PB hotel design editorial

Circular geometry rarely governs an entire resort at this scale, yet at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, the disc becomes the defining formal idea — from the vast circular lagoon pool carved into the tip of the main island to the arc of the central pavilion's sweeping canopy, and most dramatically, in the aerial view of the overwater villa chain, where round pod-like structures string along timber boardwalks in a loose spiral above the turquoise shallows of North Malé Atoll. Opened in 2021 as part of the broader Fari Islands development master-planned by Shigeru Ban, the resort's architectural language sets itself apart from the thatched-roof traditionalism that has defined Maldivian luxury for decades, reaching instead toward something closer to contemporary resort modernism. The overwater villas, each topped with integrated solar panels and clad in vertical aluminium fins, open entirely to the lagoon through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls — teak deck, circular sun lounger, and an infinity edge all dissolving the boundary between room and reef. Inside, warm-toned timber panelling runs floor to ceiling, paired with honed stone floors, rattan accents, and pendant lighting in woven natural forms — a palette that grounds the otherwise futurist shell in something tactile and human. The curved restaurant terrace visible at dusk, with its backlit amber tile bar wall and rope-weave outdoor dining chairs, carries the same calibrated tension between geometric ambition and material warmth that distinguishes the property across every scale.

"Most magical hotel experience to date! (The price is also proportional to that). We had the pleasure of staying at the hotel for 5 nights in April 2026. The hotel is located near Male, only 45 mins speed boat away which made the connection from the airport easy. Once we arrived, the rooms were ready and we were taken from the speedboat pier to the sunset villa by Aslam, our butler. He had provided an amazingly attentive service throughout our stay! We also love the access to patina hotel which has more Asian food options as well! The room was overall the best design, in terms of flow, architectural aspects, and material used. Dive team were amazing as well. Highly recommend, they took care of us so well. Overall amazing stay!"

"My husband and I just finished a short stay at the resort earlier this week. To say it was spectacular would be an understatement. We've since transferred resorts, and would honestly have happily stayed at the Ritz for our full vacation. Hindsight is 20/20. I wanted to call out a few people and a few observations. Aslam was our day-to-day support, and he was incredible. I don't think we ever waited more than 2 minutes for a response. We often chose to walk or cycle places, but as we did I would often glance up and see Aslam there, in a buggy, ready just in case. The in Villa touches made our anniversary truly special. The food across the resort was magnificent. Ismail was a delight each morning at breakfast, and Tom (at Eau) and Zoo (at Summer Pavilion) had truly excellent recommendations and were so attentive. The sommelier (I apologize, I've forgotten his name) at Eau was a true pleasure. As someone who isn't a big "joiner", the cocktail hour was well designed and Marie was an amazing bridge for those of us who don't love socializing. We had a great time snorkeling, and my husband enjoyed diving. I've never left a vacation more at peace. I'm looking forward to an opportunity to return. Please pass along our thanks to the team. I think this is the only place we'd return to in the Maldives. That is in small part location and the design of the resort, and in very large part the excellent service and staff."

"Hello, it was a wonderful stay at Ritz Carlton. Amina was our tour guide. She was in contact every time we needed help, baggy or something else. I can’t imagine a better person to manage our holidays than she. We are missing her a lot. Speaking about the hotel. The territory is beautiful and has 3 islands. Two of them include villas and one are for the restaurants. Our favorite restaurant is La Laconda. They have Italian cuisine with delicious pasta, pizza and salad. Their chef Lorenzo can cook the most amazing meals… We will miss him a lot) Try there grilled octopus with asparagus it’s cooked in a very special way and I haven’t tried such a tender octopus before. We lived on a water villa and it was the best choice for us to make. I don’t recommend to go there with a little baby or children because it’s dangerous. But if you are a couple… live for at least 3 days and it will be your memorable experience forever ❤️🏝️😍 Thank you , all staff of Ritz Carlton, it was a pleasure to stay at your hotel and have you around."

"We travelled here to celebrate my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary and, as the first proper family holiday we’d all managed together in years, the trip already felt incredibly special before we’d even arrived. By the end of our stay, it had become one of those holidays we know we’ll talk about for years to come. The resort itself is stunning, peaceful, beautifully maintained, and effortlessly elegant without ever feeling overly formal. But what truly made this place unforgettable was the people. From day one, the beach and Beach Shack became our favourite place on the island. Cake and George were exceptional throughout our stay — warm, attentive, and somehow always one step ahead without anything ever feeling forced. Every afternoon at 4pm, Diet Cokes would appear without fail, which quickly became a running family joke. Cake also fully embraced my prawn obsession, keeping me supplied with everything from the famous gambas to Dad’s increasingly inventive “build your own” prawn salads. The whole beach team created such an easy, relaxed atmosphere that every day felt completely effortless. One of the standout moments of the trip was the sunset dolphin cruise, which was honestly magical. We were lucky enough to see countless dolphins throughout the journey, many of them swimming alongside the boat for long stretches, leaping through the water as though they were dancing beside us. Watching the sunset while surrounded by dolphins was one of those rare moments that felt almost surreal, and something none of us will ever forget. La Locanda was equally wonderful, both at breakfast and dinner. Adey, Tookai and Azu brought such warmth and energy every time we visited, and Isko was exceptional from start to finish — attentive, funny, thoughtful, and effortlessly brilliant at what he does. A genuine 10/10. He also very kindly entertained our insistence that lemon and sugar crêpes are elite and promised to try them himself, which we’re absolutely counting as a win. A huge part of what made this trip so memorable was Shuhu, our Aris Meeha. She had such a natural way of making everything feel personal and thoughtful without it ever seeming like effort. The little touches she arranged throughout our stay, especially around my parents’ anniversary, it genuinely meant so much to all of us. One of the funniest moments of the holiday was the very official “speeding ticket” she issued my dad after an overenthusiastic bike ride around the island, which had the entire family in tears laughing. We also have to mention Muneef and Arafath for enthusiastically joining in with our disposable camera photoshoots and for making every limo transfer smooth and stress-free. What impressed us most was that six people with completely different ideas of the perfect holiday all came away equally happy. We left feeling relaxed, very well looked after, and already talking about when we can return. There are many beautiful resorts in the Maldives, but this one felt genuinely special because of the warmth, kindness, and care shown by every single person we met."

"Our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives was nothing short of exceptional. We stayed in a stunning water villa, and waking up every morning to the most beautiful sunrise over the ocean was truly magical. The villa was spacious, elegant, and thoughtfully designed, with breathtaking views from every corner. What made this stay even more memorable was the outstanding service. A very special thank you to our butler, Anth, who made our experience seamless from arrival to departure. She was incredibly attentive, kind, and always one step ahead in making sure everything was perfect for us. Every team member we encountered was warm, professional, and genuinely welcoming, which made us feel at home while enjoying such a luxurious escape. From the dining experiences to the peaceful atmosphere of the island, every detail was curated to perfection. This was a truly unforgettable getaway, and we left with amazing memories. We will definitely be returning and cannot wait to experience this paradise again"
