PB hotel design editorial

Two private islands in the Dhaalu Atoll, connected by wooden jetties that extend across lagoon water shifting between jade and cobalt, form the physical premise of Niyama Private Islands Maldives — a property that has always understood the archipelago's over-water villa typology as something to be refined rather than simply repeated. The resort, which sits roughly 45 minutes by seaplane south of Malé, spreads across the islands of Chill and Play, each with a distinct character: the former quieter, the latter anchored around the entertainment facilities and the subterranean nightclub, Subsix, suspended six metres below the surface of the Indian Ocean. The interiors across the 134 pavilions and villas carry a tropical modernist sensibility — dark-stained timber ceiling panels, wide-plank hardwood floors, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that dissolve the boundary between bedroom and ocean. The coral-motif etched glass panels visible as room dividers in several villa categories introduce a local material reference without tipping into the decorative excess that compromises many Maldivian properties. The fine-dining restaurant, by contrast, takes a sharper approach: black polished-granite floors, floor-to-ceiling steel-framed glazing, and a sculptural bar clad in brushed metallic relief, the effect closer to a contemporary European dining room than a beach pavilion. The main pool pavilion, visible from above, sits behind a deep thatch-roofed main building whose vernacular silhouette grounds the whole composition in its setting.

"We recently had the pleasure of staying at the resort, and the absolute highlight of our trip was the tennis lessons our daughter, Eva, had with Patrick. Eva is a great young professional player (she is 12). You can see it from her Instagram @evangelinatennis. She is the 1st racket in Russia in her age and has recently won OpenSuper Auray (the most prestigious tournament in her age). Each session with Patrick was highly productive, structured, and challenging. We saw a noticeable boost in Eva’s confidence and court presence after lessons. Having a coach of this high caliber at the resort elevates the entire vacation experience. We are already planning our next stay, and we hope Patrick will be in Niyama so Eva can continue her training here. We can recommend Patrick to any resort guests looking to improve their game!""

"There is something truly special about Niyama that sets it apart from other luxury resorts in the Maldives. From the moment you step onto the island, a sense of serenity washes over you. Surrounded by lush tropical jungle and pristine white beaches, you’re immediately invited to slow down, unwind and simply enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. Having stayed at Niyama many times, we still can’t decide whether we prefer the overwater villas or the beach villas—both are exceptional, and the choice really comes down to personal preference. The beach villas offer stunning open-air bathrooms and direct access to the beach, while the overwater villas provide a magical experience that is difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself. If possible, spending part of your stay in each is the perfect way to enjoy the best of both worlds. Every villa comes with a Takura (butler) who ensures your stay is seamless from check-in to departure. For the past several visits, we have been fortunate to have Ammi as our Takura. He is exceptional—professional, attentive and always ready to help with a genuine smile. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and he consistently goes above and beyond to make every stay unforgettable. Each villa is equipped with bicycles, making it a pleasure to explore the islands, which are surprisingly large by Maldivian standards. For those who prefer not to cycle, buggies are always available and arrive promptly whenever needed. The dining at Niyama is outstanding across every venue, but Nest deserves a special mention. Set high amongst the trees, this spectacular treehouse restaurant serves exquisite Asian cuisine in one of the most unique and memorable settings you’ll find anywhere in the Maldives. It is an experience not to be missed. The surf is what draws us back to Niyama, year after year, the opportunity to surf uncrowded warm water waves in a tropical paradise is a rare thing. Whether you’re an experienced surfer or simply enjoy watching from the shore, the waves are a defining part of the Niyama experience and one of the many reasons this resort remains unlike anywhere else. We’ve been fortunate enough to visit many luxury resorts, yet Niyama is the one that continues to draw us back. Its unique blend of natural beauty, exceptional service, world-class dining and incredible surf makes it a place we never want to leave—and are always planning to return to."

"Our stay at the resort was truly unforgettable, and a huge part of that was because of the amazing staff who made us feel so welcomed every day. A very special thank you to Ibrahim, the ice cream attendant. He was incredibly kind, friendly, and genuinely made our island experience so much more special. He brought us fresh coconuts, encouraged us to try different ice cream flavors, and always made sure we were enjoying ourselves. He even collected beautiful seashells from the beach for us, which was such a thoughtful gesture. Honestly, Ibrahim was one of the best people we met on the island — I would happily come back just to see him again! 🤍 Another wonderful person was Lia, the chef at the restaurant. She made us feel comfortable from the first moment, as if we had known her for years. Her cooking was absolutely amazing and every meal she prepared was delicious. We also loved Same, our waitress. She always greeted us with a warm smile, and seeing her instantly brightened our day. She was so pleasant to talk to, and we truly enjoyed every interaction with her. A big thank you as well to the Egyptian chef Saeed. Whenever we requested something, he always did his best to make it happen. If it was not possible at that moment, he would remember and prepare it for us the next day. He was kind, cheerful, and a wonderful example of the generosity and hospitality Arabs are known for. 🤍 Finally, our butler Imthy deserves special recognition. He helped us with all our reservations, recommended the best activities and places to visit, and was always there whenever we needed anything. He made everything easy and stress-free for us, and his service was truly five-star in every sense. Thank you to the entire team for making our stay so memorable. We left with beautiful memories and would love to return again in the future."
