PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the limestone ridge above Rabat, where the Maltese plateau drops away toward the illuminated sprawl of the island below, the Verdala Wellness Hotel AX Privilege sits within a building whose geometry is inseparable from its site. The architecture — stacked horizontal planes of honey-coloured limestone cladding cantilevered over raw outcrops of the island's native globigerina — makes the geological argument that the building grew from the rock rather than being placed upon it. Ancient dry-stone rubble walls at the base survive intact, bridging vernacular Malta and the hotel's contemporary language of projecting terraces and floor-to-ceiling glazing. Inside, the interiors pursue a warm minimalism that flatters the landscape views they frame. Guest rooms are finished in tadelakt-textured plaster headwalls flanked by live-edge timber panels, with woven pendant lights in carbonised cane hanging low over linen-upholstered beds — a palette of raw umber, ecru, and dark walnut that keeps the eye moving toward the terrace rather than competing with it. The restaurant deploys oak-effect flooring, textured concrete wall panels, and a mix of bouclé barrel chairs and slim black-framed dining tables beneath sheer curtain screens that diffuse the afternoon light. At night, the rooftop infinity pool terrace — furnished with rattan lounge pods and low-slung sun beds in sand-coloured fabric — commands an uninterrupted panorama from Mdina's illuminated bastions to the harbour lights of Valletta on the eastern horizon.

"Absolutely wonderful hotel. Perfect for unwinding away from crowds. Everything about the hotel and the staff is exceptional. It’s just a short walk into Rabat and Mdina both being beautiful old towns. We had a junior suite which was huge with own jacuzzi and loungers. All the staff were so helpful and friendly and the hotels and rooms are kept really clean. We used Bolt taxi’s to get in to Valletta which were about €15 each way. They are abundant so literally 5 minute wait to pick up. Obviously if it’s party life you’re after this isn’t the hotel for you but for couples seeking a relaxing break this hotel is perfect. There isn’t too much around the hotel so you do need to walk 10 mins to bars and restaurants but then there’s plenty of choice. Rabat and Mdina are beautiful and well worth several visits."

"From the moment we arrived until the day we left, our five-night stay at Verdala Hotel was exceptional. The hotel itself is beautiful, peaceful and immaculately maintained, but what really sets it apart is the people. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, welcoming and highly professional. The service struck the perfect balance between genuine friendliness and discreet efficiency, making us feel valued throughout our stay. We stayed in a Junior Suite which was spacious, beautifully appointed and incredibly comfortable. It was a wonderful place to relax after exploring Malta. We also dined at The Griffin on a few occasions. Each meal was excellent. The menu is thoughtfully curated, the food was consistently delicious and the service was outstanding every time. It became one of the highlights of our stay. Verdala Hotel has created something quite special. The atmosphere throughout the property is calm, luxurious and effortlessly welcoming. It is clear that there is a strong culture of hospitality, and every member of the team deserves recognition. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a luxury stay in Malta, and we are already looking forward to returning."

"Verdala Wellness Hotel has all the potential to become one of the best luxury wellness hotels in Malta. At the moment, however, it falls just short of a true five-star experience because of inconsistent service. The hotel itself is beautiful. Everything feels new, modern and tastefully designed. Our Junior Suite was spacious, with a huge comfortable bed, a lovely bathroom with both a bath and shower, and a practical terrace. The wellness facilities, gym and spa are outstanding, and the massages were excellent. The infinity pool overlooking the valley is stunning and creates a very relaxing atmosphere. The food also deserves special praise. Breakfast, lunch by the pool and dinner at Griffin were all of excellent quality. There are a few practical improvements that would make a big difference. There are simply not enough sunbeds around the pool, especially during weekends. Staff even advised guests to reserve beds early in the morning with towels and personal belongings, which unfortunately creates the atmosphere of a crowded all-inclusive resort rather than a luxury wellness hotel. The biggest opportunity for improvement is service consistency. Some staff members, especially Jade, Samuel and Sri, delivered exceptional service, as did the reception and housekeeping teams. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case throughout the hotel. Food service was often very slow, breakfast orders were not always prepared correctly, the wellness call buttons frequently went unanswered, and we even requested cutlery for our room several times without it ever arriving. During half of our stay there was also no Coca-Cola Zero available anywhere in the resort, something you would not expect from a five-star hotel. These are all relatively small issues on their own, but together they prevent Verdala from fully delivering the luxury experience its beautiful facilities deserve. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend the hotel. With a few improvements in operational consistency and service, Verdala could easily become a true five-star destination."
