PB hotel design editorial

From above, the arc of overwater villas curving around Vommuli Island's reef edge in Dhaalu Atoll carries the unmistakable geometry of a manta ray — a shape that is no accident. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, which opened in 2016, was designed by the New York-based firm WOW Architects with interiors by HBA Singapore, and the manta ray silhouette governs everything from the island's master plan to the dramatic overwater bar, where an organically sculpted ceiling canopy — painted with coral and sea-flora motifs in amber and terracotta — fans outward above a circular counter like gills filtering the Indian Ocean light. The 77 villas and suites divide between the island itself and the overwater chain, and the two room types carry distinct material registers. Overwater villas are lined in warm-toned timber veneer, the panels running wall to ceiling to create a continuous wood envelope that pulls focus toward the horizon through fully retractable glass walls and deep teak decks. Beach villas read lighter — blonde oak floors, woven jute rugs, blue-gradient bed runners that echo the lagoon just beyond the sliding doors. On the island, the main restaurant pavilion is framed in tall steel-and-glass bays that glow amber at dusk, the honeycomb pendant lanterns visible from the starlit pool terrace that reflects the structure back in the still water.

"There are luxury resorts, and then there is The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. After spending four unforgettable nights here celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, I can confidently say this was the finest resort experience my wife and I have ever had. From the breathtaking natural beauty of the Maldives to the genuine warmth of its people, every moment felt extraordinary. Our experience actually began before we even reached the resort. Upon arriving in Malé, Aminah greeted us, coordinated all of our luggage, chauffeured us to the seaplane terminal, and ensured everything was taken care of. It was the perfect introduction to Maldivian hospitality. After a spectacular 45-minute seaplane flight over countless shades of turquoise, we landed at what can only be described as paradise. We were welcomed with fresh coconuts before being whisked away by golf cart to our Overwater Sunset Villa, and what a villa it was. We have traveled extensively, but I have never experienced accommodations that were this luxurious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Waking up over crystal-clear water with uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean is something words simply cannot do justice. Since we were celebrating our 25th anniversary, the resort had prepared several thoughtful surprises. We had informed them beforehand that we observe a strict halal diet, and not only did they leave us a beautiful anniversary note, fresh fruit, chocolates, and non-alcoholic champagne, but they also thoughtfully removed all alcohol-related products from our villa. Every member of the staff was aware of our dietary requirements throughout our stay, making us feel genuinely cared for rather than simply accommodated. Our butler, Abanoub, deserves special recognition. He was the single biggest reason our stay went from exceptional to unforgettable. Always available on WhatsApp, incredibly responsive, proactive, and constantly anticipating our needs before we even asked, he made everything effortless. Whether it was arranging reservations, coordinating surprises, or simply checking in to ensure everything was perfect, his attention to detail was remarkable. Our culinary journey was equally impressive. Our first dinner at ALBA featured perfectly cooked steak and fresh fish that immediately set the tone for the rest of our stay. The following morning we enjoyed one of the best breakfast buffets we've ever experienced before heading out on a dolphin excursion. Captain Shamoon and First Mate Shaaz made the experience truly memorable. Thanks to Shaaz's sharp eye, we were able to witness dolphins in their natural habitat, making for an incredible 90-minute cruise through the beautiful waters surrounding the island. When we returned, another surprise awaited us. Abanoub had transformed our villa into a romantic retreat complete with a celebration cake, romantic music, and a beautifully prepared hot bath. It was one of those moments that reminds you why St. Regis is synonymous with luxury. Dinner that evening was at Orientale, where we enjoyed one of the best Pad Thai dishes we've ever had. We would return again before the end of our stay, where Yeni, our server on both visits, took wonderful care of us. The Mango Sticky Rice became one of our favorite desserts of the trip. We enjoyed it so much that Abanoub arranged for it to be specially served to us again later in our stay. One of the highlights of our anniversary was a private candlelit beach dinner that I had secretly arranged for my wife. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and just as the evening began, the rain arrived. Rather than allowing the experience to be ruined, the St. Regis team demonstrated exactly why they are world class. They opened T•Pan, which had been closed that evening, exclusively for us. Instead of losing our romantic dinner, we gained an even more intimate experience. Muslin, our host, and Chef Anis created an unforgettable four-course Surf & Turf dinner with exceptional food, creative non-alcoholic beverages, and impeccable service. What could have been a disappointment became one of our favorite memories from the entire trip. Our final full day included one of the finest spa experiences we've ever enjoyed. My wife's therapist, Nancy, not only provided an exceptional massage but also surprised her with a beautiful "Happy Anniversary" message crafted from seashells. It was another thoughtful touch that perfectly reflected the resort's incredible attention to detail. That evening, we watched one final magical sunset from the iconic Whale Bar. With the sky painted in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold, it was impossible not to simply sit back and appreciate where we were. Dinner at Cargo, the resort's Indian restaurant, was another culinary highlight and the perfect ending to our stay. When we returned to our villa that evening, we found yet another surprise waiting for us. Our room had once again been transformed with special anniversary decorations, gifts from the resort, and a beautifully prepared bed. It was the perfect conclusion to an unforgettable celebration. Even our departure reflected the same level of care we experienced throughout our stay. Although our international flight from Malé wasn't until 10:00 PM, the resort graciously allowed us to remain in our villa until 4:00 PM before taking the final seaplane back to Malé. We then relaxed in the St. Regis lounge at the seaplane terminal until it was time to head to the airport, where Aminah once again took care of everything and ensured we were comfortably escorted to our departure. Luxury can certainly be measured by beautiful villas, stunning beaches, and incredible food—but true luxury is measured by people. Every single member of the St. Regis team made us feel like we were the only guests on the island. Their warmth, attentiveness, professionalism, and genuine kindness transformed what would have been a wonderful vacation into one of the most meaningful experiences of our lives. Yes, staying at the St. Regis Maldives is expensive. But after experiencing it firsthand, I can honestly say it is worth every single penny. The Maldives is one of the most beautiful places on Earth—but The St. Regis Vommuli is what makes it unforgettable. It truly is the finest address in the beautiful Maldives, and we cannot wait to return."

