PB hotel design editorial

Thaa Atoll sits at the southern edge of the Maldives' inhabited atolls, far enough from Malé that reaching COMO Maalifushi requires a forty-minute seaplane crossing — a journey that effectively puts the Indian Ocean between guests and the rest of the world. That geographical remove shaped everything about the resort when it opened in 2014: the 65 villas arranged across a private island and its surrounding lagoon, the unhurried atmosphere, and an interior language drawn from the COMO group's signature restraint rather than the maximalist tropical excess that characterises so many competitors in the archipelago. The overwater and beach villas, designed with COMO's in-house team, work through a palette of weathered teak, pale linen, and thatch — materials that weather honestly and recede into the lagoon light rather than competing with it. Four-poster beds draped in gauze mosquito netting anchor each bedroom, the canopy framing the water view as deliberately as any picture window. Exposed timber roof structure gives the interior volume without weight. At the pool terrace, a curving infinity edge dissolves into the beach, teak decking edged with smooth river pebbles and shaded by coconut palms bending in the trade wind. The dining deck at dusk — wicker-armed chairs, candlelit tables arranged along the pool edge as the sky moves through amber and rose — captures exactly the calibrated informality that COMO has refined across its resort properties over two decades.

About

Maalifushi by COMO is the first luxury resort in the Maldives to open in the pristine Thaa Atoll in the archipelago’s southwest. With overwater villas and garden suites, Maalifushi is therefore the ultimate away-from-it-all destination for families, couples, surfers and divers. There are some excellent breaks nearby as well as a string of uninhabited private islands, where whale shark sightings are common.

"We had the most wonderful stay at COMO Maalifushi for our honeymoon, and it truly exceeded our expectations. From the beautiful surroundings and incredible food to the diving, spa, and exceptional service, everything made our time here feel incredibly special. Our villa host, Rana, was amazing throughout our stay — so warm, attentive, and thoughtful. She always made sure we were taken care of and even surprised us with not one, but two beautifully prepared bubble baths. It was such a lovely and romantic touch and just one example of how the team went above and beyond for us. The food across the resort was excellent. We especially loved Tai, the Japanese restaurant, where we had incredibly fresh sushi and sashimi. We also really enjoyed the Indian set menu served at the main restaurant one evening — everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The wellness experiences were another highlight of our stay. We started our mornings with daily yoga sessions with Zari, who was wonderful and made each session such a peaceful and enjoyable way to begin the day. The COMO Shambhala spa was equally incredible. We had one of the best massages we’ve ever experienced, as well as a couples massage workshop, which was such a fun and memorable experience to do together. TP was incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely one of the best massage therapists we have ever met. We also absolutely loved having the dive shop and marine biology center right on the island. We both went scuba diving with Orsi and JJ, who were incredible — professional, patient, reassuring, and an absolute pleasure to dive with. The house reef itself is beautiful, and seeing sea turtles while both diving and snorkeling was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. What really stood out, though, was how genuinely cared for we felt by everyone at COMO Maalifushi. The entire team made our honeymoon feel special, relaxed, and effortless. We left with so many wonderful memories and would happily come back again. Thank you especially to Rana, TP, Zari, Orsi, JJ, and the entire COMO Maalifushi team for making our honeymoon so unforgettable!"

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A truly magical place There are beautiful places in the world and then there are places that seem almost impossible to describe. COMO Maalifushi is one of them. From the moment you arrive by seaplane and see the Thaa Atoll scattered below like pieces of turquoise glass in an endless deep blue ocean, you know you are somewhere extraordinary. The water around Maalifushi beckons you every second. Crystal clear, luminous and constantly changing, beneath it is another world entirely, alive with coral, turtles, fish and reef life. The island itself is beautiful without feeling overdone. There is a wonderful sense of space, calm and privacy with an understated warmth throughout the resort. What makes it especially memorable though is the people. Every team member seems genuinely determined to make your stay wonderful. A special thank you to Almaas from Guest Experience who went all out to make our experience the best it could be and to our villa host Zaeen, who was always quietly keeping an eye on us to make sure everything was just right. We joked that he was a little like Harvey the heron, the resort’s resident guardian! Warm, thoughtful and such good fun. I highly recommend learning to surf while you’re here. A very special thank you to Brooke and Angus at Tropicsurf who firmly believe it is never too late to start! We even had the magic of seeing spinner dolphins on the way to our surf spot. If you already love surfing, there are some extra sweet surprises waiting for you at Como Maalifushi too. The food is fresh, beautifully presented and consistently wonderful and the food and beverage team simply cannot do enough for you. Their smiles and hospitality make it more enjoyable, the setting is breathtaking too. The same warmth extends across the Marine Centre, housekeeping and the many people working quietly behind the scenes who make everything feel effortless. We loved our turtle snorkel in the deep blue, incredible, rays and more. Our Japanese 3 course special at Tai was insanely good, you have to sip on a cocktail or two from this view at least once in your lifetime and then relax with food that feels like art in motion. And then there are the sunsets. Horizons turn coral, pink and gold across the ocean. You feel alive. There are some places that give you beautiful photographs and others that give you memories you know you will carry for the rest of your life. COMO Maalifushi gave us both. A truly magical place and an experience our family will never forget. 🙏❤️"

"I visited COMO Maalifushi during the low season in late August, when the resort was wonderfully quiet and uncrowded. It set the tone for the entire trip — peaceful, relaxed, and exactly the kind of escape I was looking for. One of my favorite things about the resort was a small uninhabited island nearby, home to a group of rabbits. I went over almost every day by paddleboard or kayak at no additional charge. The staff appear to look after and feed the rabbits regularly, and there was something incredibly relaxing about lying back in a hammock, watching them run around on an otherwise uninhabited tropical island. Tropicsurf has a base at the resort, and surfing was easily one of the highlights of my stay. During my week at Maalifushi, I went out five times with my guide, Angus. He was attentive, patient, and genuinely helpful throughout every session. His consistent effort and encouragement made the whole surfing experience especially enjoyable, and I really appreciated the time and energy he put into each trip. A special thank you as well to our villa host, Lora, who was warm, thoughtful, and attentive throughout my stay. I have to be honest here that the food was mediocre at best. Not many options in general and the Japanese restaurant TAI is quite overpriced even for resort standards. I got the full board plan but still only $90 credit on à la carte / $50 credit towards omakase course, which was not enough in amount that I had to munch on my chocolate bars to get full. Andy, a nice Kazakh lady along with others were helpful and attentive during my visits to the restaurants. Overall, it was a good peaceful week in a beautiful part of the archipelago. A big thank you to Angus, Lora, Andy and everyone at COMO Maalifushi"

The days seem to unfold around the water, swimming, snorkelling, discovering, watching the enormous tropical skies roll through or simply sitting still and taking it all in. The sunsets deserve their own mention. Horizons turns coral, pink and gold and reflects across the ocean. You feel alive!
