creates a truly special experience, easily one of the most beautiful bar settings we have ever seen. Breakfast was another highlight, with a well-organized and varied selection and consistently high quality. Service throughout the resort was excellent. The staff were extremely professional, friendly, and welcoming at all times. Our personal butler, Syn, provided outstanding assistance via WhatsApp, always responding quickly and efficiently to our requests. This level of communication made the stay particularly smooth and comfortable. During our stay we experienced a significant mosquito presence, which made the outdoor areas of the villa more difficult to use at times. However, the hotel made a genuine effort to address the issue and assisted us in the best possible way, which we greatly appreciated. Overall, we found very few negative aspects. It was an excellent stay that we would happily recommend. A special thank you to Zachery, Selli, Aroo and Ahthu for the kindness, availability, and outstanding professionalism shown during our stay."

"This was truly a once in lifetime experience for my wife and I. Syn was an amazing villa host who made sure our trip would be the most memorable. Sandip and his daily drink concoctions made sure my glass was never empty and my wife’s wine was always topped off. A truly memorable experience made by the staff. The breakfast was a plethora of delicious, and Aroo made sure I had my fresh squeezed orange juice without being prompted. I truly appreciate the staffs dedication to meet the needs of not only me and my wife but of all the guests. We left our 18 month old at home for the first time with our parents and seeing the staff interact with all the kids made us miss not having him there. Great staff, top notch."
