PB hotel design editorial

Two private islands in the Dhaalu Atoll, connected by wooden jetties that extend across lagoon water shifting between jade and cobalt, form the physical premise of Niyama Private Islands Maldives — a property that has always understood the archipelago's over-water villa typology as something to be refined rather than simply repeated. The resort, which sits roughly 45 minutes by seaplane south of Malé, spreads across the islands of Chill and Play, each with a distinct character: the former quieter, the latter anchored around the entertainment facilities and the subterranean nightclub, Subsix, suspended six metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean. The interiors across the 134 pavilions and villas carry a tropical modernist sensibility — dark-stained timber ceiling panels, wide-plank hardwood floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that dissolve the boundary between bedroom and ocean. The coral-motif etched glass panels visible as room dividers in several villa categories introduce a local material reference without tipping into the decorative excess that compromises many Maldivian properties. The fine-dining restaurant, by contrast, takes a sharper approach: black polished-granite floors, floor-to-ceiling steel-framed glazing, and a sculptural bar clad in brushed metallic relief, the effect closer to a contemporary European dining room than a beach pavilion. The main pool pavilion, visible from above, sits behind a deep thatch-roofed main building whose vernacular silhouette grounds the whole composition in its setting.

"Well this resort is right up there ! We are extensive travellers and the Niyama experience must be on your bucket list . We had an over water villa , with water deep enough to swim in ,while admiring the marine life . Points to note , as we were a couple , best to avoid the childrens holidays as it can be busy around the main pool with children. However that said you can find a quieter spot as the islands are big enough to loose yourself, possibly on the bikes ! The hotel could benefit from a small Adult only area on one of the beaches . The dining experience is very good with plenty of variety for a longer break , we had 11 nights . We would recommend the food and drinks all in package ,although it seems expensive at first , it is definitely to way to do it and not worry about the dollars . A shout out to some staff , who were all very attentive and helpful, YouKay (UK), Boni , Sigi and all the restaurant managers particularly the manager of Tribal. Finally it is along way to get there but worth it, but if you are visiting the Maldives this is definitely one to go to !! Chris and Julie"

"Where do I start....?! The staff here must be the first to talk about. I have travelled widely and these are the most hard working, professional, welcoming, warmest bunch I have ever met. We received a flawless service and they are the reason our holiday has been so memorable. So thank you all of you! I wish I could mention all of you but you are so many. Special thanks to Sigi, Rashe, Dewa, Putu, Hussain, Kofi, Brian and of course our point of contact for our stay - Khassu. After hours of trawling through the countless resorts in the Maldives, I settled on this one... An island not too big, not too small, website looked good - beautiful photos, the selection of restaurants for the size of the island looked good too. I didn't want to be eating in the same restaurant each night for 10 nights, I wanted to relax but not be bored. So Niyama seemed to fit the bill. Obviously a holiday to the Maldives is expensive for the average Joe so picking a holiday is always a gamble... Was I going to be disappointed....? The answer is absolutely NOT! I could run through details of the restaurants, describe the island, the villa, the bars but my descriptions and superlatives would take far too long and would be unnecessary because in a nutshell.... This idyllic island is perfection. My advice: You don't need a shortlist of places to stay in the Maldives - just go to Niyama."

"Absolutely stunning. the Staff members are all so welcoming, friendly and helpful and we will miss our thakuru! The food is some of the best we have ever eaten, it would be impossible to choose a favourite meal. Will miss pressing a button and the electric curtains opening to the most beautiful view, and watching the sunset at surf shack. gutted to be home!"
