PB hotel design editorial

From above, the arc of overwater villas curving around Vommuli Island's reef edge in Dhaalu Atoll carries the unmistakable geometry of a manta ray — a shape that is no accident. The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, which opened in 2016, was designed by the New York-based firm WOW Architects with interiors by HBA Singapore, and the manta ray silhouette governs everything from the island's master plan to the dramatic overwater bar, where an organically sculpted ceiling canopy — painted with coral and sea-flora motifs in amber and terracotta — fans outward above a circular counter like gills filtering the Indian Ocean light. The 77 villas and suites divide between the island itself and the overwater chain, and the two room types carry distinct material registers. Overwater villas are lined in warm-toned timber veneer, the panels running wall to ceiling to create a continuous wood envelope that pulls focus toward the horizon through fully retractable glass walls and deep teak decks. Beach villas read lighter — blonde oak floors, woven jute rugs, blue-gradient bed runners that echo the lagoon just beyond the sliding doors. On the island, the main restaurant pavilion is framed in tall steel-and-glass bays that glow amber at dusk, the honeycomb pendant lanterns visible from the starlit pool terrace that reflects the structure back in the still water.

"Great stay in a sunset overwater villa. The resort has one of the best house reefs and you swim with sharks, stingrays, octopus, parrot fish and so much more on a daily basis. A beautiful naturally pristine place, only made better by impeccable service... a special shoutout goes to Haseeb who went above and beyond to make sure our room was spotless, welcoming and tidy and Sareer our butler who made every request a reality no questions asked, as well as Nixion at the gym and Ismael and Jas at the dive centre. Will be returning"

"Our trip to the Maldives with our 10-month-old was truly unforgettable. Traveling with a baby can be challenging, but everything about this experience made it incredibly easy and enjoyable for our family. The weather was perfect, the accommodations were top-notch, and waking up to the beach right outside our villa felt like a dream every day. A special thank you to our hostess, Kiki, who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Her attention to detail and genuine care made a huge difference in our experience. The resort was also very family-friendly. We loved the kids’ play area, took advantage of the convenient room service available anytime, and spent plenty of time enjoying the beautiful beach just steps from our villa. It was an amazing trip for both parents and baby, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience."

"We had the most amazing honeymoon here thanks to our butler, Mina! He thought of everything, had such thoughtful details set up for us, and upgraded us to a suite with easy access to the reef once he saw how much we loved the snorkeling. We can’t wait to return."

"Our stay at The St. Regis Maldives was nothing short of exceptional. The resort is immaculate, beautifully maintained, and perfectly positioned over the water with some of the most breathtaking views we have ever experienced. From our bedroom, we looked out onto a spectacular ocean canvas—layers of deep and light blues with crystal-clear water revealing coral reefs and colorful fish swimming below. It truly felt like paradise. Our villa was stunning. It featured a private pool overlooking the ocean, a spacious outdoor porch perfect for relaxing, and an incredibly well-designed interior. The bedroom was large and comfortable, complemented by a generous walk-in closet. The bathroom and bathtub were absolutely spectacular—luxurious and beautifully designed—and the living room offered another incredible panoramic view of the sea. What truly made our stay unforgettable, however, was the incredible service from the staff. First, we would like to recognize Amy, our butler. She clearly put a great deal of thought into making our anniversary trip special. She welcomed us with a bottle of champagne upon arrival, surprised us the next evening with a beautiful anniversary cake, and the following day prepared a lovely fruit plate along with a beautifully decorated bathtub. She consistently checked in with us to see if we needed anything and was always responsive and thoughtful. Her attention to detail and genuine care made our stay truly memorable. We would also like to recognize Mina. Although he was not directly assigned to our stay, he kindly gave us a golf cart ride and took the time to share a wealth of information about the resort. He recommended activities, foods to try, and even pointed out some of the best photo spots on the island. His warm personality and willingness to help went above and beyond. He even offered to assist us if we needed anything during our stay, which we greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Chef Mustafa at the Mediterranean restaurant. He noticed that we were vegetarian and personally suggested several dishes for us. He prepared special items for us, including a falafel that was absolutely delicious. His friendliness, knowledge, and passion for food made our dining experience truly wonderful. In addition, we would like to recognize Chef Ahmad, who prepared a special dish for us—Moussaka. He was incredibly pleasant and professional, and he surprised us with a beautifully balanced and delicious dish accompanied by thoughtfully selected condiments. His attentiveness and culinary skill made the experience even more memorable. Overall, our stay was peaceful, relaxing, and rejuvenating. The island atmosphere allowed us to completely disconnect from our digital devices and truly unwind. It was the perfect detox from the outside world. Yes, the resort is expensive—but the level of luxury, service, and beauty fully justifies the price. For anyone looking for an extraordinary experience in the Maldives, we would absolutely recommend The St. Regis Maldives without hesitation."
