PB hotel design editorial

Among the northernmost resort islands in the Maldives, deep within Haa Alifu Atoll where the Indian Ocean spreads wide and relatively few properties have staked a claim, Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa makes its most arresting argument from the air: a sinuous double-arm of overwater villas extending from the island's reef edge, their thatched roofs stepping out across turquoise shallows in a configuration closer to organic growth than resort planning. The aerial geometry is genuinely distinctive — the jetty curves and bifurcates rather than marching in the straight lines typical of Maldivian overwater developments, giving the 150-villa property a sprawl that feels less engineered than accumulated. Inside, the villas sustain a material language built around dark-stained hardwood flooring, exposed timber ceiling trusses, and louvered wood screens filtering lagoon light — a tropical vernacular that avoids pastiche by keeping the palette restrained: white walls, sand-toned upholstery, and the occasional accent of cobalt or terracotta. Vaulted cathedral ceilings lift each bedroom well beyond the expected scale, ceiling fans turning slowly beneath the apex. The main restaurant opens on wide folding glazed panels to a deck and infinity pool that dissolves toward the horizon at dusk, wicker dining chairs arranged on honey-toned hardwood in a room whose structural trusses give it the feeling of a generous, well-crafted boathouse rather than a hotel dining room.

Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa Reviews

"We just returned from a wonderful 7-night stay at Hideaway Beach Resort, Maldives, and I can honestly say this was one of the most memorable vacations we’ve ever had as a family. We are a family of four from Mumbai with two children (10 & 12 years old), and this trip came at a time when we really needed rest and reconnection. I was also travelling with a fractured foot and reduced mobility, which could easily have made the trip difficult — but the team at Hideaway took such thoughtful care of me that I came back feeling deeply grateful. We’ve stayed at several luxury resorts over the years, and I genuinely do not understand why Hideaway isn’t consistently featured on “best resorts in the Maldives” or “best house reefs in the world” lists. It deserves to be there. In many ways, it outshines several far more talked-about luxury properties. What we loved: • The reef — absolutely extraordinary. This is honestly among the best reefs I have ever experienced in the Maldives. The island’s unique double reef structure and natural channel create incredible marine life visibility. We saw mantas, eagle rays, turtles and reef sharks literally from the steps of our water villa. Every snorkelling session felt magical. • The size and privacy of the island. Hideaway feels expansive and peaceful. The water villas are beautifully spaced out, so even when the resort is occupied, you still feel like you have your own quiet corner of paradise. • The sports facilities — unmatched. This was one of the biggest reasons we booked the property, and it exceeded expectations. The pickleball court was our favourite, but the resort also has tennis courts, padel, basketball, badminton, football, table tennis, golf simulator, pool tables and more. I honestly have not seen this range of sports facilities maintained so well at another resort. For families with older kids or active travellers, this place is fantastic. • The food. We are vegetarians and do not consume eggs, and yet we had no difficulty eating well throughout the stay. There was enough variety and the quality was consistently excellent. Special mention to the Indian food at Samsara and the food at Meeru Bar, both of which we thoroughly enjoyed. • The wine experience — truly special. As someone who loves wine, this became one of the highlights of the trip for me. Sam, the sommelier and F&B Manager, organised a beautiful wine tasting session for my husband and me, complete with WSET-style tasting notes and detailed explanations of grape varietals, regions and flavour profiles. It honestly felt like a personalised wine masterclass rather than a standard tasting. His passion, knowledge and warmth elevated the entire experience, and he introduced us to some truly exceptional wines we may never have tried otherwise. Thank you, Sam — this was genuinely unforgettable. Most importantly — the people. The staff at Hideaway are among the warmest, most attentive and genuinely kind people we have encountered anywhere. They remembered preferences, anticipated needs before we voiced them, and consistently made us feel cared for. Some very special mentions: • Naseer (our butler) — no request was ever too small. He was prompt, thoughtful, extremely accommodating and always reassuring, especially given my mobility limitations. • Sam (Sommelier & F&B Manager) — he ensured we consumed some of the best wine I have ever had! Beyond the wine experience, he has an exceptional instinct for hospitality and guest experience. You can tell he genuinely cares about making guests feel special. • Dayu — the sweetest and most solution-oriented person. My children absolutely adored her. She was always warm, smiling and so lovely to interact with. • Chirag & Yanti at Meeru Bar — both were exceptional. Polite, observant and incredibly attentive. Yanti especially impressed us by remembering even the smallest preferences — after I requested lemon with my water once, she ensured it arrived every single time without my asking again. • Nasir (buggy driver) — always cheerful, smiling and happy to help. Sometimes it’s the small interactions that stay with you, and his positivity truly added to our days. • Roshni & Ibrahim at Matheefaru — attentive, gracious and so welcoming. They made every meal feel relaxed and special. Rasool at the pickleball court - who was ever-willing to partner my husband and kids, so they could have a proper doubels game (because of my foot fracture, I was unable to play with them) What I would recommend to future guests: • Take the all-inclusive plan if possible. We were on the AI plan and found it completely worth it. It allows you to truly relax and enjoy the experience without constantly thinking about costs. If you enjoy drinks or premium beverages, the White Platinum plan may be even better value. • This resort is especially wonderful for families with slightly older children or teenagers. The sports infrastructure and activities really shine for this age group. • The seaplane transfer is long (about 75 minutes), so do factor that into your travel plans. That said, the entire experience is seamless and very professionally managed. The lounge is excellent, and the views during the flight are spectacular. • The water villas are beautiful and very comfortable. We especially loved the plunge pool depth and privacy. The resort also has larger multi-bedroom villas that would be perfect for celebrations or larger family groups. All in all, this was a truly special stay for us, and we will most certainly return. Our sincere thanks once again to the entire Hideaway team for making us feel so cared for and so welcome. See you again soon."

