PB hotel design editorial

Among the oldest surviving maritime infrastructure in the central Mediterranean, the 16th-century galley repair yard on Senglea's waterfront spent centuries keeping the Knights of St John's fleet seaworthy before falling into long disuse. Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour, which opened in 2017, was carved from this Hospitaller stonework — the globigerina limestone walls, barrel vaults, and sweeping arched ceilings left entirely intact and made the governing logic of every interior decision. The lobby sits beneath a sequence of ribbed stone vaults that the conversion wisely refused to plaster over, their warm honey-coloured mass set against dark velvet sectional sofas, swivel egg chairs in taupe, and polished concrete floors — a composition that lets the masonry do its own arguing. The 14 rooms divide between those fitted inside the original vaulted chambers, where freestanding soaking tubs are positioned beneath arched apertures in bare stone walls, and newer upper-floor additions whose black-framed windows frame the Grand Harbour with a crispness the historic fabric never could. Rooftop timber decking surrounds a lap pool set directly against the medieval bastion of Fort St Michael — one of the more dramatically sited swimming pools anywhere in southern Europe. The palette throughout holds to grey linen headboards, geometric wool rugs, and brushed brass bedside lamps, keeping the contemporary elements quiet enough that the building's own six centuries of history remain the loudest thing in the room.

About

The Cugó Gran Macina is truly a hotel with a difference. Historical fortress walls contrast with modern interior design and bespoke luxury fittings. The 21 suites range from 40 square metres to an impressive 130 square metres. Most have unobstructed views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding marina, high vaulted ceilings and ample natural light. The hotel offers a swimming pool, tucked discreetly on the rooftop of the annex building with a terrace looking out across the water to Vittoriosa and Cospicua. Other features include airy communal spaces, a fully-fledged bar, a fine dining modern Mediterranean restaurant, an events rooftop with panoramic harbour views and a boardroom for small conferences.

"The hotel was gorgeous, but the service was deplorable. The front desk staff were inconsistent at best and rude at worst. The rooms were never fully cleaned or stocked. As we attempted to arrange travel plans to the airport for an early morning departure, the staff suggested we figure it out ourselves as there was nothing the hotel could offer. I recommend you find a 5-star hotel with exceptional service. This is not worth the money."

"Whenever we think Malta - we know our home in the Grand Harbour in Senglea. A historic place used as one of the most comfortable, strategically placed homes you can dream of, including its restaurant. The team offers best service and its friendlyness is legendary."

"Beautiful historic property with impressive architecture and a very special setting. The building itself is certainly memorable, and some elements of the stay were enjoyable. However, the hotel sometimes feels as if design is placed above practical comfort. In our room, the bathroom had a persistent damp, musty smell, which affected the comfort of the stay, especially at night. We had to sleep with the window open, otherwise the smell was too unpleasant. What made this more disappointing was that scent diffusers had already been placed in the room, which suggested that the issue was known rather than unexpected. The hotel offered a €50 adjustment at check-out, which we appreciated. Still, at a room rate of around €300 per night, a room with this kind of damp smell should not really be sold in that condition, especially in a hotel of this category. Overall, a beautiful property with real potential, but our specific room experience did not meet the standard one would reasonably expect at this level. For us, this was a 3-star experience."
