PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into Baa Atoll, one of the Maldives' most ecologically protected atolls and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Milaidhoo Maldives makes a case for restraint at a moment when the archipelago's resort architecture has trended toward maximalist spectacle. The aerial view tells the story plainly: 50 villas arranged in a gentle arc of overwater structures and island bungalows, their thatched roofs drawing from traditional Maldivian dhivehi building vocabulary rather than reaching for imported modernist gestures. The result is a property whose massing suggests a village that grew organically rather than a resort imposed on an atoll. Interiors by Singapore-based designer Yuji Yamazaki work within that same logic of careful calibration. Pitched timber ceilings with exposed rafters run through every villa category, the warm grain of the wood set against white-rendered walls and wide-plank pale oak flooring. Bed throws and scatter cushions introduce the one deliberate jolt of colour — fuchsia ikat stripes in some villas, layered purple and amber wovens in others — grounding what might otherwise feel too neutral. The circular restaurant, its conical roof supported by a ring of folding timber-framed doors that open entirely to the deck and the lagoon beyond, deploys white-painted ceiling boarding and rattan pendant lights to achieve an atmosphere closer to a well-loved beach pavilion than a formal dining room. The communal infinity pool, edged in green-toned mosaic tile, extends the lagoon's own palette without competing with it.

About

Milaidhoo Maldives is a boutique luxury resort in the Baa Atoll UNESCO biosphere reserve, close to Hanifaru Bay, 126km north west of Male. It's perfect for nature lovers as its own coral reef, which completely circles the island, is a protected area and noted as an outstanding snorkelling and diving site in its own right. The tiny beautiful island, abundant with tropical greenery, measures just 300 mby 180m and is fringed by white soft deep sand beaches. Designed for couples and honeymooners, Milaidhoo welcomes guests aged nine and above. Offering barefoot informality, each of the 50 spacious air-conditioned villas has its own private freshwater pool on the sundeck and opens up 180 degrees to allow the natural beauty of the island into the villa. Clever design ensures all villas have ocean views. The custom-made furnishings and thoughtful designs are Maldivian inspired, from natural wooden floor to the thatched roof all made by master craftsmen specifically for Milaidhoo. An island host is on hand to ensure every detail of the stay is perfect, from arranging spa appointments and excursions to ensuring the private wine fridge in the villa is stocked with the guest's personal favorites. The room rate includes breakfast as well as wi-fi, laundry, kayaking, use of snorkelling equipment and in-villa treats such as a bottle of champagne and tropical fruit basket on arrival as well as a daily evening turn-down with a gourmet gift from chef. The three restaurants and two bars are designed to appeal to the senses, offering outstanding dining in wonderfully informal settings. No shoes are required. Food lovers will enjoy the Milaidhoo Gourmet Plan, which is a dine-around meal plan offering daily breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as international and premium brands of spirits, beers and cocktails from a selection as well as fresh juices, soft drinks, mineral water, teas, coffees, milkshakes and smoothies and a premium selection of wines, hand-picked by the sommelier all day long. The over-water spa has four treatment suites and complimentary yoga and meditation classes take place in the open air over-water pavilion. For romantics, Milaidhoo is the perfect choice: from candlelit dinners to scented baths, from flower petal bedecked beds to the perfect place to say "I do'. Sports activities include sailing, catamarans, kayaks, a 24-hour gym, yacht trips, dolphin cruises, whale shark spotting, manta ray watching, conservation activities with the resident marine biologist, fishing, diving, snorkelling, and an open-air infinity pool. Milaidhoo is reached by a scenic 35-minute seaplane ride from Male International Airport. Airport transfers are provided by the hotel at an extra charge. The transfer process is smooth and easy with the resort's representative meeting each guest at the airport and guiding them to the private lounge where they can rest and recharge to await their transfer.

Milaidhoo Maldives Reviews

"We have recently returned from our second stay at Milaidhoo. It's our favourite of the 12 resorts we have stayed at and ticks all the boxes for us. The villas are very spacious and private. They are carefully thought out and everything works as it should. The beach has soft white sand and the snorkelling is excellent and easily accessible. The food is delicious and the venues are genuinely different from one another rather than the same thing a few feet down the beach. All the staff, without exception, are highly trained and friendly. There's a very good selection of wines etc, and the white is served nice and cold. However, the absolute highlight for me was the yoga with Jonathan in an air conditioned pavillion. I am not particularly experienced but, besides the daily complementary classes, I also took private classes on both trips as I learnt so much from him. He is an excellent teacher and really focuses on technique so you can improve without injuring yourself. He also has a sense of humour which makes it fun. Of course yoga isn't for everyone but if you want to try it out or to improve then I can't recommend Jonathan highly enough. My husband had 2 cookery lessons with Janaka which he loved and he can now make fantastic curry, risotto and steak. We were going to keep trying different islands until we found the ideal one but we have stopped searching now that we have found Milaidhoo. We also tried Nautilus which I think is owned by the same person, but we preferred Milaidhoo."
