PB hotel design editorial

Barely twenty minutes by speedboat from Malé's ferry terminal, a private island in South Malé Atoll has been shaped over decades into one of the atoll's most resolved resort environments. Velassaru Maldives — formerly known as Laguna Beach Resort before a comprehensive repositioning and renovation under Universal Resorts — distributes its 129 villas across both the island's palm-dense interior and a long jetty of overwater structures that extends into the lagoon's shallower reaches, their thatched rooflines visible in the aerial image as a broken necklace against turquoise water. Inside, the villas work through a familiar but well-executed Maldivian vocabulary: steeply pitched timber ceilings with exposed rafter structure, wide-plank hardwood floors in a warm teak register, and low-slung platform beds dressed in neutral linens with teal accent runners that quietly echo the lagoon colour outside. The sitting areas mix rattan bucket chairs with dark-framed occasional furniture and circular sisal rugs — a contemporary tropical register that avoids the heavier ethnic detailing that dates comparable properties. The headboard wall in several villa categories carries a backlit chevron panel in pale timber, giving the rooms a considered focal point that reads more like boutique hotel design than resort vernacular. Dining happens at an open timber deck shaded by tensile sail canopies, and the infinity pool — photographed here at dusk, its surface mirroring a violet sky — dissolves cleanly into the horizon with thatch-roofed water pavilions marking the edge.

"We spent 2 nights at Niva Velassaru and honestly enjoyed it so much. It’s the kind of place where you can just switch off for a couple of days and not feel like you have to do anything. The food was probably our favourite part of the stay. Everything we had was genuinely really good, and we were actually surprised by how much we enjoyed the meals. There was a nice variety and the food was fresh and flavourful, so we definitely didn’t get bored of eating there. The staff were also really lovely and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Our room was comfortable and clean, and the whole resort was peaceful and well kept. It was only 2 nights, but we really enjoyed our time there. We left wishing we had booked a few more nights, which is probably the best way to describe the stay. Definitely somewhere we’d be happy to visit again."

"An absolute slice of paradise! Velassaru is breathtakingly beautiful from the crystal clear turquoise waters and pristine beaches to the stunning overwater villas. But what truly makes this resort unforgettable is the incredible team. Everyone goes above and beyond, but a special thank you to Ann and Shaufa for providing such warm, attentive, and excellent service throughout our stay. You made us feel so welcome and truly cared for."

"Repeat visit! and honestly it was just as good as the first time. It's rainy season there, so we kind of mentally prepared ourselves for grey skies. And sure enough, one afternoon the rain came down properly. By the next morning it had cleared completely, and we spent the rest of the trip under blue skies like the rain never happened. If I'm being honest, the food is the thing I keep thinking back to. Every evening felt like they'd planned something new for us, a different cuisine each night, and always so much to choose from that we never ran out of things to try. Japanese restaurant was a highlight for us!1 The seafood in particular was so fresh it barely needed seasoning. And even something small like ordering room service late at night, it always came quickly and exactly right, which says a lot about how well the place runs behind the scenes. The staff made the whole trip feel effortless. Nothing went wrong, not once, and they were warm in a way that felt genuine rather than performative, like they actually wanted us to enjoy ourselves. Our pool was spotless the entire stay, and the island itself still has this quiet, untouched feeling, more like wandering through nature than staying at a resort. It's the kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying. We're already talking about when we'll go back. If you want somewhere that feels this peaceful and this well looked after, I can't recommend it enough. FYI - we stayed in room 217 with the pool"

"We stayed at Niva Velassaru in August on a family trip, and as frequent visitors to the Maldives who intentionally enjoy discovering different resorts, I can confidently say that this was one of our best experiences so far. The food was one of the highlights of our stay.** In addition to the main buffet restaurant, there are four excellent à-la-carte restaurants, all requiring advance reservations. I highly recommend trying all of them, as each one offers something different and the quality is consistently impressive. There are also two bars serving snacks, so you certainly won’t have to worry about food options or variety during your stay. In fact, each restaurant seems to be competing with the others for the title of best dining experience! The rooms were spacious and comfortable, although the private pool was smaller than we expected. The beach, however, was absolutely stunning. Having visited many resorts across the Maldives, I would confidently rank it among the top three beaches we have experienced in the Maldives. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming throughout our stay. A special mention goes to Mr. Salam, who is in charge of the restaurants. He was always helpful and genuinely passionate about the food. If you visit, definitely ask him for his recommendations on what dishes to try. The main infinity pool was another highlight, with a depth of around 1.5 metres and a perfect water temperature. The island itself is not very large, which we actually enjoyed—you can comfortably walk around the entire island in about 15 minutes. Another major advantage is the resort’s proximity to Malé Airport. The boat transfer took us less than 20 minutes, which makes the resort particularly convenient, especially for families and travellers who prefer to avoid a long seaplane transfer. Overall, Niva Velassaru is highly recommended, particularly for couples and families who value privacy, beautiful beaches, excellent food, friendly service, and a convenient location close to the airport. We truly enjoyed our stay and would happily return."

"We found Niva Velassaru completely by accident after a very long and stressful day of switching resorts and what an amazing surprise it turned out to be! We arrived back in Malé at around 16:30 with no accommodation booked and were stressed about finding a resort that could still arrange a transfer that afternoon/evening. By pure chance, we met a tour guide who pointed us towards the Niva Velassaru airport desk. There we met Adam, who was absolutely wonderful. He quickly put us in touch with reservations, a rate was arranged, and before we knew it we were being escorted to their airport lounge. After some complimentary refreshments, we were on our way to the resort in a lovely, comfortable speedboat. Considering how stressful our day had been up until that point, the whole experience was such a relief. And then we arrived… Niva Velassaru is STUNNING! The food deserves its own five-star review. Everything we had was delicious and there was a fantastic variety. You definitely won't go hungry here! The one area I think could be improved is the clarity around rates, inclusions and exclusions. It seems unnecessarily complicated, especially with the all-inclusive package not necessarily meaning everything is included. For example, soft drinks could be included at breakfast but not at dinner, which we found quite bizarre. It would be much better if the packages and inclusions were simplified and made clearer. There's also a really lovely gift shop on the property, which is definitely worth visiting. After staying here, I completely understand why so many reviewers say they keep returning. You really do get what you pay for. Niva Velassaru was completely unplanned, but ended up being one of the best surprises of our trip to the Maldives. Sometimes the places you find by accident turn out to be the ones you're happiest you found! ❤️ Special shout out for Afa! Incredible receptionist."
