At a glance

A Maldives resort where island topography governs design, from thatched villas to preserved coconut palms.

Best for: Architects and travelers who read buildings

Highlights:

  • Island geometry dictates villa placement and overwater bungalow layout
  • Interiors split between artisanal beach villas and Mediterranean-farmhouse restaurants
  • Native vegetation preserved; structures kept low beneath canopy

PB hotel design editorial

A narrow coral island in Lhaviyani Atoll, barely half a kilometre wide at its broadest point, sets the governing logic for Six Senses Kanuhura — a resort where the geometry of the land determines everything, from the arc of beach villas threading through coconut palms to the line of overwater bungalows extending into the lagoon on both flanks. The aerial view confirms what the interiors suggest: this is a property that treats its island as a living document rather than a blank site, the dense interior vegetation preserved and the structures kept low and thatched to avoid competing with the canopy. The interiors move between two registers: the beach villas carry a warm, artisanal domesticity, with exposed timber ceiling beams, white lime-rendered walls hung with draped linen canopies above the beds, wide-plank timber floors, and rattan pendant lighting that shifts the mood toward craft rather than resort polish. Restaurant spaces open under steeply pitched wood-lined gable roofs — the kind of volume that draws heat upward — furnished with cane-backed chairs, bleached timber communal tables, and a fireplace surround in raw plaster that anchors the space in something closer to a Mediterranean farmhouse than a tropical hotel. A separate evening terrace, more architecturally resolved, uses a cantilevered flat roof over travertine paving to frame an infinity pool and an open ocean horizon at dusk — a deliberate tonal counterpoint to the thatched vernacular elsewhere on the island.

"Our stay at Six Senses Laamu was truly one of the best experiences of our lives. From the moment we landed, everything was flawlessly organized. We were welcomed right at the airport, and the lounge is a wonderful touch that makes the journey feel effortless from the very beginning. What impressed us the most was the genuine hospitality of the entire team. Everyone was incredibly kind, attentive, and always willing to help, making us feel genuinely welcomed throughout our stay. A very special thank you to our GEM, Sameeh, who took care of every single detail to ensure our stay was absolutely perfect. His thoughtfulness, professionalism, and warm personality made all the difference. We stayed in an overwater villa, and it exceeded every expectation. The private pool was amazing, always at the perfect temperature, and the views were breathtaking. One of the most unforgettable parts was watching the abundant marine life right from our villa. It’s clear that Six Senses is deeply committed to protecting and preserving the natural environment. The experiences offered by the resort are equally exceptional. The snorkeling safari gave us the chance to see countless sea turtles, and swimming with the sharks was an unforgettable experience. Having a marine biologist with us made everything even more special, as they shared fascinating information about the wildlife while ensuring everyone felt safe and comfortable. Another highlight was the private island picnic, which was beautifully organized and truly unique. Experiences like these make Six Senses Laamu so much more than just a luxury resort—they create memories that will last a lifetime. We left with unforgettable memories and cannot wait to return. Thank you to the entire Six Senses Laamu team for such an extraordinary stay."

"Our 5-night honeymoon at Six Senses Kanuhura was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived until the day we left, we were treated with a level of warmth and hospitality that exceeded every expectation. The entire experience was beyond our wildest imagination, and it’s safe to say we’ve been completely spoiled for life. What impressed us most from day one was the resort’s remarkable attention to detail. Every member of the team seemed to know our names, knew we were celebrating our honeymoon, and went out of their way every single day to make us feel special. It felt incredibly personal, and that level of genuine hospitality is what truly sets Six Senses Kanuhura apart. Throughout our stay, we were continually surprised by thoughtful gestures that made our honeymoon even more memorable. We were welcomed with champagne and honeymoon treats, received beautiful souvenirs to remember our stay, and were delighted by special honeymoon cakes and desserts prepared for us. Even the smallest details, such as relaxing face masks, carefully selected teas, and other personalized touches left in our villa, made us feel genuinely cared for. These weren’t just luxurious amenities, they were heartfelt gestures that made us feel celebrated every single day. A very special thank you goes to our Guest Experience Manager, Sameeh, who made our honeymoon unforgettable. He took care of every detail throughout our stay, curating and booking the best dining experiences and activities while always checking in to ensure everything was perfect. Thanks to him, everything was seamless, allowing us to simply relax and enjoy every moment of our honeymoon. During our stay, we spent two nights in the Beach Villa with Pool followed by three nights in the Overwater Villa. Both villas were absolutely stunning, beautifully designed, incredibly spacious, and equipped with everything we could have needed. Having direct access to the beach and lagoon from our villas made every sunrise and sunset feel magical. Our only minor criticism was that the water pressure in the overwater villa’s bathroom was a little weak, but this was a very small issue in what was otherwise a flawless stay. We opted for the half-board package, which included daily breakfast at The Market and dinner at each of the four restaurants on the main island. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety of cuisines and dining experiences available. Our favorite evenings were spent at The Market, dining on the beach with live music playing in the background. The combination of exceptional food, the ocean breeze, and the relaxed atmosphere made those dinners truly unforgettable. The activities and experiences were equally memorable. We joined the complimentary house reef snorkeling excursion three times and were amazed by the vibrant marine life each time. We saw countless colorful fish and were fortunate enough to spot nurse sharks, making every trip into the water exciting and unforgettable. During the sunset fishing cruise, we were also lucky enough to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat, creating one of the most magical moments of our honeymoon. The wellness facilities were another highlight of our stay. We received a complimentary 60-minute spa treatment and also enjoyed complimentary access to the steam room, sauna, and ice bath facilities. Every aspect of the spa experience was world-class and perfectly complemented the peaceful atmosphere of the island. It was the perfect way to relax and unwind together. One of the things we appreciated most was the resort’s unique barefoot philosophy. Upon arrival, we were invited to remove our shoes and store them away, embracing barefoot luxury for the remainder of our stay. Spending an entire week barefoot while surrounded by pristine beaches and lush tropical nature was surprisingly freeing and allowed us to disconnect completely from everyday life. We also enjoyed learning about the resort’s sustainability initiatives. It was inspiring to see how seriously Six Senses is committed to protecting the environment while still delivering an uncompromising luxury experience. Their efforts gave us a new appreciation for sustainable tourism and left us with plenty of food for thought long after we returned home. Finally, we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful Nepalese team members at the resort, especially Sushil, Puskar, and the many others we had the pleasure of meeting during our stay. As fellow Nepalese, they made us feel at home from the very beginning. Their warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality made us feel less like guests and more like family. We sincerely wish each of them nothing but happiness and success in life. This was far more than just a holiday, it was the honeymoon of our dreams. The resort exceeded our expectations in every possible way, not only because of its breathtaking natural beauty and luxurious facilities, but because of the incredible people who brought the resort to life. To everyone at Six Senses Kanuhura, thank you for creating memories that we will cherish forever. We left with immense gratitude, unforgettable memories, and the feeling that we’ve truly been spoiled for life. We cannot wait to return one day."

"We had the most amazing family vacation. Beautiful place, amazing atmosphere and lots of relaxation. The most amazing experience, though, was our GEM, Mua, who made the stay memorable in way we - and especially our kids - will never forget. Thank you so much, Mua, and the rest of the staff."
