PB hotel design editorial

A narrow coral island in Lhaviyani Atoll, barely half a kilometre wide at its broadest point, sets the governing logic for Six Senses Kanuhura — a resort where the geometry of the land determines everything, from the arc of beach villas threading through coconut palms to the line of overwater bungalows extending into the lagoon on both flanks. The aerial view confirms what the interiors suggest: this is a property that treats its island as a living document rather than a blank site, the dense interior vegetation preserved and the structures kept low and thatched to avoid competing with the canopy. The interiors move between two registers: the beach villas carry a warm, artisanal domesticity, with exposed timber ceiling beams, white lime-rendered walls hung with draped linen canopies above the beds, wide-plank timber floors, and rattan pendant lighting that shifts the mood toward craft rather than resort polish. Restaurant spaces open under steeply pitched wood-lined gable roofs — the kind of volume that draws heat upward — furnished with cane-backed chairs, bleached timber communal tables, and a fireplace surround in raw plaster that anchors the space in something closer to a Mediterranean farmhouse than a tropical hotel. A separate evening terrace, more architecturally resolved, uses a cantilevered flat roof over travertine paving to frame an infinity pool and an open ocean horizon at dusk — a deliberate tonal counterpoint to the thatched vernacular elsewhere on the island.

"Six Senses Kanuhura is undeniably stunning. Set on one of the most pristine islands, the natural beauty of this place is hard to beat, crystal clear lagoons, powdery white sand, and incredible marine life right at your doorstep. The standout highlights of our stay were the experiences on offer. From snorkelling and water sports to the lunch at Drift which is a small island excursion, Six Senses does a wonderful job of connecting guests with the natural environment around them. The spa is also a lovely retreat and very much in line with the brand's wellness ethos. The resort has a relaxed, barefoot luxury feel which will appeal to those looking to truly switch off and unwind. The staff are amazing and very friendly, we would especially like to give a special mention to Nirushi and Zaha, whose warmth and attentiveness made a real difference to our stay. Overall, a beautiful place to experience the Maldives!"

"The place is wonderful scenery, food, activities and it’s all driven by great staff! Unfortunatly the management does not respect people’s time and money! This was evident as we had to spend a night in Male as we missed the sea plane in with no apology from management! In addition we were told we would leave the final day at 11:30 am with an airplane waiting time exceeding 4 hours!! A full day wasted!! Plus the value for money is not worth it!! You spend about $ 2,000/ day minimum with quality of a $600-800 /day! It lost its “boutique” quality and attention to tailored guest experience and is more cruise ship or packages trip feel! Very unfortunate! Especially that there are many alternatives!"

"We have recently returned from our second visit to beautiful Six Senses Kanuhura. Everything was just perfect, from the warm and welcoming reception when you arrive by seaplane, to the beauty of the island, the soft powdery sand, the colour of the sea - every shade of blue you can imagine- the choice of restaurants and superb quality of the food, the cleanliness and standard of the rooms - we had a beach villa with pool, well worth the upgrade-, the snorkeling, saw lots of turtles rays and sharks, and last but not least the service provided by our fantastic GEM Shifu, there to greet us every morning and evening and help with anything we needed, Shifu you were amazing! All of the team there will provide you with an exceptional level of service. A big shout out also to the lovely lady in the ice cream bar - we so enjoyed getting our ice creams everyday and having a friendly chat. We have been to quite a few resorts in the Maldives but Six Senses get it spot on. Missing it already and we will certainly return. Such an amazing place, very special indeed."

"Our stay at Six Senses Kanuhura was absolutely incredible from start to finish. The private villa with the overwater pool was stunning — waking up to endless ocean views and stepping straight into the water felt like a dream. The hospitality was truly next level. Every staff member was warm, attentive, and went above and beyond to make us feel special throughout our stay. A huge thank you to Zaha, our guest experience manager, who made everything seamless and personalized. Zaha was thoughtful, responsive, and made sure every detail of our trip was perfect. We also loved the healthy food options available across the resort. There were so many fresh, delicious choices that still felt indulgent while fitting a wellness-focused lifestyle. One of the things we appreciated most was how sustainable the resort is. It is clear that Six Senses Kanuhura genuinely cares about the environment and has thoughtfully incorporated sustainability into the guest experience without compromising luxury. This was easily one of the better resort experiences we have ever had, and we cannot wait to come back."
