PB hotel design editorial

One of the earliest luxury properties to establish the Maldives as a serious destination for design-conscious travellers, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa has sat on its reef-ringed island in North Malé Atoll since 1998, quietly defining the visual language that the region's hospitality industry has been reworking ever since. The overwater bungalow typology, the thatched pavilion roofline against flat atoll water, the wooden jetty threading guests out above the lagoon — Kuda Huraa crystallised all of it before the Maldives became shorthand for aspirational escapism. The aerial view confirms the compositional logic: a crescent of overwater villas extending from the island's eastern tip, their cadamba-thatched roofs stepping in disciplined sequence above turquoise shallows, while a sweeping kidney-form infinity pool curves along the beach edge, lined in dark stone and framed by a thatched meditation pavilion at the water's end. Inside the villas, the interiors deploy a palette drawn from lagoon and reef — cerulean wall panels, woven-grass ceiling linings stretched across dark-stained timber trusses, dhurrie-patterned rugs in indigo and chalk, and dark-framed joinery set against white-rendered walls. The effect is calm rather than spare. The resort's signature restaurant, Baraabaru, works a different register entirely: hammered bronze column lanterns, carved Balinese-inflected detail, frangipani-scented terraces, and a thatched overwater dining gazebo that becomes, at dusk, one of the more atmospheric dining rooms in the Indian Ocean.

"We loved our time at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa. What an experience! From the moment we arrived on the boat, the team looked after us with 6-star service. The island is breathtaking and so luxurious. The spa is simply gorgeous and a beautiful experience on its own island, accessible by the most adorable boat. They have thought of every little detail. The rooms are spacious, super comfortable and modern and the beach is simply stunning. But most of all it is the service from the incredible staff that sets this resort apart. It is what makes the Four Seasons such an incredible brand. So warm and welcoming -- nothing is too much trouble. It is wonderful for families and children. Our 10 year old simply loved it! He didn't want to leave. We stayed in a sunset beach villa with a pool and it was perfect."

"It takes a team of exceptional leaders to culture the best traditions and values of a successful organization such as Four Seasons Hotel group. What we experienced at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa was a legendary level in the hospitality industry. We have never been so impressed by a team of exceptional leaders who are so involved in every layer of service. I want to offer my highest recognition to Eduardo the Executive Chef, Zaneta at Reception&Room operation, and Peter at Restaurant Operation for their immensely positive influence on their staff, making our stay beyond our expectations, while humbly giving the credits to their team. The staff here is simply amazing. I truly love how Four Seasons cultures every staff member here with positive energy, encouragement and education. The entire staff is courteous, thoughtful and friendly. They always smiled and greeted you. The buggies slowed down or even stopped for us walking anywhere in the resort. Everyone I spoke to mentioned that Four Seasons’ management team helped them developed their career skills and met their career goals. I want to give my highest recognition to the excellent teamsters in the restaurant operation: Yaan, Farey, Rose, and Shareef. Buggy masters: Ibu, Mazuu and Adil. Reception: Simone and Ryan. These are truly valuable assets to Four Seasons. We have many resorts to choose from, and yet they are the reasons why we continue to come back to visit FS Kuda Huraa. from the Shens Family"

"Four Seasons Kuda Huraa was one of the best experiences I’ve had in the Maldives. Every aspect was amazing, the attention to detail was incredible, and most importantly ran by the best people. The staff go above and beyond for their guests and it truly makes your time here feel special. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Marco de Frutos. Not only was he an incredible chef, his warm presence throughout every dining experience made it memorable. From early morning breakfast to the wonderful Maldivian night at Kandu Grill, we enjoyed every moment of it. Our dining experience here at Four Seasons was so incredible that every day we woke up excited to enjoy the food that the talented team has put together. I would also like to give a big appreciation to Marco and Fasil for gifting me the recipe of my favorite pasteries and taking the time to explain the baking techniques behind it. Fasil did a wonderful job teaching me about the process of baking and I truly appreciate his dedication to his craft. The chefs at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa are on another level of excellence and talent, and I feel privileged to have experienced their service. My family would love to mention the wonderful waiters at Cafe Huraa, namely Farey and Yaan. Farey always made the effort to talk to us even if we were placed outside of his section. He was not only attentive and great at his job, we felt so connected and welcomed by his presence. Yaan was also a wonderful server and our family always had great experiences with him. His attention and service was consistently great throughout each meal. We appreciate the quality of the work from the servers and the incredible service on their end. Farey and Yaan are truly great representatives for Four Seasons renowned hospitality. I had the most incredible time during my Nurse shark snorkel tour, Dolphin Cruise, and local island at Four Seasons. However, it was made even better by the incredible guides, Mansoor and Akram. They were both so knowledgeable about the Maldives and I learned so much after talking to them. Both of them are so warm and hospitable and made our time here amazing. I’m incredibly impressed by their thoughtfulness and it was something that touched my heart during my time here. Before the island tour with my family, Mansoor gifted our entire family handmade Maldivian bracelets. I was so touched by this act of kindness and knew that the staff here at Four Seasons are truly special. Mansoor was especially hospitable during all of our activities which made our time here extra enjoyable. The staff at Four Seasons genuinely connect with their guests on another level."

"We stayed at the Four Seasons Kuda Hura 22 years ago for our honey moon. Without a doubt it was one of the most amazing trips we have ever had. It began our love affair with the Maldives. We usually go to different resorts on each visit but this time we thought we would take a trip with 2 of our kids back to Kuda Hura. It did not disappoint. I always felt that the Four Seasons brand distinguishes itself because of its service and we experience the same exceptional service we did 22 years ago. The thing I appreciated most is that everybody knew our name and would greet us whenever they saw us. We stayed in a beach sunset villa. I believe both the sunset and sunrise villas in this category are the newer ones on the island. I was spacious very well lit with a pool and a nice access directly to the beach. The sunset was beautiful from our villa. We went on full board and the only complaint I have is that I ate too much. We usually take half board but because we were going with the kids (teenagers) we took full board. The thing I liked about the full/half board is that we did not feel limited in where we could eat or what we could order. It was not based on a $ cap at certain restaurants as I have experienced at other hotels in the Maldives. The full board extended to all the restaurants. The food at the Grill was especially good and we loved the steaks. Seafood was equally as good. Overall a fantastic stay. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a luxury holiday in the Maldives."
