PB hotel design editorial

Glassoni — the traditional Maltese enclosed timber balconies projecting from the facade in a deep steel-blue — are among the most distinctive architectural elements in Valletta, and the townhouse that became AX The Saint John wears several of the finest examples on the street. The honey-coloured limestone facade, typical of the Baroque urban grain that UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 1980, gives way inside to a ground-floor corridor that moves between two registers: white-painted plasterwork with heavy cornicing and a Murano-style chandelier overhead, then a glass-panel floor section lit from below, framing the passage between the historic shell and its contemporary fit-out. The interiors carry a consistent language of dark steel frames against warm walnut joinery — open shelving units, bedheads with inset leather panels, industrial pendant lights in polished aluminium — set on warm Maltese stone-tile floors with sisal-bordered rugs anchoring each bed. Chairs drawn from mid-century references, including what appears to be a butterfly chair in black leather, sit alongside Tolix-style industrial pieces, giving the rooms the atmosphere of a carefully edited collector's apartment rather than a standard hotel category. Framed black-and-white photography of Valletta street scenes lines the walls, keeping the property visually grounded in its city. The building's arched internal courtyard, visible through the corridor's terminal arch with its blue-painted louvred shutters intact, carries the spatial generosity of the original palazzo plan into the heart of the boutique hotel.

AX The Saint John Reviews

"We stayed at The Saint John for a week on our first visit to Malta. The location is ideal for exploring the city. The reception and breakfast are at the sister hotel the Rosselli a couple of doors down and the service was exemplary throughout, from the way we were greeted on arrival quite late on the Sunday night with a drink and guide to what was on offer at the hotel and in Valletta (sorry we didn't get his name), to departure when we were able to come back to the hotel and relax before our late flight home. Our room at the back of the hotel (504) was really good with a lovely little balcony overlooking the city and across to the Marsamxett harbour in one direction and the Med in the other. It was at the back so we didn't get any noise from Merchants' Street at the front, although in the centre of the city complete quiet cannot be expected. It wasn't intrusive. The breakfast (in Grain St, the hotel's restaurant) was first class with Katho and the team looking after us superbly and we had a really good dinner there one night too. We also enjoyed the rooftop bar Over Grain. As and when we return to Valletta (which we're sure we will) we will definitely stay here again."

"We cannot recommend The Saint John enough for a stay in Valetta. We arrived much later than scheduled due to flight delays, however we were checked in, offered a glass of water and a much needed glass of prosecco by the kind reception staff member, who also provided some honey for my sore throat! The hotel and our room were spotlessly clean and beautifully appointed. All of the staff were amazing, professional, helpful, friendly and kind. The breakfast served in the sister hotel Rosselli a few doors down was exceptional. Katho and Marisol looked after everyone - but again, all the staff were brilliant! The lovely roof top bar was another asset for evening drinks. Other reviews have mentioned the noise from local bars, but you are in the centre of the old city, so that is part of the atmosphere. Being so central is an asset to see all of the local sights with proximity to ferries and buses for trips to visit the other delights of Malta. We cannot fault our stay. We appreciate everyone from the staff team for making our time in Malta so memorable. Best from Anne and Ed"

"We had a truly wonderful stay at this hotel in the heart of Valletta. The location is perfect for exploring the city, and the hotel itself is spotless, with beautifully maintained rooms that are both stylish and extremely comfortable. The service was exceptional throughout our stay — the reception team were warm, welcoming, and always happy to help, while the restaurant staff of Grain Street provided outstanding service and made the meal a pleasure. The food was absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations. Overall, this was an outstanding experience from start to finish, and we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Valletta. Well done to the entire team, and please keep up the fantastic service! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"A lovely location in Valletta to explore the city. Straight forward to travel further afield to Gozo, the Three Cities and Mdina. The hotel staff were welcoming, our room comfortable and well equipped. A highlight was our breakfast with plenty of choices, the lovely and efficient staff team led by Katho ."

"We had a week in the Ax St John which is in a great central location. It is spotlessly clean and the rooms are lovely, but if you want a quiet stay ask for a room at the back of the hotel. Breakfast is served at the adjoining AX Rosselli and it was fabulous. A three tier stand with pastries, cold cuts and cheese, then fruit at the top, plus your choice of eggs and omelettes, yoghurt and cereals. The breakfast staff, under team leader Katho, were absolutely fantastic. The service was totally faultless. Thank you for a wonder ful stay."
