PB hotel design editorial

From the air, the geometry of Constance Halaveli tells you everything about its ambitions: a sinuous chain of over-water villas extending from a crescent-shaped island in North Ari Atoll, the thatched rooftops threading across lagoon water that shifts from pale jade at the reef edge to deep indigo beyond. The resort, which opened in 2009 following a complete redevelopment of the original Halaveli island, comprises 86 villas spread across both the island and its over-water jetties, with the layout engineered to give each unit an uninterrupted lagoon aspect and direct water access. The architecture draws on a scaled-up interpretation of Maldivian vernacular form — steeply pitched thatch roofs, heavy timber framing in dark-stained hardwood, and louvred screens referencing traditional dhivehi lattice patterns — translated into generous villa volumes rather than modest local structures. Inside, each circular-plan bedroom is defined by its conical timbered ceiling, which rises to a central apex above dark-stained hardwood floors, low platform beds dressed in ocean-blue linen runners, and curved upholstered seating on circular patterned rugs. The over-water restaurant extends the same structural vocabulary outward: exposed beam trusses, rattan dining chairs, and folding glass walls that dissolve the boundary between the dining floor and the lagoon below. The palette throughout — warm timber, cream upholstery, accents of cobalt and teal — reflects the surrounding water rather than competing with it.

About

Floating in the North Ari atoll and shaped like a curved Dhoni (Maldivian boat) is the five star Constance Halaveli. It is a place where time seems to have stopped and dreams become reality. Water and sand combine and lie in contrast to the exuberant green of the foliage. The shadow of the 87 villas falls on the turquoise lagoon. The three restaurants and the spa ensure that both body and mind are well cared for. Constance Halaveli is a place to relax and regenerate in overwhelming peacefulness.