"We visited this resort as a couple in July 2026 and absolutely fell in love with everything here. The ocean view from our room was breathtaking—crystal clear turquoise sea right outside, the scenery is absolutely stunning. The whole island is fully equipped with complete facilities, including lovely beach restaurants, snorkeling tours and relaxing lounge areas, covering all our vacation needs perfectly."

"Firstly, is this hotel a 2 star hotel, no its not, but is it worth $2,500+ a night, in my opinion definitely not, hence me marking it 2 out of 5! I am a huge Marriott supporter holding the top tier membership & have spent over 3 years of my life in Marriott hotels but the St Regis did just not WOW me at all. Is it bad, certainly not, but as above, is it worth $2,500+ a night, definitely not! We have stayed in both of the other two 'premium' Maldive Marriott properties in The Ritz Carlton & The W and both of these properties felt premium, The St Regis didn't! The island design is not great at all, there doesn't seem to be a single point on the whole island with an uninterrupted view out to sea, the whole island is surrounded by lines of rock breaks as per the attached pic. For some really strange reason none of the main restaurants are on, or adjacent to the water? There is the Whale Bar that is on the water which is nice but why none of the main restaurants? The top restaurant (T-Pan Japanese) really is a terrible design, it is basically a square black box but square boxes do seem popular with the designer, just take a look at the over water villa's which are the least attractive villas I've ever seen. Out of the restaurants the Orientale is probably the best, we ate there twice, but again nothing seemed premium, it was good, but only just. All the other restaurants I'd class as just above average. The WIFI speed is terrible, see attached a screen grab I took one day of the speed at less than 1 Mbps. OK, 5 years ago I imagine getting a decent WIFI speed would be very difficult on a remote island, but not nowadays. The highlight of our stay however was the staff, who really were great! If we had this experience at The Sheraton or The Meridien & paid $500 per night, I'd have probably given 5 stars but if you want a 5 star experience & are prepared to pay $2,500+ then my advice is definitely to go to one of the other two premium Marriott properties in the Maldives"

"Our five-night, six-day stay at The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort was absolutely unforgettable. It was truly “varah baaru”, amazing, exceptional, and simply the best. To Falah, Absal, Iku, Sebastian, Shiunaz, Karen, Amber, Nancy, Azhaan, Ulaas, Su, Alex, Bayu, Kauser, Jobin, Anoos, Akma, and everyone else who cared for us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Each of them made our stay special through thoughtful service, warm conversations, and genuine smiles. The service always felt sincere, personal, and heartfelt. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort gave us much more than a luxurious vacation. It gave us memories we will always cherish and friendships we sincerely hope will last. Before anything else, we must begin with Falah, our wonderful butler, who was the greatest highlight of our entire stay. Falah was always available, attentive, patient, and genuinely kind. We had many questions throughout our stay, ranging from dining and activities to transportation, Maldivian culture, and small practical details. He answered every single question thoughtfully and carefully, never making us feel rushed or as though any question was unimportant. Most of all, we will never forget his bright and radiant smile. It made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and reassured us throughout our stay. His kindness never felt formal or scripted. It felt completely genuine. He was the best, and he is one of the main reasons we already want to return. We were also very grateful to Absal, who shared fascinating stories about The St. Regis, the resort, the Maldives, and the history of Malé. His explanations were informative, engaging, and full of personality. Thanks to him, our stay became more than a beautiful vacation. It also became an opportunity to better understand the country and its history. Another person who deeply touched our hearts was Kauser, our villa attendant. Every day, we discovered handwritten messages in unexpected places around the villa, including the windows and shower booth. These small surprises were incredibly thoughtful and became something we looked forward to each day. The notes made the villa feel personal, warm, and welcoming. They were simple gestures, but they reflected the care and attention that defined our entire stay. What impressed us most during our time at Vommuli was the attention to detail. The resort is naturally breathtaking, with crystal-clear water, white sand, lush greenery, elegant villas, and beautiful sunsets. Yet what made the experience truly memorable was the human warmth behind it all. A staff member remembered something we had casually mentioned. A question was answered with patience. A handwritten note appeared in the villa. Someone greeted us by name with a sincere smile. These moments were small individually, but together they created a deeply personal experience. We must also mention Crust & Craft, which quickly became one of our favorite places at the resort. The pizza was absolutely unforgettable. The crust, texture, flavor, and freshness were all exceptional. Even after returning home, we continued talking about it. Among the many wonderful dining experiences at the resort, the pizza at Crust & Craft remains one of our strongest and happiest memories. Another lovely discovery was the Blue Ocean Boutique. We found beautiful magnets and handmade pouches that were far more unique and higher in quality than the typical souvenirs available at the airport. The items felt carefully selected and meaningfully connected to the Maldives. Our visits to the boutique became even more enjoyable because of Akma. Her cheerful and kind smile made me so happy that I found myself returning almost every day. Her warmth made every visit feel bright and welcoming. What makes The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort truly special is that luxury here is not defined only by beautiful villas, private pools, fine dining, or flawless facilities. The true luxury is the feeling of being genuinely cared for and the personal connection created throughout the experience. We cannot wait to return next year. Robin & JJ"
