PB hotel design editorial

Barely twenty minutes by speedboat from Malé's ferry terminal, a private island in South Malé Atoll has been shaped over decades into one of the atoll's most resolved resort environments. Velassaru Maldives — formerly known as Laguna Beach Resort before a comprehensive repositioning and renovation under Universal Resorts — distributes its 129 villas across both the island's palm-dense interior and a long jetty of overwater structures that extends into the lagoon's shallower reaches, their thatched rooflines visible in the aerial image as a broken necklace against turquoise water. Inside, the villas work through a familiar but well-executed Maldivian vocabulary: steeply pitched timber ceilings with exposed rafter structure, wide-plank hardwood floors in a warm teak register, and low-slung platform beds dressed in neutral linens with teal accent runners that quietly echo the lagoon colour outside. The sitting areas mix rattan bucket chairs with dark-framed occasional furniture and circular sisal rugs — a contemporary tropical register that avoids the heavier ethnic detailing that dates comparable properties. The headboard wall in several villa categories carries a backlit chevron panel in pale timber, giving the rooms a considered focal point that reads more like boutique hotel design than resort vernacular. Dining happens at an open timber deck shaded by tensile sail canopies, and the infinity pool — photographed here at dusk, its surface mirroring a violet sky — dissolves cleanly into the horizon with thatch-roofed water pavilions marking the edge.

"We have just returned from a very lovely stay at Velassaru. We had two side by side beach villas with pools, one for us and one for our daughter, husband and eight-year-old grandson. Both were large, well equipped and comfortable. Grandson loved the outdoor bath and shower. The island is lovely. The lagoon pool has plenty of shady recliners, the beaches are of fine sand, and there is plenty of choice for dining. But over and above the sheer beauty of the place is the wonderful, impeccable service from the staff. Everyone was helpful, polite and keen to make sure we had whatever we needed. Cold drinks were served at the poolside and fruit skewers appeared each afternoon. The food was excellent. Our favourite was Sand Grill, and we had great fun in Sora, the over-water Japanese restaurant at the teriyaki bar. Breakfast and buffet evening meals had a wide range of excellent dishes. When my husband hurt his foot, the charming doctor sorted the problem out and changed the dressing every other day. We had a couple of exceptional spa treatments in the spa over the water. Our grandson learned to scuba dive on the Bubble Maker session. Tisha, his lovely instructor was calm, patient and fun. She made sure he felt safe and learned quickly. He enjoyed it so much that his parents did a course and they all went out diving together. Tisha and grandson made a coral dome together as part of a project to sponsor new coral reefs, which they placed in the water. We are promised pictures of our coral as it grows. We all went out on the Dolphin spotting cruise and were entranced when we found ourselves in the middle of a pod of about 50 spinner dolphins. We watched them play around the boat, diving and spinning for many minutes. Later, while snorkelling, a turtle popped up less than a metre from us. A truly magical day. None of us wanted to leave. Our grandson insisted that we must come back…next week please. It will have to be next holiday, but we all look forward to returning."

"We had an excellent corporate trip to NIVA Velassaru Maldives with a team of 25 people. It was a short 4-day break for the team, and everyone was very pleased with the experience. The resort was a perfect fit for a group trip: all team members were comfortably accommodated in beach villas. The territory is compact yet spacious enough so that no one felt crowded. The logistics were very convenient — a quick speedboat transfer from the airport, everything well-organized from airport meet-and-greet to fast check-in at the villas. There were plenty of opportunities for team building. We organized a beach volleyball tournament, went snorkeling and diving. Everyone played with great enthusiasm, laughter, and real team spirit — exactly what is needed to strengthen the team. The sunset fishing trip was a special highlight that left no one indifferent! We had a pretty good catch! In the evening, we enjoyed a nice gala dinner featuring a great variety of the fish we had caught ourselves. For corporate trips and team-building in the “relaxation + activity” format, this is a very worthy option. We highly recommend NIVA Velassaru Maldives if you want to combine beautiful Maldivian scenery with lively team interaction."
