Highlights:

  • Island geometry dictates villa placement and overwater bungalow layout

PB hotel design editorial

A narrow coral island in Lhaviyani Atoll, barely half a kilometre wide at its broadest point, sets the governing logic for Six Senses Kanuhura — a resort where the geometry of the land determines everything, from the arc of beach villas threading through coconut palms to the line of overwater bungalows extending into the lagoon on both flanks. The aerial view confirms what the interiors suggest: this is a property that treats its island as a living document rather than a blank site, the dense interior vegetation preserved and the structures kept low and thatched to avoid competing with the canopy. The interiors move between two registers: the beach villas carry a warm, artisanal domesticity, with exposed timber ceiling beams, white lime-rendered walls hung with draped linen canopies above the beds, wide-plank timber floors, and rattan pendant lighting that shifts the mood toward craft rather than resort polish. Restaurant spaces open under steeply pitched wood-lined gable roofs — the kind of volume that draws heat upward — furnished with cane-backed chairs, bleached timber communal tables, and a fireplace surround in raw plaster that anchors the space in something closer to a Mediterranean farmhouse than a tropical hotel. A separate evening terrace, more architecturally resolved, uses a cantilevered flat roof over travertine paving to frame an infinity pool and an open ocean horizon at dusk — a deliberate tonal counterpoint to the thatched vernacular elsewhere on the island.

"My unforgettable stay at Six Senses Kanuhura was truly an amazing and relaxing holiday experience. Spending 5 beautiful nights surrounded by crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches felt like paradise. The villa was exceptional, perfectly positioned between the beach and breathtaking sea views, creating the most peaceful atmosphere every single day. The service was outstanding from arrival to departure, and every team member was warm, friendly, and welcoming. The food experience was equally incredible, with delicious dishes and wonderful dining moments throughout the stay. A very special thanks to GEM Sameehu , who made the experience even more memorable with genuine care and excellent hospitality. The island itself was stunning — lush, green, beautifully maintained, and incredibly clean. The white sandy beaches and turquoise lagoon created a picture-perfect escape that will always remain in my heart. Everything was simply wonderful, and I cannot wait to return again to this beautiful paradise"

"We had an unforgettable and fabulous four-night stay at Six Senses Kanuhura. We absolutely loved the rustic yet extremely comfortable and luxurious vibe of the resort, which also has a strong commitment to sustainability. Every corner of the resort is beautifully designed to blend seamlessly into the tropical Maldivian landscape, offering breathtaking views all around. Both the water villas and beach villas are generously spacious and very well appointed. We were travelling with an infant and a young child, and had informed the resort team well in advance about arrangements for Indian food for all their meals. This was taken care of exceptionally well. The food provided was delicious — even better than what we would find back in India. We are truly thankful to the team for ensuring our kids were so well looked after, allowing us to completely relax and enjoy our time. As a couple, we also had an amazing time lounging around the island, enjoying the large private pools at the villa, and experiencing the rejuvenating spa sessions at the Six Senses Spa. It was also wonderful to try different cuisines at their Spanish, Japanese, and Italian restaurants. Coming to the best part of the resort — the TEAM! As Indians, it is always comforting to find fellow Indians as part of the resort staff. Vel, the manager at The Market, along with Nanda and Raja, were extremely caring and accommodating to all our needs. We had many delightful conversations with Vel. Special mention as well to the Maldivian, Indonesian, and Sri Lankan staff members, who truly made us feel at home. They were proactive in anticipating our needs, incredibly prompt with their service, and always kind and helpful. Our long conversations with Sameeh at Sip & Sand will definitely be missed. A big thank you to Chef Velu for preparing delicious Indian meals for the kids throughout our stay. This review would be incomplete without mentioning our GEM — Sameeh! Calm, patient, attentive, detail-oriented, and caring are just a few adjectives that perfectly describe him. He always seemed exceptionally well prepared to handle every situation. We especially want to mention one instance when we were having our spa treatment and our little baby started crying. Sameeh showed incredible presence of mind by arranging buggy rides for the baby, eventually pacifying her and gently putting her to sleep. It was such a reassuring and heartwarming feeling to know that we were in such experienced and capable hands. From coordinating with resorts in Male, arranging our early check-in and late check-out, organizing my wife’s birthday celebrations, ensuring punctuality with our kids’ meals, and so much more — I doubt our stay would have been as smooth and pleasant without Sameeh. We will truly miss him. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank GM Alicia for her leadership, warmth, and sense of ownership, all of which clearly reflect throughout the entire team and truly elevate the overall experience. We will deeply miss our time in paradise. Until next time!"

"I've stayed at a number of luxury properties, but Six Senses Kanuhura stood out for something that's harder to engineer than a beautiful resort: genuine care. It's the small details that set them apart. The turndown service included a calming herbal tea — a thoughtful touch that signals someone actually thought about how a guest feels at the end of the day. On my last morning, a bag for wet clothes was ready and waiting — a simple gesture, but one that showed real consideration for the practicalities of travel. These things don't happen by accident; they reflect a team that pays attention. The hospitality strikes a rare balance — warm and family-like without ever feeling intrusive. Every team member introduced themselves by name, the manager checked in personally to ensure everything was in order, and yet there was never a sense of being hovered over. They appear exactly when needed and give you space when you don't. A special mention for the dive team at Deep Blue Divers. As a first-time scuba diver, I was nervous. They were patient, encouraging, and never once made me feel pressured or talked down to. They made me feel completely at ease — and genuinely excited rather than afraid. That kind of guidance is rare and truly appreciated. I would recommend Six Senses Kanuhura without hesitation. Already hoping to return. Christine"

"We absolutely loved our stay at Six Senses Kanuhura for our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived, every single staff member made us feel genuinely welcome with their kindness and warm smiles. A very special thank you to our GEM, Lai, who was always there whenever we needed anything and continuously helped make our stay even more memorable. The breakfast buffet at The Market was truly heavenly. We loved the concept of being able to order dishes from the menu while also enjoying the buffet selection. Everything was fresh, high quality, and prepared exactly to our wishes. The restaurant staff constantly checked on us and made sure everything was perfect. Our favourite restaurants were definitely Bottega and Sip & Sand — both outstanding experiences with amazing food and atmosphere. Special thanks as well to Shahaadat for the impeccable room service twice a day and for keeping our villa absolutely beautiful throughout our stay. Six Senses Kanuhura made our honeymoon unforgettable, and we will always cherish the memories we created on this beautiful island. We definitely dream of revisiting."
