PB hotel design editorial

Thaa Atoll sits at the southern edge of the Maldives' inhabited atolls, far enough from Malé that reaching COMO Maalifushi requires a forty-minute seaplane crossing — a journey that effectively puts the Indian Ocean between guests and the rest of the world. That geographical remove shaped everything about the resort when it opened in 2014: the 65 villas arranged across a private island and its surrounding lagoon, the unhurried atmosphere, and an interior language drawn from the COMO group's signature restraint rather than the maximalist tropical excess that characterises so many competitors in the archipelago. The overwater and beach villas, designed with COMO's in-house team, work through a palette of weathered teak, pale linen, and thatch — materials that weather honestly and recede into the lagoon light rather than competing with it. Four-poster beds draped in gauze mosquito netting anchor each bedroom, the canopy framing the water view as deliberately as any picture window. Exposed timber roof structure gives the interior volume without weight. At the pool terrace, a curving infinity edge dissolves into the beach, teak decking edged with smooth river pebbles and shaded by coconut palms bending in the trade wind. The dining deck at dusk — wicker-armed chairs, candlelit tables arranged along the pool edge as the sky moves through amber and rose — captures exactly the calibrated informality that COMO has refined across its resort properties over two decades.

About

Maalifushi by COMO is the first luxury resort in the Maldives to open in the pristine Thaa Atoll in the archipelago’s southwest. With overwater villas and garden suites, Maalifushi is therefore the ultimate away-from-it-all destination for families, couples, surfers and divers. There are some excellent breaks nearby as well as a string of uninhabited private islands, where whale shark sightings are common.

"Excellent experience - Sharippe was instrumental in helping us enjoy Como. Tropic Surf also helped make the experience enjoyable"

"Wonderful resort - good food, excellent cocktails and the best rooms ever! The service was great especially Camilla was great at sorting bookings. Beautiful scenery, my only moan was that you couldn’t walk from your room straight into the sea, you had to walk down the pier and swim from there. Paddling was ok, but there really wasn’t any swimming from the beach!"

"We had the most amazing honeymoon stay at this hotel and couldn’t have been happier with our experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome and special. The atmosphere was beautiful, relaxing, and perfect for a romantic getaway. The Water Villa was spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully prepared, making our stay truly unforgettable. Every detail throughout the hotel showed a high level of care and quality. A special highlight was the food — absolutely outstanding! Every meal was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. The variety and quality exceeded all our expectations, and dining here was one of the best parts of our trip. Overall, we were completely impressed in every aspect and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a perfect vacation or honeymoon destination. We would love to come back someday! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"It was our first trip to the Maldives, and the beautiful Maalifushi resort lived up to our expectations. The quality and service provided was excellent, the staff were all friendly, very efficient and knowledgeable. We were particularly impressed by our lovely villa host Diksha who made sure we felt very well looked after and had no problems. Travelling in the shoulder season meant we experienced windy conditions which restricted the water activities we could do, but a twice daily yoga session delivered to a high standard by Zari was a highlight . Riding bicycles along the boardwalk and into the forest was an enjoyable way to travel around the island. The variety and standard of food, service and villa accommodation were all excellent especially as with the worlds troubles causing many cancellations and the quiet time of year for bookings, there were very few guests."

"Our stay in Como Maalifushi was pleasant, relaxing, and adventurous. The resort is so beautiful, our villa was spacious and elegant with natural lightning and ambience. The delicious food had us to our fill always. We had an exciting adventure snorkeling around the reefs, escaping to the bunny island, and riding our bicycles. It was a good mix of relax, eat, fun, and play. The most special part of our stay are the friendly staff who made us feel welcomed right from the airport team and everyone on the island. Special thanks to Zayan our butler for anticipating and catering to all our needs and always being accessible, our spa therapists Patricia and TP, the nice lady at the gift-shop, and the Housekeeper for keeping our room clean and spotless, and all others who we appreciate but didn't get to mention. Finally, a big thanks to Peter for his warm hospitality and running of this beautiful island so effectively. We shall surely return."
