PB hotel design editorial

Kunfunadhoo Island in Baa Atoll was essentially untouched jungle when Sonu and Eva Shivdasani established Soneva Fushi here in 1995, and the founding philosophy — no news, no shoes, no stress — determined every material and structural decision that followed. The resort's architecture, developed in close collaboration with the Shivdasanis and executed largely through local craft rather than a single named architectural practice, drew deliberately from the Maldivian vernacular: thatch-and-timber roofs with steeply pitched profiles, rough-hewn driftwood columns, and lime-plastered walls left with the texture of their making. The aerial images reveal how lightly the overwater structures sit above the reef edge, their copper-patinated domed roofs and weathered timber decks arranged along sinuous boardwalks that follow the lagoon's contour rather than imposing a geometric plan. Inside, the villas carry the feeling of a craftsman's beach house assembled over decades rather than delivered by a contractor — gauze canopy beds on low teak platforms, trunk-style storage chests with hand-hammered hardware, and exposed ceiling fans turning slowly beneath raked log rafters. The overwater restaurant shown at sunset deploys the same palette: raw timber bench seating cushioned in lagoon-blue linen, pendant lanterns in amber glass, and a ceiling packed with cross-stacked log rounds that functions as both insulation and texture. With 67 villas spread across 1.4 kilometres of island, density is so low that the jungle largely swallows each structure, making the whole property feel discovered rather than designed.

Soneva Fushi Reviews

"We spent five nights at Soneva Fushi with our two boys (7 and 3), and it was everything we hoped it would be. Before arriving I wondered whether it could really live up to the reputation, but within the first day I understood why so many people return. The island is beautiful, but what impressed us most was how relaxed everything felt. There are no shoes, everyone gets around by bike, and after a day or two you genuinely slow down. Our kids absolutely loved The Den. We've stayed at quite a few luxury family resorts over the years and I honestly think it's the best kids' club we've come across. They were excited to go every day, which meant we could actually enjoy a bit of downtime ourselves. The person who really made our trip, though, was our Barefoot Butler, Miqdad. He was friendly, proactive and somehow always seemed to appear just when we needed something. He organised for us to plant a coconut tree during our stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and he also surprised our best friends with a birthday celebration on our final night. Our first experience in the Maldives could not have been more memorable, and Soneva Fushi played a huge part in that. We left with wonderful memories, feeling completely refreshed, and already talking about returning one day. Thank you to Miqdad and the entire Soneva team for making our stay so special. We cannot recommend Soneva Fushi highly enough."

"We have just returned from our seventh visit to Soneva Fushi since 2010 and thought we would take a moment to record and update our earlier comments on why this place remain so special to the Walker family in a few short sentences: ......a relatively large, single resort island, with unusually mature and lush vegetation, wild life, both airborne and at ground level, a place to get lost in a little in its maze of sandy pathways on your own bicycle; ......barefoot luxury in beautifully and originally designed villas and places to eat and relax in which melt into the jungle or the sea …. some of the public conveniences are so vast, so gloriously set in their own private open air gardens, that they have to be seen to be believed!) ......a wide variety of Michelin Star quality food, especially but not only Asian, served in rational sized amounts, catering to every possible taste and dietary preference, served in different ambiences across the island; ......many complementary experiences, with special privileges for returning guests, ranging from yoga, exercise and meditation classes, complementary Indian and Sri Lankan cooking lessons from their head chefs, and fascinating tours of their eco recycling centre, vegetable gardens, etc; ......lovely white sand beaches and translucent sea with surely some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world…. renascent populations of mantas, reef sharks and turtles, so many fish….all the colours of the rainbow, the best and most accessible house reefs of the Maldives I would think; ......just a lovely environment to relax in, or be very active if you wish, always some interesting people in residence, no dominant nationality and the staff always smiling with genuine goodwill, ever available but unobtrusive; Every two years or so we set foot back on Soneva Fushi a little anxious in case things might not quite as good, as it is difficult to imagine things getting any better….. and each time the family leaves, rested and reconnected with each other, with a renewed interest in our health, in what we eat, thinking we will be back again soon, as somehow Soneva, at least for us, never loses its freshness or its unique appeal.
