PB hotel design editorial
Drawn from the same coral-fringed sandbank that gave ancient Maldivian dhoni builders their timber, Cocoa Island was reimagined by Christina Ong's COMO Hotels as a direct homage to the traditional fishing vessel — each of its 33 overwater villas built in the silhouette of a dhoni hull, their dark-thatched roofs arcing low over the lagoon in South Malé Atoll. The concept, developed with Singapore-based designers working closely to COMO's characteristic restraint, makes the property one of the few in the Maldives where the architectural conceit has genuine cultural grounding rather than generic tropical pastiche. The interiors carry that same discipline. White-painted shiplap walls and steeply pitched woven-rattan ceilings give the villas a compressed, boat-like intimacy, while dark hardwood floors and charcoal-lacquered furniture — low platform beds, clean-lined credenzas with circular rattan mirrors — keep the palette anchored without competing with the turquoise lagoon framed beyond navy-painted bifold doors. The contrast between the deep indigo joinery and the bleached-white structural frame is a detail that recurs across the property, appearing again in the main restaurant, where woven rattan pendant lanterns hang over teak tables paired with rope-and-timber chairs upholstered in navy cushions, the whole room sitting on a striped teak deck that echoes the dhoni's timber planking. The central pool pavilion, set on white sand and shaded by mature takamaka trees, completes a resort that has kept its original idea intact.

About
COMO Cocoa Island has reopened on the 9th of January 2020 following a seven-month refurbishment. COMO Cocoa Island is home to 33-overwater villas inspired by local Dhoni boats, the accommodations have been recast top-to-bottom with clean-lined contemporary interiors created by Singapore-based Lekker Architects. The resort also gained an open-sided Pilates and yoga studio, which sits in an elevated position above the lagoon offering 360-degree views. A thrid of the private Island is occupied by the COMO Shambhala Retreat, the island's wellness centre, which offers Asian-based wellness therapies, nutritional advise and exercise in the resort's state-of-the-art new gym. A highlight is the hydrotherapy pool with high-pressure jets used for water-based treatments. COMO Cocoa Island Reviews
"Last week, my wife and I finally enjoyed our long-awaited honeymoon at Como Cocoa, and it exceeded every expectation. From the impeccable service to the stunning house reef, everything was truly exceptional. Snorkeling right off the water villa was unforgettable—we saw an incredible variety of marine life, including turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and even dolphins. The food was outstanding, with both breakfast and dinner consistently excellent—the chef deserves special recognition. The spa and gym facilities were equally impressive, adding another layer of relaxation to our stay. We also greatly appreciated the complimentary early check-in and late check-out, which effectively gave us an extra full day to enjoy this special trip. What truly sets this resort apart, however, is the people. The entire team made us feel genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived until the very end of our stay. Their warmth and attention to detail made our honeymoon unforgettable—we couldn’t have chosen a better place. The only minor drawback was some nearby construction and heavy boat traffic at certain times of the day; however, neither detracted from our ability to fully relax and enjoy every moment of our stay. This is a truly special place, and we hope to return again someday. Thank you, Como Cocoa, for an unforgettable experience!"

