PB hotel design editorial

From the air, the island that houses Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa in North Malé Atoll presents as something between a natural formation and a carefully considered composition — a teardrop of dense coconut palm canopy ringed by white sand, with a chain of water villas extending from its eastern shore like a necklace laid across the lagoon. That aerial geometry, visible in the images, shapes the entire spatial logic of the property: beach villas set back within the vegetation, overwater villas cantilevered above the reef flat, and a curved infinity pool anchoring the southern tip where the island meets open ocean. The interiors work a register that has become the Taj group's tropical signature — pitched roofs with exposed timber trusses, wide-plank dark hardwood floors softened by jute rugs, rattan and woven furniture in warm tobacco tones, and sliding timber-framed glass walls that dissolve the boundary between room and deck. Bed linens carry delicate botanical embroidery in sage green and aqua, colour-keyed to the lagoon itself. The overwater villas trade the hardwood floors of the beach units for dark slate tile, keeping the atmosphere cooler and more spare. At the outdoor restaurant, weathered teak decking and low hurricane lanterns arranged at floor level give evening dining the atmosphere of something improvised rather than staged — a considered informality that the Taj properties in the Maldives have long understood to be the point.

"I absolutely loved this hotel and was truly impressed by the staff. 🤍 Everyone on the island — from housekeeping to the bartenders, lifeguards, and reception — plays a huge role in making this place so special and welcoming. The highlight of our stay was the location of our water villa. It was beautiful, spotless, and very well maintained, with cleaning twice a day and a regularly restocked minibar. The staff were always kind, polite, and attentive. Our villa had direct access to a pristine reef, and the hotel provides snorkelling masks, allowing us to enjoy the stunning coral and colourful fish right from the villa. I would also like to give special mention to Jhowana and Ibrahim at the bar. Jhowana, in particular, deserves special mention — she has an incredible ability to know exactly which cocktail will suit each guest. She is warm, positive, and above all, a true professional. Having people like her on the team makes the entire experience even more relaxing and enjoyable. 😊 I highly recommend this hotel — a perfect choice for a relaxing holiday. 10/10."

"Your staff are wonderful, from the speedboat trip, greeting and escort by a hostess to wonderful meals and lovely water bungalow room. Rasel, who looked after our room did a great job, it was always immaculate with everything we could possible want provided. His towel animals were great fun! The ground keeping staff worked very hard, the grounds were always tidy, well maintained and raked. Bar staff were good and we enjoyed the singer and guitarist, she has a wonderful voice. The restaurant service was really special, so helpful, efficient and friendly and the huge choice was excellent, both in taste and presentation. We appreciated the loan of the snorkelling gear, too heavy to pack and lug around India before arriving in the Maldives! The only downside was the immediate siting of a large number of cables in the sea next to our room (131) Of course I approve of using solar energy but they did seem obtrusive. A few more metres away would have helped. I had expected the water bungalow to be on a pier in the ocean, it actually backed onto the grounds but had a ladder from the deck to the water. It seemed it was not advised to swim there (red flag showing), I think this is due to currents flowing through the gaps in the reef to the solar panels. The walk to the pool/beach was quite a trot since our room was at the end of the run. The price is high although quite a bit of it is tax, not sure fully inclusive is worth it if you don't drink much."
