PB hotel design editorial

Kunfunadhoo Island in Baa Atoll was essentially untouched jungle when Sonu and Eva Shivdasani established Soneva Fushi here in 1995, and the founding philosophy — no news, no shoes, no stress — determined every material and structural decision that followed. The resort's architecture, developed in close collaboration with the Shivdasanis and executed largely through local craft rather than a single named architectural practice, drew deliberately from the Maldivian vernacular: thatch-and-timber roofs with steeply pitched profiles, rough-hewn driftwood columns, and lime-plastered walls left with the texture of their making. The aerial images reveal how lightly the overwater structures sit above the reef edge, their copper-patinated domed roofs and weathered timber decks arranged along sinuous boardwalks that follow the lagoon's contour rather than imposing a geometric plan. Inside, the villas carry the feeling of a craftsman's beach house assembled over decades rather than delivered by a contractor — gauze canopy beds on low teak platforms, trunk-style storage chests with hand-hammered hardware, and exposed ceiling fans turning slowly beneath raked log rafters. The overwater restaurant shown at sunset deploys the same palette: raw timber bench seating cushioned in lagoon-blue linen, pendant lanterns in amber glass, and a ceiling packed with cross-stacked log rounds that functions as both insulation and texture. With 67 villas spread across 1.4 kilometres of island, density is so low that the jungle largely swallows each structure, making the whole property feel discovered rather than designed.

"I have been to 5 other islands and this is by far the best one of them all. We stayed in villa 11 and there were 15 of us. The island itself is very lush, natural and has a charm about it you cannot describe until you stay here. Its not a modern, fancy tech island but rustic in the most beautiful way. The food was incredible, and each different restaurant we visited every night was out of this world, creating a new, special experience every time. We loved cycling the island on our bikes, it was like riding through Jurassic park with the noise of the birds and the lush trees and tropical plants. The sea was beautiful, crystal clear with great snorkelling from the out of the sea and out of the blue restaurants, plenty of black tip reef sharks late afternoon. Our villa was the best villa we have stayed in, huge outside areas, with a massive pool and our rooms were cleaned beautifully every morning with a nightly turndown service. However, what made this island and holiday the best was by far the incredible service we received throughout the whole time we were there. At breakfast the head chef comes over to you to for a friendly chat, not intrusive, just really nice, polite and warm, and the waiters and various chefs at each food area are so friendly and helpful, nothing you ask for is too much trouble, they will do anything for you that you request. Our barefoot butler, Choco, was incredible, making all the arrangements for our evening meals, organising lunch at our villa and bringing us lovely cocktails throughout the day - thank you Choco! The flying sauces restaurant was an amazing experience, a private table high up in the trees with the most incredible food, we were truly spoilt. We had a private cinema night under the stars with drinks and popcorn bought to us. I thought how can we beat that, until our last night when the staff had set up a private table with lanterns on the shore's edge with our favourite musician on the island, Shaam. The food, service and effort put into this was out of this world, and me and my family will never forget it. It was such a special evening and we cant thank you all enough! Our glasses were never empty and Shaam played some beautiful songs with his guitar. I really hope we come back one day. We 100% recommend this island. We didn't lift a finger all week, completely stress free, and with such a large group of 15 that is not an easy task but you absolutely nailed it Soneva Fushi! This is what dreams are made of. Thank you!"

"I love Soneva Fushi, the island and its people and have been coming for many years with my family , and stayed for several weeks every time. This time I started to see and feel subtle changes at the beginning, some not very nice information given by our butler, like new restrictive measures that disappointed us, or shocked us. Our past experiences were always welcoming and smooth. Some were resolved , others not, ammenities that were not included in the villa anymore, furniture disappearing (like the outdoor lovely robinson crusoe table and chairs, they were not in the villa in anymore ), less expert visitor therapists at Soneva Soul ( we were lucky to still find Hortensia , the lovely osteopath), an lot of insect spraying everywhere, local shop without any new items , changes in the quality of some food from the menu, i missed the bunnies, (ice cream shop open 24/7 and chocolates did not change and are still there not having this would be devastating, the childhood feeling of playfulness and being pampered with this is unforgettable). Days passed , the staff made us feel all right in spite of the changes, but we started noticing jungle work that was being in process , less and less vegetation every day , what was once a lovely authentic thick jungle is slowly becoming a thin forest full of holes, where you start to see plants artificially placed here and there , now you can see through the vegetations, and it is not as nice and remote and fresh as before. Without its jungle, which has made this island so different from the others, Soneva would be deprived of its magnetic soul. It has never been a plain "resort" to us, it s been a place on earth, it still is, full of character with the most spectacular design, care and service, created from zero by visioners Sonu and Eva with a completely different concept which we shared and valued as guests, which made Soneva Fushi what has been all these years. I understand the new management intention might be to clean, but it s important to keep sustainability in mind, and the whole character and intention of the place, keep up with the non invasive quality and nature of the materials, because this is what make us guests, find it different and want to go back every year. I hope they stop here with the " cleaning" of the jungle, they might still be on time, if they go on destroying the jungle they will destroy Soneva uniqueness and it will become merely one of the many island hotels in Maldives, manicured, fake, not sustainable, one more, without soul or personality. Whoever owns this place should respect its essence, tha nature and of course its people, Soneva staff, one of the most amazing we've ever experienced. Thank you Soneva, Sonu and Eva, for all the magic, of all these years, all the memories, I really hope the new people in charge treat the island and its people and its trees and fauna with the love they deserve. Hope to be able to keep coming back to the Soneva Fushi I know and love."

"Positives Hospitality Food Pool villa set up/ layout Barefoot Butlers ( Hassan, you were amazing) Responsiveness to requests (nothing was too much trouble). Cleanliness Negatives Confusing resort layout (and quite a large resort) lacked beach views from villa a few niggles (dim lighting, a/c not sufficient) A little lack of privacy between rooms within villa complex. Very pleasant stay, looked after us well."
