Laamu Atoll sits at the southernmost fringe of the Maldives' inhabited atolls, remote enough that reaching it requires either a domestic flight or a lengthy seaplane transfer from Malé — a geographic fact that shaped everything about how Six Senses Laamu was conceived. Opened in 2011 on Olhuveli Island, the property was developed with an unusually strong environmental conscience even by Six Senses standards, the brand having built its reputation around low-impact resort design in ecologically sensitive locations. The 97 villas — among them overwater structures extending from the island's reef edge on timber stilts — are built almost entirely from reclaimed and sustainable materials: sun-bleached wood, woven thatch, bamboo structural members left deliberately rough, and locally sourced coral stone lime plaster giving interior walls their chalky, handmade finish. Inside, the design resists the polished minimalism common to so many Indian Ocean resorts. Four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting hang beneath exposed bamboo rafter systems, dark hardwood floors warmed by acid-green and mustard cushioning that carries a relaxed, almost market-found energy rather than the studied neutrality of a designer palette. The open-sided restaurant pavilions — teak deck boards, seagrass pendant lights suspended from grey-painted timber columns, cushioned banquettes piled with lime-green bolsters — have the atmosphere of a well-loved beach house rather than a managed hospitality environment. The infinity pool terrace, fringed by coconut palms and striped daybeds, completes a property that treats material honesty as its primary design gesture.

"Where do I even begin? Six Senses Laamu truly exceeded every expectation we had and then some. From the moment we arrived, everything felt intentional, starting with the warmest welcome and a level of service that felt effortless, yet truly personal. Our GEM, Masthooq, was one of a kind and made our stay so special. He was kind, attentive, and so thoughtful with our family, even organizing a beautiful private dinner at Leaf so we could comfortably dine with our children. Truly, the entire team here is incredible, so it's no surprise as to why TIME listed Six Senses Laamu as one of the World’s Greatest Places to visit in 2026. Our overwater villa quickly became our little sanctuary, filled with blissful music in the dreamiest setting. We enjoyed slow mornings in our villa with breakfast overlooking the endless Indian Ocean and some of the bluest water we've ever seen. We spent our days in the water, snorkeling in the amazing house reef, relaxing, and eating the most incredible food, while taking in the natural beauty of this stunning property. This trip quite literally altered my brain chemistry and set a new standard for our family’s future trips. We are already dreaming of the day we can return to this phenomenal place."

"What an amazing experience, out first time to the Maldives, would return in a heartbeat to this resort. Kim looked after us the whole time. You could never want for anything. The conservationists that take you out in the reef to see the wonders make it also. You never get bored of all the world class food choices. I could go on with the compliments…."

"Our experience at Six Senses Maldives was amazing, the entire team from kitchen staff, cleaning crew to our GEM Riq did an incredible job. Riq looked after us all week, organising our excursions, arranging meals and making sure everything ran smoothly. His attention to detail and friendly nature made our holiday completely stress-free. We hope to return one day soon!"