"My wife and I visited the island a few weeks ago. We stayed in the overwater bungalow and found it to be an absolute dream. This island's ambiance is one of relaxation and chillness. Its not a party island and that is OK, chill was exactly what we were looking for. It delivered spectacularly on that level. This is an excellent place to let your hair down and recuperate. The island also features a ton of wildlife, especially in the ocean. There are coral reefs all around the island which make for some spectacular snorkeling. Fish of every kind, eels, sea turtles, rays, and sharks were all seen on a daily basis. The wildlife was truly spectacular. There are 5 restaurants on the island. We purchased an all inclusive package, so all food and beverage was included. We would recommend this to anyone as the food and drink prices are steep (consistently looking at 150-250$ per person for a three course meal). There is good variety in the meals, a restaurant's menu would have 8-10 appetizer choices, 6-10 entree options and 6-8 choices for deserts. We found lunch and dinner to have the same menu unless eating at Oasis (the higher end restaurant on the island). Very pleased with the dining options, variety of food and quality of the food as well. They have some great chefs! The overwater bungalow room was amazing. It was very clean, very spacious and nicely furnished. It included a private outdoor pool which was larger than expected. The bungalow sits in about 5 ft of ocean water and has stair access to the water. The scenery was amazing. There was nothing lacking in our expectations of the bungalow and would most definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting. The workers there really helped make our trip amazing, they were so much fun to interact with and so helpful and kind! They are helpful, professional and fun. A special shoutout to our awesome butler Zareer who took care of every little detail we needed on the island. To the buggy drivers Yusuf and Nasir who always took us around the island cheerfully. They also went out of their way to make our trip special, and Yusuf showed us our first turtle on the island! Then to all the cook and wait staff that made the meals so enjoyable and so kind: Vittu, was so much fun to talk to and served us perfectly, he is a forever friend, it brought so much joy to us when we would run into him! (Vittus manager was also so kind and helpful!) Animesh, who worked at oasis, went out of his way to make our experience amazing, he was so helpful! Ravisha, Ajmal, Widi, Ali, Roshni, Debanshu, Aditi, Mujay, Lan Zhichen, and Liu Yi were all so kind and helpful and made our breakfast and dinners so enjoyable, we loved saying good morning and good evening to us, they greeted us with smiles and such kindness, the guy who made our omelets and our pasta were so kind and Aditi did the fruit and was so kind and special to meet and went out of her way to help us! Also, Deliah was the duty manager and was so kind to talk to and it was so sweet meeting her! We miss them, and they should all get bonuses because we will recommend this hotel because of them and how helpful and special they are! Thank you guys all for making our time so special. Hideaway Resort is quite a ways to get to. After arriving in Male, you'll take a seaplane an hour and ten minutes to get the island. There is no shortage of different island getaway options in the Maldives but we think Hideaway is special because of the size of the island. It seemed to be a bit larger than other resorts, had several things to do and a good number of restaurants to eat at. At the same time it is not too large either. Some of the resorts are comprised of a set of overwater bungalows and a restaurant or two. Hideaway was worth the extra time to get to. I think 7-10 days is the ideal trip length (especially if visiting from the states since it is such an effort to get there)."
