PB hotel design editorial

Globigerina limestone is Malta's building material of record, quarried from the island's own geology and used by the Knights of St John to raise the fortified city of Valletta in the sixteenth century — and it is this same honey-coloured stone, carved into baroque corbels and scrolled console brackets, that defines the street facade of Iniala Harbour House on St Barbara Bastion. The property was converted from a series of historic Valletta townhouses into a boutique hotel of around 26 rooms, with the vivid cobalt of its traditional gallarija enclosed balconies and louvered shutters set against the pale ashlar in a contrast that is entirely native to the city's domestic vernacular. The interiors move in a different register — warm bleached oak framing, tufted leather headboards, and panoramic sepia-toned wall murals mapping Valletta's own skyline in a reflection that doubles the image like a watercolour wash. Freestanding soaking tubs are positioned to catch the light from those blue-shuttered windows, while the lower-level spa makes no attempt to conceal what it is built into: a vaulted Knights-era undercroft in raw cut limestone, its pointed arches lit from floor level to reveal the grain of the stone above a plunge pool. The rooftop dining terrace, furnished with rattan-framed chairs in sage and sand, surveys the Grand Harbour toward Birgu across a balustrade of turned limestone columns — the view that has defined Valletta since Laparelli laid out its grid in 1566.

Iniala Harbour House Reviews

"To stay at Inialia was truly a privilege. The service was exceptional with all staff true ambassadors of the hotel's values. The hotel offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour and the 3 Cities. To sit on a balcony and watch passing cruise liners and super yachts is a truly memorable experience. Why go to Upper Barraka Gardens to watch the canon fire when you can watch it from your balcony. Its a short ten minute walk to the Gozo fast ferry and gondalo trip to the 3 cities. Ten minutes later you can have dinner at a marina whilst admiring the superyachts at sunset. Breakfast was delicious with a good selection. The staff again incredible especially Nicky who anticipated our every wish. Undoubtedly the best view in Valletta for breakfast. The art in Iniala has the feeling of an art gallery each piece carefully selected for a specific place or corner. It has to been seen to be fully appreciated. An outstanding eclectic collection that just works perfectly, blending effortlessly to the structure and style of the building. The hotel is quiet in the evening yet only a 10 minute walk to the bustle of Valletta. In short, Iniala you healed our souls and for this we thank you profusely. We will return no question."

"Outstanding service from the Concierge, front of house and restaurant staff. All the little touches (champagne on arrival, in-room chocolates and personalised messages) made this holiday extra special. The rooms are as stunning as the views and the hotel oozes quality from top to bottom. But it is the wonderful staff that really makes your stay memorable. We are so glad to have saved up enough money to have been able to stay at this fine hotel. We would come back to the Iniala in a heartbeat. Thoroughly recommended."
