PB hotel design editorial

Strung across a shallow coral reef in Raa Atoll, roughly 55 kilometres north of the nearest inhabited island, a double spine of thatch-roofed water villas extends from a densely palmed sandbank into the Indian Ocean like a compass needle pointing toward the horizon. Emerald Faarufushi Resort & Spa, which opened in 2021 as part of the Italian-owned Emerald Collection, arranges its 80 villas — split between overwater and beach categories — across one of the more remote atolls in the Maldivian archipelago, where seaplane transfers and genuine isolation remain the governing conditions of arrival. The interiors navigate a tension familiar to contemporary Maldivian resort design: how to deploy tropical vernacular structure — exposed hardwood roof trusses, pitched thatch, louvred timber screens — without the result feeling either rustic or generic. The overwater villas answer this with a polished counterpoint, pairing the warmth of natural oak joinery and sliding barn-style doors in a woven grey panel against grey porcelain floors and white marble vanities, with brass pendant lights and woven-rattan outdoor chairs keeping the palette anchored in the warm end of the spectrum. Beach villas take a different, warmer register entirely, with wide-plank teak flooring and amber-lit cove ceilings giving bedrooms the feeling of a well-crafted cabin rather than a hotel room. The main restaurant, open to the lagoon on one side, draws the structural language together through bundled-timber column screens and oversized rattan pendant lights above teak tables set with cobalt glassware.

"We were thoroughly impressed by the excellent service, F&B, and beautiful environment. Swimming with turtles and mantas made my birthday trip truly unforgettable. Special thanks to our villa host, Apekcha, for her outstanding hospitality!"

"Thanks for the most amazing holiday! ❤️ Beautiful island, soft sandy beaches, lovely infrastructure and really nice design. We stayed in Villa 203 & 204. Swaying palm trees and very green vegetation. Perfect beach just in front. Food in the different restaurants was delicious and varied. Last but certainly not the least is the champions. The team in Emerald is the best! Beautiful and very talented and nice people. Everyone from the gardeners to the staff behind the scene are just amazing. Thanks to all 😘 Also big thanks and hugs to Villa Butler Igga, Naveen who took care of our villa. Sommelier Neema, Sommelier Ram, waitress Sajanie and Adele. ❤️😘❤️😘"

"We’ve just returned from the most incredible stay at Emerald Faarafushi Resort & Spa and honestly, it exceeded every expectation we had. From the moment we arrived at Male airport, everything was seamless. The setting is absolutely breathtaking with crystal clear waters and powder white sand. Our beach villa with pool was stunning, beautifully designed, spotlessly clean, and with the most amazing views. What truly sets this resort apart is the service. Every member of staff was fantastic, warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Nothing was ever too much trouble. A very special mention has to go to Fayidhu, who looked after our villa. It was always immaculate, and his artistic designs he left on the bed few times were fabulous. Also Sajanie, one of the waitresses, who was absolutely wonderful, so friendly, attentive, and always made us feel so welcome. Last but not least, Igga, our villa host. He was so friendly, super helpful and made us feel completely cared for from start to finish. Another standout was how incredible the team were with our daughter’s allergies. They went above and beyond to make sure she was safe and included, often preparing her own meals so she could enjoy the experience just as much as the rest of us. That level of care meant the world to us as a family. The food was another highlight with incredible variety and quality across all restaurants. Every meal felt like a treat, and the allinclusive offering is one of the best we’ve experienced. We also really appreciated the daily interaction with the resort management team. It made such a difference seeing how present and engaged they were with guests, always checking in and ensuring everything was perfect. This was more than just a holiday, it was an experience we’ll never forget. If you’re considering the Maldives, this resort is truly something special. We’ll 100% be back 💕"

"BIG THANK YOU to Rao and ALL ( sorry too many to mention ) his staff for the most perfect 6 days in this Paradise Hotel From the minute you arrive to you leave you are treated above and beyond Rao is an excellent Manager kind humble and taking time to care that all is well The staff are constantly attentive , helping you and with smiles on their faces The food was fabulous different Theme nights which was good fun and lots of variety. Italian night wow !!!! The whole island and Room is so clean and tidy . I also had the best massage at the lovely Spa in beautiful surroundings There are resorts that advertise themselves as 5 star and then there are the genuine 5+ star resorts where every detail is carefully managed to ensure guests are truly looked after. Emerald Faarufushi stands out as being head and shoulders above the rest. We will return Thank you Louise and Matthew Harrison"
