PB hotel design editorial

Drawn from the same coral-fringed sandbank that gave ancient Maldivian dhoni builders their timber, Cocoa Island was reimagined by Christina Ong's COMO Hotels as a direct homage to the traditional fishing vessel — each of its 33 overwater villas built in the silhouette of a dhoni hull, their dark-thatched roofs arcing low over the lagoon in South Malé Atoll. The concept, developed with Singapore-based designers working closely to COMO's characteristic restraint, makes the property one of the few in the Maldives where the architectural conceit has genuine cultural grounding rather than generic tropical pastiche. The interiors carry that same discipline. White-painted shiplap walls and steeply pitched woven-rattan ceilings give the villas a compressed, boat-like intimacy, while dark hardwood floors and charcoal-lacquered furniture — low platform beds, clean-lined credenzas with circular rattan mirrors — keep the palette anchored without competing with the turquoise lagoon framed beyond navy-painted bifold doors. The contrast between the deep indigo joinery and the bleached-white structural frame is a detail that recurs across the property, appearing again in the main restaurant, where woven rattan pendant lanterns hang over teak tables paired with rope-and-timber chairs upholstered in navy cushions, the whole room sitting on a striped teak deck that echoes the dhoni's timber planking. The central pool pavilion, set on white sand and shaded by mature takamaka trees, completes a resort that has kept its original idea intact.

About

COMO Cocoa Island has reopened on the 9th of January 2020 following a seven-month refurbishment. COMO Cocoa Island is home to 33-overwater villas inspired by local Dhoni boats, the accommodations have been recast top-to-bottom with clean-lined contemporary interiors created by Singapore-based Lekker Architects. The resort also gained an open-sided Pilates and yoga studio, which sits in an elevated position above the lagoon offering 360-degree views. A thrid of the private Island is occupied by the COMO Shambhala Retreat, the island's wellness centre, which offers Asian-based wellness therapies, nutritional advise and exercise in the resort's state-of-the-art new gym. A highlight is the hydrotherapy pool with high-pressure jets used for water-based treatments. "First of all, I have been to many places. Dare i said i know how a luxury resort should be like, inside out. Something about COMO Cocoa Island that i found very different; I can read the owner’s vision through guests experience. The Resort is small, but you can see Luxury at every corners. The Villa is very simple, classy, elegant and beautiful, the little details, such as the small-old fashion clock by the bed, that being highlight of the room. The team are so warm and professional, Thank you Binoy and IVD team for the In Room Dining, you guys provided a seamless yet touched and efficient service. Phoo and Ufaa team are so friendly, helpful and professional. Oh! I like Como Shambala Iced Tea that Phoo recommened, it taste absolutely increadible, exactly how healthy drinks i wish would taste like :) Thanks to Blu&Ravi at Faru Bar, the cocktails were amazing! You must try Como Shambala Signature Treatments, my husband and i loved it so much. Heart full thank you to Nok, Lalita and Tari, the treatment we had is our favorite experience. Also i would like to sincerely thank the housekeeping team, especially Hood and Aman. We loved how the way they put attention to details. I could go on and on but it would never end, cs this was a ultimate amazing memories i’d hold dear. Thanks Artha, Wisam, Ibbe, Janani and the whole COMO family. 🫶🏻 hoping to see you all again soon."

"Our 3rd time to Cocoa Island and wow this place is so special. The short boat ride from the airport and you arrive in paradise! Definition of understated luxury. We will be back!! Water villas are fantastic. Windows on all walls give you fantastic views. We paid for half-board and this was a great option. Food was stunning. The main thing that makes Cocoa Island is the staff. All were just brilliant, from our butler, bar and restaurant staff, housekeeping staff and the water Centre dive staff made the trip so special. Shout out to Fanny, Sharks and Ali."

"We’ve recently returned from our second stay at Como Cocoa. As expected, we had a brilliant time. This place is special. It soothes the soul and relaxes the mind within hours of arrival. The villas are lovely (we stayed in the loft version, which is worth the upgrade), the setting is gorgeous (only 40mins boat ride from the airport), the food is delicious (Frederico, the chef is a wonder), the massages are worth every penny, the house reef - one of the best, but what really makes this resort? the staff. Many have worked at this resort (or within the Como chain) for years. They are delightful and gave us a warm welcome (especially Fanny and Som) after remembering us from last year. As before, they quickly learn your preferences; like Phoo, noting which cup to serve our tea or Muru knowing whether we’d prefer still to sparkling water at meal times. Nothing is too much trouble. There were a number of Australian guests who really wanted to watch the Australia v USA World Cup match, but kick off time was midnight. Despite this, the bar staff put up a large screen and Ravi and Yudika put in quite the shift serving popcorn and drinks throughout the night. Ravi also makes the best drinks - I thoroughly recommend the peanut butter smoothie. The spa and wellness staff do a brilliant job. I must give a special shout out to NOK who leads the yoga and Pilates sessions. Highly trained and knowledgable she manages to cater for all levels in her classes - no easy feat. I recommend paying for the sound bath meditation session with NOK if you have time. That was relaxation on another level. For anyone wondering whether you have to dress up for dinner, you don’t. In fact you could probably rock up without shoes and no one would bat an eyelid. The snorkelling around the resort is like swimming in a Finding Nemo movie; turtles, small white and black tip sharks, a multitude of rays and other technicolour fish. In fact you don’t even have to get in the water, walking the boardwalks alone will give you plenty of sightings, so anyone a bit nervous of the water won’t miss out. Many of the other guests, were on return visits and I’m not surprised. This place is the place to find your peace. We can’t wait to return. Thanks Como - especially Wisam and Ibrahim (see you next time!)"

"Our stay at Como Cocoa was truly incredible. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel welcome by the warm, genuine hospitality of every member of the team. The exceptional level of service remained consistent throughout our stay. Our Dhoni Overwater Villa was beautifully designed, impeccably maintained, and offered stunning views across the turquoise lagoon. It provided the perfect setting to relax, with the hydrotherapy pool and tranquil surroundings making it easy to switch off and lose track of time. The food was outstanding. Every meal was beautifully prepared using fresh, high-quality ingredients, and there was an excellent variety throughout our stay. As a family of three, there was something for everyone. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the snorkelling excursions, while I made the most of the organised surf trips with Perfect Wave to the nearby breaks, which delivered some incredible waves. The house reef just outside our villa was full of vibrant marine life, making it a fantastic spot for snorkelling at any time. Our four-year-old son absolutely loved spending his days in the outdoor pool and swimming in sea. What really makes Como Cocoa special, though, is its people. The staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of our stay was memorable, always delivering service with warmth, professionalism, and genuine care. If you're looking for a luxurious peaceful island escape, Como Cocoa is an exceptional destination. We can't wait to return."
