PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the limestone ridge above Rabat, where the Maltese plateau drops away toward the illuminated sprawl of the island below, the Verdala Wellness Hotel AX Privilege sits within a building whose geometry is inseparable from its site. The architecture — stacked horizontal planes of honey-coloured limestone cladding cantilevered over raw outcrops of the island's native globigerina — makes the geological argument that the building grew from the rock rather than being placed upon it. Ancient dry-stone rubble walls at the base survive intact, bridging vernacular Malta and the hotel's contemporary language of projecting terraces and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Inside, the interiors pursue a warm minimalism that flatters the landscape views they frame. Guest rooms are finished in tadelakt-textured plaster headwalls flanked by live-edge timber panels, with woven pendant lights in carbonised cane hanging low over linen-upholstered beds — a palette of raw umber, ecru, and dark walnut that keeps the eye moving toward the terrace rather than competing with it. The restaurant deploys oak-effect flooring, textured concrete wall panels, and a mix of bouclé barrel chairs and slim black-framed dining tables beneath sheer curtain screens that diffuse the afternoon light. At night, the rooftop infinity pool terrace — furnished with rattan lounge pods and low-slung sun beds in sand-coloured fabric — commands an uninterrupted panorama from Mdina's illuminated bastions to the harbour lights of Valletta on the eastern horizon.

Verdala Wellness Hotel AX Privilege - Adults Only Reviews

"An enjoyable 10 day stay here, the gym and spa facilities are exceptional and the highlight of our visit. We ate each evening in The Griffin where we were given superb attention as we appreciated delicious meals, local fish, all beautifully presented. Breakfasts were the same high standard. The whole hotel is very designer styled, muted, subtle, no colour which is perhaps not to everyone's taste. Unfortunately, the weather was very poor throughout our stay, and even though our room was comfortable, we did find the hotel quite cold. Without exception, the staff throughout are very well trained, professional and attentive. A special mention for charismatic Sam who entertained us producing a special cocktail which we named 'Smokey Sam', a real favourite. Also Ripon, who took exceptional care of our room. As we tried to understand our bill for extras, which even the staff found difficult to explain ie, 2 diners, one evening, 7 cauliflower soup - for us an all inclusive rate would have been far preferable."

"The hotel is built around the wellness concept of body and mind… this is reflected in every single detail, within the room, we had the junior suite and throughout the hotel and spa staff ! The room is spacious, extremely well finished and designed. Huge terrace overlooking a breath taking view, with heated jacuzzi, loungers and rocking chairs !!! My wife and I experienced a second honeymoon ! Never felt so relaxed and refreshed after a hotel stay !"

"I had requested a quiet deluxe room on a high floor but was upgraded to Junior Suite on a high floor on arrival - lovely surprise! Gorgeous modern and calming hotel decor, huge bed and bath and terrace with sun loungers, hammock and hot tub. It was a super quiet room overlooking the vast countryside below. Breakfast and coffee menu was excellent. Dinner superb. Great spa treatment. Spa facilities themselves were a little disappointing and overcrowded, especially with the Hammam steam room out of action for our stay. The outdoor pool was also unexpectedly closed. Would have been more disappointed had we not got the upgraded room."

"Great facilities, wonderful rooms, good food - and a reasonable price, would recommend to anyone coming to Malta. The staff, especially the spa reception desk, were really helpful too."