"There are places you visit—and places that quietly become part of you. COMO Cocoa Island is the latter. There’s an ease here that’s hard to describe but impossible to miss. It’s not about scale or spectacle—it’s about feeling completely at home in a setting that just happens to be extraordinary. The Experience | Effortless, Personal, Real Arriving by speedboat from Malé (simple, seamless, and even a bit fun) sets the tone immediately—no long transfers, no disruption, just a gentle transition into island life. There’s a warmth to this place that goes beyond service. It’s in the way things are remembered, anticipated, and quietly delivered. A very special thank you to Binoy, an exceptional villa host, who remembered details from our stay over a year ago—something that still surprises and delights. That level of care stays with you. Whether that’s personal attentiveness or simply excellent organization behind the scenes, it creates a feeling that is rare. Over time, this place starts to feel less like a stay—and more like a return. The Villas | Horizon, Light, and Quiet Magic The overwater villas feel beautifully integrated into their surroundings—never overdone. We have a favorite 😉—chosen for its extended horizon and sense of openness. Some villas offer slightly different perspectives, and that nuance matters. Not all overwater villas include a dedicated villa host—worth considering, as that added layer of care subtly elevates the experience. The lagoon is simply stunning—particularly in the evening. Walking out along the dhoni-style villas, with their soft curves and quiet lines, there’s a stillness that’s hard to describe but easy to feel. It’s one of the most beautiful settings in the Maldives. With just over 30 overwater villas, the scale remains intentionally intimate—and you feel it. There’s a natural sense of space and ease here. The rhythm becomes your own: Do you snorkel before breakfast… or after? The House Reef | The Heart of It All This is where Cocoa Island quietly sets itself apart. The house reef is exceptional—and evolving. Both COMO properties are actively engaged in coral regeneration, and it shows. Even over the past 14 months, there’s been noticeable growth and change. Their marine biologist-led talks (complimentary and well worth attending) offer deeper insight into this ongoing work. You can slip straight into the water from your villa and be immersed within moments. There’s a "reef wall" (all natural), where you can simply float, arms out, suspended between light and depth. On the right day, the current carries you in an effortless drift snorkel—one of those experiences you don’t plan, but remember. Reef sharks, rays—and on this visit, octopus mating… not once, but twice. It’s no surprise divers travel from around the world to COMO’s Maldives properties. The Atmosphere | A Place People Return To There’s something telling about the number of repeat guests here. We met people returning for their 20th… even 40th visit. That doesn’t happen by chance. There’s nothing to prove here. No pressure to “do.” You simply ease into the rhythm—sometimes realizing hours later you’ve been in the water, or simply being. It’s a place where luxury feels understood, not performed. The Food | Thoughtful, Diverse, and Surprisingly Abundant While there is one main restaurant, it never feels limiting. The culinary team brings together influences from around the world, creating a menu that is varied, evolving, and consistently excellent. As someone who leans plant-based, this is a place that genuinely delivers—without effort or compromise. A special mention as well to Federico, the Italian head chef, whose warmth and creativity bring a beautiful energy to the dining experience—another example of how personal it all feels here. Half board works beautifully here, with the flexibility to add as you go. And small details—like sourcing a favorite fruit that’s not always easy to find—don’t go unnoticed. Wellness | COMO Shambhala at Its Best The COMO Shambhala experience here is exceptional—quietly transformative. There’s a rhythm to it: yoga often twice daily, thoughtful wellness offerings, and the flexibility to engage as much—or as little—as you want. Scheduling feels easy and natural, not rushed or competitive. A special mention to Matteo, whose understanding of the body and movement goes beyond technique—it’s intuitive, and genuinely impactful. COMO’s approach of bringing in specialists adds another layer to an already strong spa program. It’s wellness that integrates into your stay, rather than standing apart from it. Details & More From thoughtful seasonal touches, to daily replenishments, to the quiet attentiveness of the team—Arta, Wasim, and the entire team—there’s a consistency that builds trust. You feel looked after, but never managed. If your schedule allows, pairing Cocoa Island with its sister property, COMO Maalifushi, offers a beautifully complementary experience—one more expansive and remote, the other more intimate and immediate. Together, they create a fuller picture of what the Maldives can be. There’s a question that quietly defines your days here: Do you snorkel before breakfast… or after? And somewhere along the way, you realize you’ve mastered something unexpected— not the art of doing, but the art of being."

"This is my 2nd trip to COMO Cocoa Island and it's been amazing again. From resort manager, all the managers and the crew from F&B, Marine Centre, Shambala (servers, therapists, cleaners etc) made my stay special and warm. Service and food great quality. Villa was clean, cozy with amazing sea view. I did private guided snorkelling session with Shimmi and swam with nurse sharks, dolphins and sea turtles. I created wonderful memories during my short stay with beautiful photos and videos from the sea adventures 🥰 special thanks - may hv missed some names - Thani, Hindro, Phoo, Max, Shimmi and many more. See you all next year!"

"We had a fabulous time, cocoa island felt like it was a private island even with other guests, the pockets of privacy surrounded the place with the friendliest people working there. The rooms were minimalist with the comfiest bed and pillows. Breakfast was fantastic, all the food was a step above any Maldives stay I’ve had before, the homemade pasta and the curries were delicious. The soufflés were perfection. Phoo was a delight each morning and Anura in the restaurant always. Hindra was charming and so many more but we did reserve a big soft spot for Ravi. He was stand out, always going above and beyond and running the whole bar and beach area seamlessly and a really interesting person. Anan on reception was super helpful and Ibrahim guest relations manager and Arta the general manager were exemplary in their overseeing of the resort. It’s a beautiful place and you can do as little or as much as you want. The snorkelling was fantastic with three reefs all abundant with sea life, we were so lucky to spot and octopus one day amongst hundreds of beautiful 🐠. The hydropool was also a huge bonus. The shop selling the most amazing products was also hard to resist but at least we can still smell ‘Como’ on our return home. Magical we will be back!"

"We spent four wonderful days at Como Cocoa Island in March. Ms Jana greeted us warmly at the airport and whisked us to the speedboat. On board, Ms Arta introduced herself, greeted us by our names and we were pleasantly surprised as it was our first meeting. When we arrived on the island, the staff gave us a friendly welcome and a tour around. Our villa was spacious with a superb view. We managed a little snorkeling before dinner—a special mix of Western and Thai dishes that night. The next morning, we enjoyed a breakfast buffet with a few à la carte orders. Food was tasty and healthy. We then browsed the Como Shop and picked up some handicrafts. Ms Som kindly recommended the Como Shambhala massage package and suggested we try the hydrotherapy pool first; the massage was fantastic. Ms Nok patiently guided us through a meditation lesson, and cheerful Ms Janani helped us sort out the hotel activities. The catamaran ride with Mr Moade was a highlight—even if we got sunburnt 😁. On our last morning, the staff saw us off warmly. It was an incredible four days, and we are already looking forward to returning next year—Maldives again, Como Cocoa Island especially. Thank you for the wonderful time 💜"
