PB hotel design editorial

Laamu Atoll sits at the southernmost fringe of the Maldives' inhabited atolls, remote enough that reaching it requires either a domestic flight or a lengthy seaplane transfer from Malé — a geographic fact that shaped everything about how Six Senses Laamu was conceived. Opened in 2011 on Olhuveli Island, the property was developed with an unusually strong environmental conscience even by Six Senses standards, the brand having built its reputation around low-impact resort design in ecologically sensitive locations. The 97 villas — among them overwater structures extending from the island's reef edge on timber stilts — are built almost entirely from reclaimed and sustainable materials: sun-bleached wood, woven thatch, bamboo structural members left deliberately rough, and locally sourced coral stone lime plaster giving interior walls their chalky, handmade finish. Inside, the design resists the polished minimalism common to so many Indian Ocean resorts. Four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting hang beneath exposed bamboo rafter systems, dark hardwood floors warmed by acid-green and mustard cushioning that carries a relaxed, almost market-found energy rather than the studied neutrality of a designer palette. The open-sided restaurant pavilions — teak deck boards, seagrass pendant lights suspended from grey-painted timber columns, cushioned banquettes piled with lime-green bolsters — have the atmosphere of a well-loved beach house rather than a managed hospitality environment. The infinity pool terrace, fringed by coconut palms and striped daybeds, completes a property that treats material honesty as its primary design gesture.

"Six Senses Laamu is an amazing resort with everything you could imagine. Everything is extremely accommodating, and all sorts of activities and facilities are top-notch, just as you expected in a luxury, all-inclusive resort. Of course, the standards in the name set the expectation for your stay, especially in an amazing place like the Maldives. It’s definitely worth the money and the price you pay for it. For our villa, we stayed in the Sunset Villa with an in-pool, and the view is incredible, with a special scenic view of the sunset and especially early sunrise. Very much similar to the photos we see and expect to see once we get there. The indoor facilities of the Villa are top-notch, with a special outdoor shower that provides the perfect ambiance of an islandic lifestyle, which adds to the eco-conscious belief the resort has highlighted from the beginning. There's no doubt every Villa will meet your standard as long as your stay there is worthwhile. Besides the villa, we also dined at Leaf and Chill Bar, which are uniquely tailored to the tastes of the Maldives, especially the curated everyday menu that Six Senses has provided for their guests. My impression greatly reflects dining at Leaf Restaurant, which I highly recommend as a must-have experience when visiting this resort. All your taste and flavor will be worth the experience of dining there, and from the service to the Chef’s menu, it's no doubt a big factor in Six Senses Laamu's impression when staying there. However, one slight note I want to add is the communication/misunderstanding problem we personally experienced, since there was no heads-up before we started booking our flight that we realized the seaplane transfers are a central part of getting on and off the island. The executive team has contacted us only weeks before our flight was booked; therefore, we unfortunately have to cancel a night of our stay to get back on the mainland in time for our 7:30 am departure flight. I would strongly encourage you to communicate with the team IMMEDIATELY upon booking your stay so that no misunderstandings arise once you arrive. Another note is that we also missed our first dinner reservation because neither the Hotel nor the receptionist reminded us of the time difference. We, ourselves, are always the ones doing the initiative communication, so please pay more attention to talking with your guests, especially communicating/ updating them on the first night schedule/ time difference so that there won’t be any misunderstanding from the beginning. I want to note that our GEM staff member, Fahudh, is amazing at helping us in all areas, whether that's navigating around the resort, booking reservations, or providing all activities for our short stay at Six Senses Laamu. SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATION TO FAHUDH AND HIS KIND ASSISTANCE! All in all, we’ll come again for certain, and this is a trip worth making :)"

"Our family of five had the most incredible stay at Six Senses Laamu. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional and genuinely the best hospitality we’ve ever experienced. The snorkelling was absolutely breathtaking. The house reef is stunning and easily accessible, allowing us to snorkel straight from the resort. We were lucky enough to see turtles, reef sharks, and some of the most beautiful, vibrant coral we’ve ever seen. We also went on the Turtle Safari, which was an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of our trip. The food was another standout. Every meal was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared, with an incredible variety that made every dining experience something to look forward to. A special thank you to Noah, the Head of Food & Beverage, who was always around ensuring every guest had the best possible dining experience. His attention to detail and genuine care were evident throughout our stay. A huge thank you to our Guest Experience Manager, Janko, who truly made our holiday unforgettable. Nothing was ever too much to ask, and he went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. He even came snorkelling with us, making an already incredible experience even more memorable. His warmth, enthusiasm, and dedication was much appreciated. We would also like to give a special mention to Vino, Nathuf, Vikesh, Hawaree, and Ariba. They were all incredibly warm, friendly, and attentive, and we loved getting to know them throughout our stay. Their impeccable service and genuine kindness made us feel so welcome and at home. We also had an amazing experience with the Tropicsurf team. They were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate, making every surf session enjoyable and encouraging. Their positive energy and professionalism added another unforgettable element to our holiday. Six Senses Laamu is truly a paradise. Between the spectacular marine life, pristine house reef, incredible food, luxurious surroundings, and the genuinely caring staff, this was one of the best family holidays we’ve ever had. It’s rare to find a place where every single member of the team makes you feel so welcome, but that’s exactly what Six Senses Laamu does. We can’t wait to return and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable Maldivian experience."

"When we arrived, we were transported by a private seaplane and a private bus. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and perfect for taking photos. All of the staff members were incredibly engaging, welcoming, and friendly. The rooms were very well maintained and cleaned regularly. The resort was peaceful and quiet, making it a great place to relax. There were also many complimentary amenities available. The value was excellent, especially with the meal packages and other inclusions. My favourite staff members were Sam and Zameer (Kokky), who were both incredibly friendly and made our experience truly extraordinary. I would also like to thank Amir, who helped us at the airport with an issue involving our flights. I hope they can be considered for Employee of the Month! 😆 It’s impossible not to mention the amazing sea life. There was an abundance of turtles, rays, and colourful fish, which made the experience even more special. We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Six Senses Laamu, and we will definitely be returning!"
