PB hotel design editorial

Among the Maldives resorts that defined the early 2000s shift toward design-conscious Indian Ocean hospitality, Huvafen Fushi remains the one most credited with raising the bar — a private island in North Malé Atoll developed by Per AQUUM and opened in 2004, whose 44 pavilions and bungalows were conceived by New Zealand-based design studio Glade Architects with interiors guided by a warm, material-forward sensibility that still holds up two decades on. The aerial view confirms the island's small scale and deliberate layout: a densely planted coral-sand landmass trailing two long jetties of overwater bungalows that arc into the lagoon, the thatched roofs of the water villas sitting low against a horizon of two distinct blues. Inside, the language shifts between two registers. The overwater villas favour deep-stained timber floors, four-poster beds with dark structural frames, and steeply pitched slatted ceilings in warm hardwood — the whole interior opening through folding glass walls onto a thatched sun deck just above the water. The beach villas take a lighter approach: white Roman blinds, pale upholstered chaise longues, and the same burnished timber floors framed by floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides, allowing the palm canopy and lagoon to function as living wallpaper. The beach restaurant deploys Vondom-style white lattice chairs against teak table tops, the white-and-cobalt palette echoing the reef beyond. What sets Huvafen apart from comparable properties is the restraint — nothing here competes with the Indian Ocean itself.

"Huvafen Fushi exceeded our expectations for our 5 night stay. We used Hilton points for a 5 night stay. It is most definitely not one of the larger resorts that are flooded with families enjoying water parks, go karts and the like. This is high end accommodation (fully renovated in 2023) quality cuisine, and good service wherever you look. Snorkeling,  lazing by the pool, watching the fish, or the sunsets.  At one stage there was a glitch in the service, which can happen anywhere, but the GM was told about it, rectified the problem straight away, and made it up to us. The food outlets are very good in atmosphere,  service staff were outstanding,  and their unique cuisine.  Just 46 bungalows, and it's no wonder George Clooney and Tom Cruise have stayed here. We stayed at another resort last year , where we had to use the seaplane for around USD1000, after a 2 hour wait, after a bus ride from the airport. We much preferred the 30 minute speedboat access from the airport to Huvafen Fushi - much more enjoyable.  Choose your resort carefully, as some in the Maldives are too large for peace and quiet, or too close to Male on the southern side."

"Was an unforgettable experience. Lots of different excursions provided, which make your experience even more colourful and leave long-lasting memories. Room is always clean and cozy. Detail-oriented staff and service. Everyone is very nice to you and makes you feel welcomed. Location is perfect in terms of isolation, when you just wanna get rest from the noisy world, so the atmosphere is very peaceful. Spa!! Is the best I’ve been to so far, I’ve never felt so relaxed during the massage. Overall, my brain got completely disconnected from my anxiety and finally I felt relaxed. Wish I could stay here for a month honestly, and I’m looking forward to coming back soon. Thank you everyone! If you’re looking for a paradise, it awaits you right here, at Huvafen Fushi."

"We visited this island for the first time and really enjoyed our stay. The welcome was very personal, the beach pool villa is simply stunning and we enjoyed also the beautiful main pool, dinner at the Salt, the overwarter gym and beautiful reef. Sidu took very well care of us and we would also like to thank Alim, Shahid and Jinaan. Thanks to everybody who took care of us!"

"This place absolutely is magical. From the moment we arrived to leaving on the boat last Thursday morning… it was just heaven. We were looked after superbly - the staff are just amazing and go above and beyond to make sure you have the best experience and have everything you need. They work so hard and that did not go unnoticed. Special shout out to our butlers Samaah and Saif who were fabulous and but to be honest ALL the staff in the resort were just wonderful. Nothing was ever too much trouble and I honestly felt so spoilt not having to lift a finger for 10 days! The overwater villa we had was incredible - I had to keep pinching myself every time I looked out from the deck - not only the incredible view and crystal clear turquoise water, but so much sea life in and always something swimming by - so never a dull moment but that added to the magic of it all! Spotlessly clean with really nice touches in the villa - Huvafen flip flops to wear around the resort, beach bags and yoga mats! You had thought of everything. I could have sat on the deck all day long looking out over the reef but managed to drag myself away to enjoy the main pool and beach. The main infinity pool is fabulous and the whole set up around the pool and beach worked really well. Plenty of shade if you needed it and not far to walk to get a drink or lunch! We loved the salt bath too and as for the beach - breathtaking. Every single meal we had was delicious - plenty of choice and presented so beautifully and tasted amazing. We enjoyed the Lobster BBQ on the Sunday evening which was great and done so well with lots of food stations and a live band. It was a great evening. The breakfast is excellent- again lots of choice from a buffet (served in an air-conditioned room!) and also an à la carte menu with delicious options. We loved going to Sunrise Yoga which I am missing so much this week. The lady who taught this every morning was honestly fantastic and I think the combination of that and the fact that you are practising yoga in an overwater hut so the sounds of the sea and the sun rising….well, not sure I can replicate that again anytime soon! The Spa is fabulous and we enjoyed a few treatments there and were so well looked after by the fantastic therapists. The underwater spa room is magical - I could have been down there for ages watching all the sea life swimming by. I could go on and on…. The island as I say is pure magic and it certainly feels that way at night with all the flame torches, candles and lighting. Sitting in the Sundeck Bar where the water is lit up at night watching all the reef sharks swimming by was a real highlight for us! Loved the fact too that it all felt so relaxed and whilst you could dress up for dinner if you wanted, it wasn’t necessary. We cannot thank you enough for making our 20th wedding anniversary holiday so special and will definitely be planning a return next year! Thank you for all your hard work and for creating a place as special as Huvafen Fushi."

"We were very pleased with our vacation from start to finish. The island is small and very cozy. The food was excellent, everything was delicious. The villa was perfect - the best among those we have been to. The island is unlikely to appeal to families with children, but it's perfect for couples. The gym was a bit disappointing, as it's small and poorly equipped, but that's probably the case with the most resorts in the Maldives. Special shout out to our butler Juma."
