PB hotel design editorial

Laamu Atoll sits at the southernmost fringe of the Maldives' inhabited atolls, remote enough that reaching it requires either a domestic flight or a lengthy seaplane transfer from Malé — a geographic fact that shaped everything about how Six Senses Laamu was conceived. Opened in 2011 on Olhuveli Island, the property was developed with an unusually strong environmental conscience even by Six Senses standards, the brand having built its reputation around low-impact resort design in ecologically sensitive locations. The 97 villas — among them overwater structures extending from the island's reef edge on timber stilts — are built almost entirely from reclaimed and sustainable materials: sun-bleached wood, woven thatch, bamboo structural members left deliberately rough, and locally sourced coral stone lime plaster giving interior walls their chalky, handmade finish. Inside, the design resists the polished minimalism common to so many Indian Ocean resorts. Four-poster beds draped in white mosquito netting hang beneath exposed bamboo rafter systems, dark hardwood floors warmed by acid-green and mustard cushioning that carries a relaxed, almost market-found energy rather than the studied neutrality of a designer palette. The open-sided restaurant pavilions — teak deck boards, seagrass pendant lights suspended from grey-painted timber columns, cushioned banquettes piled with lime-green bolsters — have the atmosphere of a well-loved beach house rather than a managed hospitality environment. The infinity pool terrace, fringed by coconut palms and striped daybeds, completes a property that treats material honesty as its primary design gesture.

"My wife and I decided to spend our honeymoon at Six Senses Laamu for 5 nights and it turned out to be a once in a lifetime experience. Right from the start, we were greeted warmly by our GEM, Vienne, who was in charge of making sure we had a great week. We were impressed by her attentiveness; from reserving sugarcane juice for us when we had a conflicting event to making sure we didn't miss the turtle hatching, she helped make our 5 star vacation into 6 stars. Speaking of turtles, one of the main draws of this resort was the conservation team focused on sustainability and protecting the wildlife. We saw so many species thanks to their efforts and enjoyed learning about their work. Overall, we were sad to check out the last day thanks to the hospitality of everyone. From seeing the same faces every breakfast (shoutout to Havari), to seeing nature all around us, it was a dream come true that we hope to revisit one day."

"We were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon at Six Senses Laamu and had the most incredible stay. What we loved most was the Six Senses philosophy and the way luxury is so beautifully connected with nature. Being surrounded by the ocean, incredible marine life and the natural environment made us feel even more present and grateful for such a special time. The team really made our stay unforgettable. Our GEM, Riq was always able to accommodate any request and made everything so easy throughout our holiday. A huge thank you to Kathu, Havari, Nathuf and Shahi from the F&B team, as well as Chefs Milan and Abi, Jakoo from in-villa dining and Kokki for a fantastic sustainability tour. We loved getting to know everyone and every day was made better by their warmth and hospitality. An unforgettable honeymoon in one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited. Thank you, Six Senses Laamu, we can't wait to come back!"

"We were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon at Six Senses Laamu, and it was everything we could have hoped for and more. What makes this place so special is the Six Senses Laamu philosophy. The luxury here feels deeply connected to nature, sustainability, wellness and the local environment, rather than manufactured or excessive. It is a truly unique kind of luxury: thoughtful, intentional and completely immersive. The incredible snorkeling and our constant connection with the ocean and natural surroundings made us feel even more present and grateful for such a special time together. We were also incredibly fortunate to get to know so many wonderful members of the team during our stay. Our GEM, Riq was exceptional, able to accommodate every request immediately and always with such warmth and ease. They were a truly lovely addition to our holiday and helped make every detail seamless. The F&B team were also outstanding. A special thank you to Kathu, Havari, Nathuf and Shahi, who each made our days that little bit better. Chefs Milan and Abi were incredible, creating so many memorable meals throughout our stay, while Jakoo from in-villa dining was always so thoughtful and welcoming. We also loved our sustainability tour with Kokki, which gave us an even greater appreciation for the island and the work being done to protect its beautiful natural environment. Beyond the beautiful villa and amenities, incredible food and breathtaking surroundings, it was the people who truly made our stay unforgettable. Each day was made better by getting to know the wonderful team, and by the end of our holiday, leaving felt genuinely difficult. Six Senses Laamu gave us the most magical start to married life. It is a place that encourages you to slow down, reconnect and appreciate the world around you, and we will forever be grateful for the memories we made there. We cannot wait to return."