"We stayed at Constance Halaveli for five nights in March 2026 in a Beach Villa with pool on all inclusive. Having visited around 40 resorts in the Maldives, some of them multiple times, with more than 500 room nights overall, I can confidently say that our stay at Halaveli was not just exceptional and absolutely worth a return visit, but the resort ranks amongst our very favourites. Here is why: Pre arrival experience From the very beginning, everything was seamless. We were in touch with Noni, who was simply brilliant. Highly responsive, accommodating, and always one step ahead, she ensured a smooth arrival experience and gave us peace of mind throughout the entire reservation process. Island and location: Halaveli is located in North Ari Atoll and operates one hour ahead of Male time. Its setting is secluded, with very little traffic and minimal light pollution. A few resorts can be seen in the distance, but otherwise it is just endless shades of blue on the horizon. The island is surrounded by a stunning lagoon shimmering in beautiful hues. The beach sand is exceptionally soft, and the seafloor in many areas is equally pleasant. You can walk around the island almost entirely, something we consider a rare feature nowadays. The seawalls on one side are a complete non issue, invisible at high tide and helpful in maintaining wide beaches and excellent water access. Interior paths are covered with some of the softest sand we have ever experienced, making barefoot walking effortless at all times. Only certain areas such as the bar and parts of the main restaurant have slightly coarser sand, likely a practical solution when winds pick up but not the best for sensitive feet. Vegetation is lush, a bit palm heavy and less diverse, and well maintained. The island is fogged daily, and despite the large garden areas, we experienced no mosquito issues. There are no bicycles, but the island is small enough that everything is easily within walking distance. Only the water jetty measuring nearly 850 meters is pretty long (by Maldives standards). Villas: We stayed in Beach Villa 11 and absolutely loved it. It offered great privacy, a large and beautifully maintained garden, a sheltered deck, and a warm, clean pool. With eight loungers overall, there is plenty of space to relax. Maybe they can add cushions to the loungers to make them even more comfortable. The villa includes thoughtful features such as quiet air conditioning that does not blow onto the bed, a spacious outdoor bathroom with an outdoor shower in the back and an additional shower to desalinate and refresh in the front. There is a wide range of amenities. Also we appreciated the small welcome gifts such as caps and sunglasses. Both were really good quality and in heavy use from us. The switch system is intuitive, and housekeeping was immaculate, with small touches like folding laundry and placing it on hangers really standing out. Yes, the villa is slightly older, darker, colonial style and not the largest inside, but it is very comfortable and well maintained. The loo being inside with a door is a good feature. Careful makeovers and refurbs are ongoing, and the updated villas are brighter with lighter tones. Since we mainly used the interior for sleeping only, this was not an issue for us. There is a slight lack of closed racks for storage, but overall that was just a minor issue. We appreciate that the villa has a sufficiently huge sheltered outside area for the rainy and too sunny days, although the trees take away some of the intensity. Food and beverage: Halaveli offers three restaurants. Jahaz serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as a buffet. Meeru Grill is located on the beach with a casual setting and focuses on fresh seafood and meat cuts. Jing is the signature overwater restaurant with a bar. Breakfast at Jahaz was good, with attentive service and a broad international selection. A bit more variety, especially among warm dishes, would have been welcome, but overall quality was solid. Lunch is an international buffet with daily variation, while dinner features seven themed nights which repeat weekly. Dinner stands out compared to lunch with more choice, additional live cooking stations, and even higher quality ingredients. We attended the Thai night, which was particularly impressive and offered an enormous selection, far more than one person could reasonably try. Jing was a highlight. It offers French inspired international fine dining, and everything from food and drinks to service and ambiance was impeccable. Some of the best meals we have ever had in the Maldives were here. The cheese, honey and ice cream dessert was so mouth watering. While there is technically a dress code, it is very relaxed and should not deter anyone. For men just dont come sleeveless or a crinkle shirt and put on any kind of shoes. In comparison, Meeru Grill was good but did not quite reach the same level. The dishes lacked a final touch, and the presentation on elevated "small mobile grills" was not ideal for us and they shaked when cutting the meat. While it kept food warm, sides and sauces cooled quickly and felt somewhat disconnected to the main dish standing in the shadow of the grill on the table. Service throughout the resort was excellent. The wine list is extensive, more than 120 pages, and while some entries repeat across vintages, it remains impressive and diverse. Even wine enthusiasts will find plenty to explore. Halaveli offers BB, HB, and AI. HB and AI both are really generous, with true dine around across all restaurants. Only a few premium dishes at Jing and Meeru incur a surcharge, with HB and AI guests receiving 50 percent off. Drinks, particularly wines, are very reasonably priced, likely due to direct importing. The eight really knowledgeable sommeliers available, will ensure you will always have the perfect wine pairing for your food. Cocktails, particularly at Jing, are creative and well executed, and included in the all inclusive plan. Overall, Halaveli is a true destination for indulgence. A small improvement point would be a more generously stocked minibar (bottled beer) and wine chiller (more sorts). Snorkelling: We had heard mixed opinions beforehand, so expectations were moderate, but the reef exceeded them. While not the best we have experienced in the Maldives, it is still very enjoyable. Especially the main part behind the seawalls around roughly half the island is a fine reef with a mostly steep and deep dropoff. This area has a good amount of fish life, sharks, the occasional turtle, eagle rays, an interesting topography, overhanging cliffs at the beginning of the water villa jetty. Admittedly, top-reef coral is dead in most areas and the area from half the water villa jetty to the end is certainly less appealing with little coral (except the top boulder coral at the end), more softly sloping sandy drop off and less marine life. Access to the reef is easy, and currents were manageable during our stay, although this likely varies seasonally. At low tide, access to this reef is restricted and due to the deep dropoff in its best areas, the reef tends to rely more on visibility than other reefs as a lot of the stuff is going on in deeper waters. A minor suggestion would be clearer marking of exit ladders on the jetty, and the pods are too far apart, making walking along the planks during the day alsmost impossible. People: Halaveli's biggest asset are the people working there. Having stayed at many resorts in the Maldives, I can say this is among the most genuinely friendly and welcoming teams we have encountered. From the approachable General Manager to Executive Chef Hammad, Chef Tapas, Max, our waiter Waheed, everyone was warm, helpful, and consistently friendly, working with a smile on their face. Halaveli does not provide the classic butler service, but the villas have a host (or at least we had one). Adamino was super lovely, caring, attentive, just a kind soul and the perfect host for a seamless and enjoyable stay with a human touch. He arranged everything for us perfectly balanced between care and respect for privacy. The clientele at Halaveli is predominantly couples, younger Asians and couples of all ages from around the world. Everyone we encountered was friendly and open to conversation and there seemed to be many repeat guests. During our stay, there were relatively few families and children, despite the resort offering family friendly facilities (kidsclub etc...). The vibe at Halaveli was relaxed, luxurious, inviting, familiar. A classic approach to luxury without being overly posh or fancy. No big entertainment except the occasional musicians on some evenings. Exactly as we like it.... We did not make use of the spa, but it looked very inviting with a nice relaxation area overlooking the Indian Ocean. The gift shops, both, were very well stocked and not overpriced (by Maldives standards). Again, everybody was very friendly. Finally, the organisation of our stay was just perfect, especially when compared to some other resorts and probably the best we had on our mulit-stay itinerary this time. Halaveli is certainly on our list for a return visit. We did really enjoy every moment of our stay."
